Friggin' Moles
« on: December 21, 2011, 10:45:49 AM »
The damned mole(s) is/are tearing the hell out one section of our yard. I've tried the guillotine, smoke bombs, and driving over the tunnels with the tractor. WHAM, BAM - they're back within a few hours.

I just pumped 30 .22LRs into the tunnels that looked like they were the traveling tunnels and not the feeding tunnels. Probably won't work, either.

And my damned rifle jammed, which took another 15 minutes to unjam. Lotsa fun in the cold and drizzle today.................  :whatever:

I've got the little bastards too. My back yard not only has the little molehills (no tunnels, because of the high water levels right now), but the holes are humungous. And there's a ton of 'em.

To add insult to injury, the dogs dig for 'em. F'n digging dogs -- I hate that shit.  :censored:   :banghead:

I think I mentioned previously that I got one of the bastards a few years ago with the .22, and then my wife asked if I buried it!

Tent the ground, nuke with Phostoxin or Methyl Bromide. Works like a champ. Trust me, I know:-)

Several places carry a small metal windwill that has a bb in the arm. The vibration annoys the moles and they move on. I got ours at Harbor Freight and Tool.

Yeah, I found it here:

There's a store in my area. Will stop in and give this a go. Price is right.

Wineslob, I don't want to use chemicals. I've got dogs in the back yard and they eat everything that isn't nailed down, including voles and whatever critter they can catch.  :whatever:

Might be the same thing here, but I don't want to test our chocolate lab. I don't trust him.

Cats are out of the question; my wife and one of the grandkids are highly allergic to cats.

And now I have to buy another .22.  :o  My 57-year old rifle is trashed. They just don't make things like they used to.  :rotf: It'd cost more to fix it than to buy a replacement.

CG, are you actually hunting these moles? Wait till you see some movement underground, then blast away with the .22?

No way do I have the kind of time to do something like that.

If that ain't it, what are you doing with the .22?

I have a guy I've used in the past. He's got the spike-type of trap and he comes out and sets 'em up. More often than not, the trap snags the little bastard. (Gotta dig him up with a screwdriver. Ugly little varmints.) But at $20 a pop, there might be a cheaper option. This windmill thing sounds like it might work. Chemicals ain't a good idea either, because of the dogs.

We have a mole plague, too. This year seems particularly bad. Can't use poisons 'cause of the pups, so might try the Mole Chaser Windmill.

You can get it through Amazon, too....

A lot of negative comments about the bearings in the windmill - they don't seem to last long.

Yep, that's what I do with the .22. I just fold down the tailgate on the truck, get a lawn chair and a beverage or two, and the rifle, and wait until there's some movement. I've nailed 4 of them that way. I don't dig 'em up; they're already buried and I just leave 'em for Mother Nature to do its thing.

I have a guillotine trap and a spike trap; neither works for me. The lead poisoning seems to be the only way to control 'em. I talked to guy yesterday who's in the varmint control business. He's given up trying to control the little shits, since they have multiple partners just waiting to take their places.

We've never had a mole problem, but did have a family of gophers living under our shed.  They never caused a problem except for teasing the dog.

I remember catching a mole when I was a kid , their fur is soft, but their front paws are strong little suckers.

I can share! I'll box up a couple of 'em and ship 'em off to ya!  :lmao:

Here's what I'm picking up this afternoon.

I'll get an extra 10-round magazine, too, for my pocket. There's a 25 round magazine for it, too, but I'd probably never use it, and it would be clunky storing it.

Probably. Barney, our basset who's passed away, would get 'em, too.

I printed the assembly/use instructions PDF, and it looks pretty simple so I'll order one and see if I can do something about the bearing problem.

I was thinking that the people who assembled their windmill and blew right past lubricating the bearings are probably the people who are bitching the loudest. The light grease they call for is not provided with the kit.

There are some very effective, but nasty, mole/gopher traps.  All depends on what you have the stomach for.  Getting those nasty rodents off the trap is kind of nasty.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/NTESearch?storeId=6970&N=0&Ntk=All&Ntt=victor+mole+trap&Nty=1&D=victor+mole+trap&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&cmnosearch=PPC&cm_ven=google_PPC&cm_cat=GroundsMaintain&cm_pla=generic&cm_ite=victor mole trap&mkwid=sa3gL2cp7&pcrid=11757838031&mt=b

I tolerated a lot more when the ability to support my children by successfully haying hundreds of acres depended on it.  Now, I couldn't care less about some grass.

That's the one that looks very much like the one that the local guy has used - to somewhat good effect. IIRC, that trap (and similar traps set at the same time) got about 4 of the damned moles. I can't keep paying that guy $20 a pop, though.

I used the "out of sight" model.  It worked okay on gophers, too.
