Rheumatoid arthritis help. I know diet is important with this. Anyone have another ideas to help with it?

TVDOC:
It's an autoimmune disease (totally different from osteoarthritis).......assuming you have it, I needn't explain further.  Although difficult to treat depending of type and severity, there are some excellent new drugs available that seem to work quite well.  They tend to be pricey however, if that's a consideration.

Just a few ideas:

Dietary Changes to Eliminate Gout and Arthritis Symptoms

One of the main causes of gout is the digestion of proteins, which break down into purines and further into uric acid. Uric acid builds up in the form of needle-like crystals depositing in the small joints creating excruciating joint pain. Reducing high-protein foods from the diet helps eliminate gout and arthritis symptoms. The Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide recommends avoiding the following foods and replacing them with whole foods lower in protein such as fish, black beans and fermented soy products.

    * Meat and poultry
    * Animal products
    * Shellfish
    * Beer and hard alcohol
    * Spinach
    * Asparagus
Medicinal Foods Promote Healing for Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms and Gout

Certain foods and drinks reduce inflammation; swelling and joint pain and may lessen rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, gout attacks and other arthritic conditions. Including these foods in the diet provides an individual with more control over his or her pain levels and frequency of attacks.

    * Tart Cherry Juice: High in antioxidants and anthocyanins, tart cherry juice is magical for some people, helping to reduce attacks and lessen pain within 24 hours. Drink 4 to 6 oz. juice mixed with water in an 8 oz. glass, twice daily.

    * Baking Soda: Combine 1/2 tsp. baking soda with 6 to 8 oz. water and drink several times daily. Take no more than a total of 3 tsp. daily of baking soda. Since baking soda can raise the blood pressure, consult with a health practitioner before using for joint pain relief.

   * Lemon Juice and Baking Soda: Pour 2 tbsp. lemon juice into a glass and slowly add 1/4 tsp. baking soda. It will fizz and foam. Mix with a spoon and add an additional 1/4 tsp. baking soda, stirring it continually until the fizzing stops. Add 6 to 8 oz. water and drink to neutralize acidity in the body, reducing rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, acid reflux and gout pain. The total amount of baking soda necessary is 1/2 tsp. Apple cider vinegar can be used in place of the lemon juice in the same quantities.

Herbal Supplements to Eliminate Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Take powdered turmeric and bromelain capsules together for relief from joint pain. Both are potent anti-inflammatory agents, according to the University of Oregon. Studies indicate that when taken together, these supplements can be a viable replacement for prednisone for reducing inflammation. Recommended doses are 250 to 500 mg turmeric, three times daily; and 500 mg bromelain, three times daily for joint pain relief.

Shallaki (Boswella Serrata): This herb, also known as Boswella, is a herb found in India and has been used by Ayurvedic physicians over the years for treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis. Extract of Boswella reduced pain, swelling and morning stiffness when administered to those suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis. Due to the high anti-inflammatory property of this herb, it inhibits substances causing inflammation, speeds up formation of cartilage, and increases blood supply. This is available in the form of capsules, and could be taken after consultation with an Ayurvedic physician.

Ashwagandha (Withania Somniferum): Ashwagandha root is a holistic medicine of Indian origin, belonging to the potato family, which has been used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis. Apart from treating Arthritis, it is also used in treating high blood pressure, diabetes and other immune dysfunctions. Because of its high anti-inflammatory property, it is also called “India ginseng”. It rejuvenates and nourishes body tissues and helps in physical fitness. This is available in the form of capsules and could be taken on consultation with a physician.

Ginger (Zingiber Officinale): Ginger root, is also one of the safest and simplest herb used in treating Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteo Arthritis. It inhibits the inflammation producing enzymes and provides relief from skeletal and muscular pains. It is found to have no side effects even if consumed for years.

Hoping this may help you.

Does that work for osteoarthritis as well, or is that something different?

Cavegal,

I do a lot of keying at my job, and my joints take a beating, even at my age.  I use emu oil.

I am told lots of seniors use emu oil to alleviate joint pain.  Obviously, my pain is from other things, and not arthritis; but, I have been using it for about three months, and have absolutely no pain in my hand joints anymore, whatsoever.  It's $12 for a little bottle of it, but it goes a long way.  I'll be buying another bottle when this one runs out.

I have no medical training or anything, so hopefully someone can correct me if this isn't good advice.  I know it works for me, though.
