Six Flags Amusement Park Company Declares Bankruptcy

NEW YORK —  The amusement park company Six Flags is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying it needs to reorganize and shed $1.8 billion of debt.

Mark Shapiro, the New York-based company's chief executive officer, says the move won't affect the operation of its 20 theme parks in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Six Flags says it actually had a great year in 2008. It saw 25 million visitors and posted record revenues. But executives are trying to lighten a $2.4 billion debt load that they say is unsustainable. ...

When was it decided the debt load was unsustainable?  Before or after the debt was incurred?  Debt is not an air born virus.  It's like AIDS.  Debt is avoidable and its causes are known.

25 million visitors last year and $2.4 billion in debt.... so if each customer spent an extra $100, they could pay off their debt? just raise prices by $100 a person... the liberal solution

There's a Six Flags-owned park maybe 40 miles from me.  The Great Escape.  I remember going there when I was a senior in high school . . . it was fun.  I can't see Great Escape going under, though.  The original owners of the park would never let that happen.

Six Flags Over Texas, the King of Six Flags parks, will celebrate its 50th year next summer.  That fact amazes me.  I was 6 years old when it opened. 

I was a weird kid and even weirder teenage boy.  I did not (do not) like rides.  A ticket to Six Flags was wasted on me. 

I took a girl to Six Flags Over Texas way back when.  It was our first and last date.  I rode the Log Ride!  That should have counted for something.

I actually like thrill rides.  Don't know why, as they probably set my life expectancy back half a year each or something, but I like them.

A clear majority of folks love rides.  I think that's great.  If rides are fun for you or anyone, go for it.  I...just found them...pointless for me and me alone.  I don't enjoy them.  I'm not scared of them.  I didn't even like the kiddy rides as a toddler.  I know what I thought, too.  "What's the point?".  I wasn't impressed by going in a circle.

Seriously, my wife loves them.  My kids love them.  My 5-year-old Little Angel was ready to fight because she wasn't tall enough to "ride this ride".  People, really smart and good people, like rides.  I don't. 

That's just the way it is.  I'm different.  It ain't everybody else. 

Side note:  I was going to go sky diving back in 1996.  I went through the course and was set.  Then my degenerative hip thing got mentioned in passing by my well-meaning friend.  I was grounded immediately.  But I was going to jump.  It wouldn't be going round-n-round.  Looking back, I probably would have been seriously injured or died.

Side note 2:  I went that day with four longtime friends.  Two of them jumped but said they would never do it again.  One was injured.  And the other one went four more times that I know of.  He was a former Marine.

Busch Gardens is WAY too expensive and may be next if they don't cut some slack in their admission.  I took my son's family (5 of us) last summer and the admission alone was almost $450.  Not including parking, food and drink ($5 waters) on a hot, humid day.  We're roller coaster fans, but the twins were an inch too short to ride the BIG ONES.  Bummer for them  :bawl:  Here's my favorite ride:

In comparison, last Monday I took my wife and my Little Angel, her dad, and his lady to Red Robin for lunch.  The check was $70.00.  We were there about 45 minutes and all I got was escapable gas.

Out-of-the-house "fun" is expensive.
