Chandler files defamation suit against defeated rival, HigginsWORCESTER — Hours after winning re-election to a sixth term in office, state Sen. Harriette L. Chandler filed a defamation lawsuit today against her 78-year-old Republican challenger, William J. Higgins Sr. of Northboro. The suit, which was filed this morning in Worcester Superior Court, accuses Mr. Higgins of spreading “false and malicious allegations†about Mrs. Chandler's “morality, integrity and honesty†during the course of the campaign.The lawsuit, filed on her behalf by lawyers Roy A. Bourgeois and Burton Chandler, Mrs. Chandler's husband, seeks unspecified damages under claims for libel, slander and violation of a state law prohibiting the publishing of false statements against political candidates.Mrs. Chandler said in the suit that her reputation was damaged by false claims contained in political campaign letters, fliers, newspaper advertisements and announcements paid for by Mr. Higgins and that Mr. Higgins knew or should have known the allegations were untrue.In addition to suffering harm to her reputation and good name, Mrs. Chandler, a 72-year-old Worcester Democrat, was forced to incur the cost of her own political advertisements to defend herself, the suit states.
