12 things about me that most people don't know:

1) After 2 years of not smoking cigarettes, I picked them up again.

2) "I ain't as good as I once was ... " applies on so many levels these days.

3) If I got shit faced and laid one good time I'd probably feel better.

4) I emptied my 38 into the letterman jacket of my last boyfriend.  Thankfully, he wasn't wearing it at the time.

5) City girl refugee gone country (last 18 years at least).

6) I love broccoli, okra, squash, zucchini and chicken livers.

7) I love my BIL like a brother.  Who else can I talk to about the finer points of bodily functions?

8) I'm sarcastic and opinionated and those are my good qualities.

9) I love poker, especially Texas Hold'em.

10)  My house plants are dying of neglect, even the cacti.

11) I have a crazy sense of humor and love to laugh.

12) 1 beer and I'm talkative; 2 beers and some music, I'm dancing; 3 beers and I'm on the internetz baring my soul.

12 Things Most People Would Never Suspect:

1.  When work stresses me out, I walk out of my office and go work as a nursing assistant, so I can remember why I am in the work that I am and to remember that the paperwork and executive office is bullshit, its the people that matter.

2.  I grew up on an isolated dirt farm without indoor plumbing, electricity and our heat (in MN) was from a metal barrel with four pig iron legs welded to it, laid on its side and filled with firewood we cut and split ourselves.

3.  My nickname as a child was Poochie.

4.  My other nicknames include:  Junebug, Junester, Bug, Angel, Baby and my personal favorite:  Scarlett (from an old song "like Scarlett O'Hara she loved none but wanted them all)

5.  I can hitch and drive a span of mules.

6.  I can and have driven:  18 wheelers, bulldozers, backhoes, tractors of all shapes and sized, combines, swathers, dump trucks, road graders, motorcycles and swathers to name just a few.

7.  In my wilder days, I would get sick every time I smoked pot. In fact I threw up all over my amorous date once.

8.  I have held the hand and comforted many dying people in my line of work.

9.  I believe in ghosts.

10.  I was married to Freeper and never even thought of straying!

11. I cry at sentimental things.

12.  I introduce my best friend as my brother and he is actually an old boyfriend I met twenty plus years ago and dated for ten years!

Ok, I'll play.

1) I am addicted to Guitar Hero.
2) I have a mad crush on Brian Kilmeade from Fox and Friends.
3) I secretly hope to run into former 'frenemies' so that they can see how awesome my life is.
4) I can watch movies that would make normal people cry and not shed a tear; but a dead mommy storyline on a teen soap will turn me to mush in a nanosecond.
5) I can use a gazetteer.
6) Some days, I like my in-laws better than my husband. (Not often, but occasionally.)
7) I am a HUGE NKOTB fan and shelled out a lot of money to see them this coming October.
8) I used to be able to recite the dialogue from the Star Wars Trilogy verbatim.
9) I still like to color in coloring books
10) I think work is for chumps.
11) I sucked my thumb until I was 10.
12) I (used to) write fanfiction for the X-Files.

This is what people in real life, but not on the internet, know about franksolich:

(01) franksolich has a teapot once owned and used by George Bernard Shaw.
(02) franksolich has no right elbow, it having been destroyed January 20, 1993.
(03) franksolich was given a key to the City of Indianapolis.
(04) franksolich met, in person, Pope Paul VI, in Rome, first-hand and up close.
(05) franksolich actually has an heir (besides the six nephews), although not related by blood or affinity, only practicality.
(06) franksolich had tea with H.R.H. the Duchess of Gloucester.
(07) franksolich once got a cable from H.R.H. the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
(08) franksolich has always paid his own way, no loans, no grants, no nothing.
(09) franksolich still uses a typewriter, an IBM Selectric II.
(10) franksolich has been to Boston more times than to any other major American city.
(11) franksolich used to have a collection of more than 100 clocks, all more than 75 years old.
(12) franksolich had cholera while running around the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants with free medical care for all, and having survived that with only the help of aspirin and minute morphine, considers that the Greatest Accomplishment of his life.
(13) franksolich uses a guest-book, for visitors to sign, as a surreptitious-but-elegant means of getting people's names because he can't hear them tell him their names.

That is all.

I'll try, but not sure if I can come up with 12!

1. I've lived in 7 states, and it wasn't due to military moves.

2. My childhood dream was to work at a zoo with a job like Joan Embry's.

3.  I've never been to California, and plan on never going there.

4.  My honeymoon was at Disney World.

5.  My dad was a test pilot at Edwards AFB and then an astronaut.

6.  My mom was a first generation immigrant from Germany.

7.  On my dad's side, I can trace my American roots back to the colonies.

8.  I don't have a passport.

9.  If, while eating a meal, I take a bit of something that is "off" texturally, I'm done eating.  I can't eat any more.

10.  I think snakes are cool.

11.  Spiders, on the other hand, not so much!  :-)

12.  My husband is also my best friend.

Do you keep a diary or journal, Frank?   I swear, I'd love to read  your life story.

Don't make too much of these; many of these were by chance random things, such as my being in the wrong place at the right time (usually because I didn't hear the place I was supposed to be).  And it's not like I got intimate with any famous people; it was generally pleasantries, nothing of significance.

I'm sure, for example, that thousands and thousands of people met Pope Paul VI (he was very old and frail when I came along, though) up close or H.R.H. the Duchess of Gloucester.

There was one accidental personality who did spend a great deal of time with me, when I was a teenager, and going to spend my first winter in England.  A friend, a music aficiando, had given me six LPs, recordings of Beethoven, conductor Sir Adrian Boult, which he wished to have autographed, if I could, by the conductor.

I had supposed it would be a ten-minute courtesy call at his home (I didn't just show up at the door; there was correspondence beforehand), but I ended up spending the entire afternoon there.  The home of he and his wife seemed rather small and cramped (although comfortable, in a dowdy sort of way), but because it was winter, perhaps it just seemed that way.

Sir Adrian Boult, very old and frail at the time (this was in 1978), was intrigued that a deaf person would be interested in music (I wasn't, really, but I made it seem that way), and insisted upon demonstrating to me how he scored sheets (I think that's the proper term, but am not sure); there were more sheets of paper around his place than in Alphonse Capote Gore's office.  He even took specially-lined paper and wrote "music" for me.

He also played the piano for me, myself standing at the other end, palms firmly down on the case, so as to "absorb" the music.  And other musical instruments, most noticeably a violin, in which case I had at least my finger-tips on the most "musically-sensitive" part of the instrument, so as to "absorb" the music.

He did this all afternoon, and his wife served tea.

It was wonderful; Sir Adrian Boult was a true gentleman, top-notch, first class all the way.

As for your question, madam, yes, I've kept my written observations; my stay in the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants, for example, is demonstrated by 27 three-ring notebooks full of notes (no photographs, though; I'm not a camera person).  I don't look at such things; they've been stored away for years and years, out of sight, because they make me very sad, very melancholy.

Which is best explained by (14) of "Twelve things people in real life know about one, but people on the internet don't":

(14) franksolich has never wanted anything so badly, so desperately, than to be a middle-class white-collar with wife and children and dog and split-level house and station wagon--franksolich has wanted such things so badly he could taste them, and never in the history of the world was so much labor expended for so little result.

Oh Frank, sometimes I wonder what God was thinking when He gave me a child with...what seems like some days... extraordinary special needs. How did He think I could handle this? But then I fall back on this meditation by an anonymous soldier (I believe Civil War) and I find comfort in these words.

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health, that I might do great things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing I asked for-but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken words were answered.

I am, among men, most richly blessed.

1.  My nick names when I was a child were Gracie by my aunt and Grody by my mom and step dad.  Apparently there was a time when I would wear my favorite pair of pea green underwear for days on end and refuse to shower.

2.  I once peed my pants when I was in 3nd grade at the skating rink.  I was playing pinball and was winning big time so I tried to hold it so I could continue to play.  I continued to skate by the way.   :hyper:

3.  I had a dog when I was a child that I named Tiger.  I so wanted to be one of the kids from the Brady Bunch that I named my dog after their dog.  One day I went to a friends house and when I came home he was gone.  My parents said he ran away but I later learned that they gave him away because he was PITA.

4.  I got strep and mono a month before my wedding (still had a fever during my wedding).  We went to Crested Butte for our honeymoon but we only stayed for two days because I was still sick and I didn't even get to ski once.

5.  I sometimes cook a bag of frozen peas and eat the whole thing for lunch.

6.  One time I jumped on a guy who was beating up my husband (then boyfriend).  It was in high school and this kid started a fight with him and had him in a choke hold.  I jumped on his back, pulled his hair and even bit him.

7.  I had the crap beat out of me when I was in 7th grade.  I even had to go to the ER.  I had a HUGE black eye, my eye even swelled shut.

8.  I use to play softball (I was the catcher) all during my childhood and I was really good (if I do say so myself).

9.  I love to have my back scratched and ask my husband to scratch it every night.

10.  My first "love" was named Roger.  He was short and obnoxious but he was so cute.

11.  A boy named Mitchell Johnson told me in 3rd grade that if I let him cut some of my hair he would eat it.....so of course I let him.

12.  My house looks orderly and non cluttered but my closets are a mess.

1. I am also left handed! It's really the only lefty thing about me (grin).

2. I was born so premature (about 6 weeks) that I only weighed 3lbs and they didn't allow my mom to even touch me for a month. She cried everyday in front of the nursery window.

3. I broke my left leg (shattered it) when I was 14. I was riding with my dad on his motorcycle when a drunk hit us. Ten years later, my brother was hit by a drunk (who fled the scene) while riding his motorcycle. He crushed his right leg. Our injuries and scars are almost identical. Our mom hates motorcycles now.

4. I used to be a disc jockey in college.

5. I have been in a commercial for a restaurant.

6. I sat on Elvis's lap as a child. He was my uncle's employer.

7. My grandfather is famous and a part of an historical event.

8. I have never eaten a hot dog.

9. I am obsessed with genealogy.

10. John McCain bought me coffee in the airport last summer.

11. I'm a neat freak and super organized.

12. I legally changed my name once.

The name was born from the fact the panties were not pea green when she put them on.   :innocent:

Actually they were, my mom told me they were "Her Majesty" brand (if I remember correctly).

No doubt the proper thing to wear on the throne.

...but of course.

I totally thought no one could tell.  I was wearing an old pair of my brothers tough skin jeans.  They were dark so you couldn't even tell they were wet (or so I thought).  You don't think about the pee smell when you are 8.  :lmao:

Well, I hope the "heir" you have realizes the treasure he has in those 27 3-ring binders!

They're preserved, in those transparent plastic "page protectors" that one puts in three-ring binders.  As is much else, including family letters going back to the 1830s.  They're all in order, for the nephews (three of whom are close to my own age, the other three all at least adults by now).

It was a pain, because Soviet paper is nothing like our 8.5x11 paper, being a little longer and a little narrower than that, and it was a hassle finding page-protectors--and three-ring notebooks--to accomodate that size, but obviously I did.  It took a long time, though.

I'm hoping that a generation removed can read such things with detachment; I can't.  It's all very sad.

The last time I read a letter by my mother, for example, to an older brother, at a time a teenager away from home, it was a description of how, coming home from the hospital, she opened the garage door and voila! there was a horse standing there.

We lived in a town of circa 3000 in the Sandhills of Nebraska, and true, on the edge of the city, right next door to a wheat field, but to find a horse inside one's garage was not a usual experience.

A person detached from the individuals could read such a thing and gently laugh at the humor of it, but for me, I felt as if an old man sitting in a rocking-chair staring out into the skies, dreaming of things that once were, but will no longer be.

The heir gets the life-insurance; the nephews get all this family and personal stuff.

The family and personal stuff would be worth more than any money if I were an heir. I too treasure the family things more than the monetary ones. The only thing I wanted when my grandfather died was his pipe. To everyone else in the family, they just saw it as some old stinky thing to be given to goodwill. I saw a lot more. As a result, I got it.

I don't look forward to closing my father's estate when that day comes. He inherited my grandmother's house and all of it's contents. Five generations have occupied that house. I'm a sentimental fool when it comes these things and I know it will need to be handled. I'm just glad I have a level-headed brother to help.

You were supposed to name things about yourself in real life, that aren't generally known in cyberlife.

2, 3, 4, 5, and 11 we already knew in cyberlife, and so you'll have to come up with five new ones.

Well, yeah, there's probably a lot of drudgery in it too, hauling all those bags around.

But undoubtedly one meets some pretty interesting people.

And one thing I've always been curious about--this however might be unique to the Sandhills of Nebraska, though--is that convenience stores sell more ice in winter, than in summer.  At least around here.

One wonders why this is.

As for everything else, well, it seems to me your twelve things are enduring accomplishments, while many of my own are random few minutes of glittering lights; things that happen in a flash, and evaporate in a flash, and of course they aren't, strictly speaking, "accomplishments," but more rather things that happened independent of my own actions.

Apparently I have "grown out of it", or so I was told.  I use to see and write words completely backwards, like a mirror image.  I could not read by the time I was in 3rd grade.  Apparently I didn't always see backwards which made it impossible to learn how to read.  When I type now I find that I will insert words that are totally different than the words I am meaning to type.  I'm not even thinking of the word and when I reread what I type I find it.  It's so weird.

(14) My paternal uncle, the younger brother of my father, was a grocer in northwestern Pennsylvania until 1961, when he and the family moved down to Arizona.  I believe they actually lived in Texas for a bit too.

They moved down there specifically because there was this company, this Southland Corporation, that had this really neat idea about "convenience stores," and he ended up being one of their vice-presidents.

This was in the 1960s and early 1970s; a long time ago, and as I was young, I was never told the details, or if the details were told me, I didn't pay much attention.

I lived in a beach resort area at the time, so I can't speak to the winter months. Lots of strange people, though. I Worked with a former green beret sniper. Told me some crazy stories. To this day, whenever I see tube-shaped ice, I know it came from a Vogt-brand ice machine.  :-)

I do that too ! Its the oddest thing - It part of why my replies take so long - I write, wait, then reread. If I'm typing via 'stream of consciousness' I find transposed letters, phonetic spelling, and seemingly random substitute words. The oddest thing though Is It has never stopped me from reading - I was literate by about age three. When my parents applied to place me in preschool, the teachers thought I may have been mentally handicapped, between the drooling and vacant stares - I suspect they were counting on autistic -. They gave me an aptitude test that they then couldn't grade, because I aced it. I tested with something like 5th grade level abilities at 4.

And thats where I still am at today ;)

The company began as a brainstorm of John Jefferson Green. In 1927 Green approached Joe C. 'Jodie' Thompson, one of five founding directors of the Dallas Southland Ice Company, with a new idea. He wanted to sell milk, eggs, and bread through his retail ice dock. 'You furnish the items,' he suggested, 'and I'll pay the power bills.' Thompson agreed, and together they established the first known convenience store.

The newly formed Southland Ice Company was composed of four separate ice companies and operated eight ice plants and 21 retail ice stations. An early attempt at advertising occurred after one Southland manager visited Alaska in 1928. Upon his return to Texas, he planted a souvenir totem pole in front of his store. The pole attracted so much attention that the employees suggested placing one at every Southland-owned retail ice dock and naming the stores 'Tote'm Stores,' since the consumers toted away their purchases.

Southland decided to go with the new name; it unified the company's diversified stores and provided a distinct identity, a key ingredient in the successful operation of numerous retail outlets. Joseph Thompson, secretary-treasurer of Southland Ice, unified the stores further by training staff with daily sales talks. He also chose a company uniform for ice station service men. Thompson recognized early on that consumers should receive the same quality and service at every store. During this time Southland also began to experiment with constructing and leasing gasoline stations at ten of its Dallas-area stores.

The Great Depression plunged Southland into bankruptcy in 1931. During a period of receivership and reorganization, Joseph Thompson was named president, a move that ensured.....

Did you do well in math?  I excelled in math and was told that a majority of dyslexic people do.

Geometry and related.. Algebra and related though makes no sense to me at all. I also have the ability to deconstruct objects in my head, and can estimate things like size, distance and time without actively thinking about it -and am usually close to accurate every time. Its a stupid human trick I suppose..

I was born in 1954 in Dallas and there were already 7-Elevens on every third corner.  Those stores started to boom right after WWII.

My favorite 7-Eleven Store when I was growing up was in Wynnewood Village (shopping center).  It was built and opened in 1949.  I managed that store for a short time in 1972.

Much better, Rob.

I've always wanted to write about the salvage business, even though I know nothing about it.

UNLIKE common perception, I suspect there's a lot of good stuff to tell about that sort of business, like the ice business.

Really.

Much that is extraordinary in life dwells in mundane (or what one thinks mundane) things.

This was a used auto parts place...when my grandfather's rheumatoid arthritis got really bad (he could not even drink coffee from a cup, had not grip, but he could hold a bowl, so that was his coffee cup) my grandmother would fire up the torch herself and cut pistons out of engine blocks so we could "take them to town" for scrap.

13) My brother in law and his five partners just lost 2.5M on a resturant in The Villages, FL. On top of having to pay $1000 a month for the next six years......he was always one of those "big spender types" he is now a changed man....he actually treats my sister right...so this loss was actually a blessing...of course, they did not ask for any "mortgage bail out" or scream "the economy"....they simply admit they took a risk and lost.

Well, it's possible they were already thriving in one area of the country, before they took off; that's not uncommon.

My uncle was responsible for setting up, or if not setting up, some sort of major major expansion, of 7-11s in Denver, and that would have been the late 1960s, say about 1967-1968.

Convenience stores don't appear to have happened in Nebraska until construction of Interstate 80, the most vital highway in America, through the state in the late 1960s.

Chains, I mean; of course since the earliest times, in Nebraska there was always a small store tucked away somewhere in every town that stayed open later than other stores, and that was open on Sundays too.  But those weren't chains.

No, doesn't work on a taco either.  I always look to see, if on a sub or taco that one end is more full with fillings and which end is just bread or shell.  I always start at the crappy end, again so your last bite is full of filling and such.

I do it with candy too.  I decide what are good colors vs bad colors.  I eat the bad ones first, so I have the good ones at the end.

I hear you jty! I cannot stand to hear someone scratch fabric at all. My husband will scratch all of his fingernails on his jeans. Like when his leg itches and he makes a big deal out of it because he claims that the denim smoothes out his nails. OY!!! It makes me shiver and want to throw up. That's so weird I know!

I also can't stand for my food to touch. I used to only eat food on a plate with dividers. I also don't drink anything when I eat unless it's wine or beer and meant to consumed with food. After I eat, I will drink a glass of water.

LMAO! I use those too!  :lmao: I try to manage by using a fork and using plastic or something to lop the meat in the pan or something, but if I have to touch it--let's say mix a meatloaf or something: the gloves are going on. There is NO way.

Oh let her roll her eyes. Touching raw meat is...*shudder*

OH MY GOD! You ARE my twin!

I wear disposable gloves when I have to handle raw meat. (If it's for an extended period of time and I can't just use a fork).

I also clean the kitchen like it's a surgical suite when I'm done cooking.

I also like to wear the gloves. Alot of bacteria can get under your nails, etc....when I am done everything gets washed right away and I use sanitizer (at home) and this includes cleaning the facet fixtures and handles....I always try to avoid any means of cross contamination.

OMG, I think we are twins :rotf:

the scratching thing also makes me want to get sick. I have the same aversion or trigger for some reason with that...go figure.

Another of mine...I loathe touching raw meat. I just don't feel I can ever get my hands clean enough. Almost in the way a bug landing on you(you know, 'gross' bugs) gives you the heebie jeebies for a while.  :rotf:

I think raw (red meat) looks better before it's cooked.

A certain amount of background bacteria is both normal and healthy.  As you know, more and more doctors are saying that bacteria is becoming resistant as a result of over-cleaning. You also depress your own immunity by being over-clean.

Soap-and-water clean has been just fine for years.  You don't need gloves -- just wash with soap and water between handling and preparation.  You are actually doing the opposite of what you want to accomplish.

Amen!  We are cleaning ourselves to death.

I am a very clean cook.  In fact, by the time dinner is ready you cannot even tell the kitchen had be used.  I keep a clean kitchen because it is prudent and necessary....but gloves?  Overboard!

People need to get back to realizing that beginning on the day we are born our bodies start to work building immunities to the evil germs with which we share this planet.  This is why older folks rarely catch a common cold.

I blame television and liberals.  I usually do.

I don't use chemicals when possible. I clean the way my grandmother cleaned before people starting buying purell by the gallon. I don't use any anti-bacterial products. Not even in hand soap or body wash. I always go with the mildest and simplest thing you can find. Sorry, not giving up my cleaning routine :-) When you have a kid, it's different. Not that he's a hothouse flower prone to wilting, but it's much simplier to clean my kitchen (and bathrooms) completely so that I never have to worry about him making a sandwich on a dirty counter or something along those lines.

My son has only had antibotics four times in his entire life. I can't remember the last time I got sick (beyong the sniffles that went away with chicken soup and tylenol).

1) I used to be left of Stalin until I dropped out of college and had to pay my own way.

2) In my misspent youth I tried everything but crack and heroin at least once. (Experimentally; I was never a "druggie" and

4) I was in an Improvisational Comedy troop in my distant youth and we performed for congressman Les Aspin at a party at his home.

Okay, explain #10 :-)

Summer of her sophmore year of college she moved in with us. (My family had a big ole' rambling house and she and I were living there with my Mom)  My uncles bar with his apartment above it burned to the ground and he moved in with us.  Five months later he moved down to Florida and she went with him.

Oddly enough we are on good terms.  I committed one of the only real evil acts of my life when that happened.  I bided my time until I got a phone number for the two of them. I called down and when I got her on the phone I told her that I understood completely and that I just wanted her to be happy and that I was proud of her for making such a hard choice when I knew that she had problems committing to things. :-)
He got the worse end of the deal, lol.

I married the lady I did and he has to put up with her, lol.

There is a little truth to your post....some will wear gloves and never change them...which contaminates other things.....

Gloves are pretty important when handling poultry or pork. Cross contamination can kill someone and has many times.

During the cold and flu season, you can never wash your hands often enough!

She's not his aunt (biologically but you knew that). She is the woman who married his uncle. And apparently after he had a relationship with her. We're not talking about "Aunt Mabel who has been married to Uncle Bob my whole life" Big difference!

Oh he was only 20 years older than both of us, lol.

She was a confused chick and we had already gone through a breakup and reconciliation.  By odd happenstance the girl I dated on the rebound is now married to one of my best friends. I introduced them after we broke up because I wanted her to meet a guy who would treat her right.

I called down to talk to my uncle about something a year ago and wound up talking to her on the phone for 10 minutes.

It was about as stimulating as conversing with the retarded guy who gathers carts at the local Piggly Wiggly. Seriously.

I should have added a 13th.

13) I am at least on cordial speaking terms with every women I have ever dated or been with.
