grape jelly
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:37:26 PM »
While at the grocery store the other day, I noticed grape jelly, same brand, two differently-sized jars, the smaller one more expensive than the larger one.

Exactly the same ingredients, with a minor difference.

The larger, cheaper, jar has "corn syrup."

The smaller, more expensive, jar has "high-fructose corn syrup."

Figuring the one with merely corn syrup, and not this high-fructose stuff, was the better bargain, I bought it.  (I don't do jelly a whole lot; this 32-ounce jar is perhaps going to last me six or eight months.)

Was this a good decision, or a bad one?

Beats me, Frank....I buy Welch's, and don't read the label. :clueless:
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

It's worth the bother to check ingredient labels every so often, by random chance or something, if convenient at the time, because food processors change those ingredients every so often.

It's not anything one should worry about a whole lot--checking ingredients--but it's just a good idea to look once in a while.

I do read some labels.

It just depends on what it is. I tend to read them on pre-made frozen or canned stuff to check the sodium content. I also check a label if it's something I have never bought before or a different brand from what I normally buy. Regular brands that I always buy....I'm guilty of not reading the labels.....if I'm at a regular grocery or Walmart/Sam's/

I always check the labels when I buy food at Big Lots or Dollar General/Tree, even if it's a known brand.

When buying "gourmet" foods ....especially ones I have never bought before, I do check the labels. Not for content, but where they are produced.

I don't buy anything made in China. I will buy stuff made in Canada or some European countries.

My sister-in-law always reads every friggen label when she goes to the grocery store.  I hate going with her because a 30 minute trip turns into a two hour trip when you are with her.  She walks up and down every friggen aisle even if she knows she doesn't need anything from that section.

I do read the occasional label though, usually on snack type stuff.  I have found that buying cereal for the kids that the bigger box is almost always the better deal.

Smart.

One shouldn't obsess about reading labels; a random check once or twice every two years should suffice.

And yeah, I dislike grocery shopping with people who must go up and down every aisle, as if on an eastern African safari rather than merely picking up some grub.

The soil scientist used to do that a lot.

I would need a magnifying glass to read most labels. (I really need new glasses)

Unless I am on a mission for just a couple of things in a hurry....I'm one of those up and down every aisle shoppers except the paper products, baby stuff, toiletries, ...I hit all the food aisles except for organic aisles :shucks:

Shopping with my boyfriend is a treat.  He doesn't go up every aisle, but for the things he needs it goes in this order:

Where is it made?
What is the comparison in price per unit?

If it is made in China, start all over again.

If you can't find anything not made in China, stare at it till you can figure out how to make it your own dang self.

Damn, now I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Make mine from crunchy peanut butter and lumpy strawberry jam....on white bread. ...from two seperate jars. ...I hate the peanut butter and jelly already mixed in "one" jar.

Just stick it out the kitchen window and I'll grab it as I'm running by for the hills... :-)

Hey BEG....have you tried Nature's Own WhiteWheat for your kids? It's what I buy as the other half wants wheat and I want white. It's soft like white bread but supposedly is healthy like the wheat.
