I usually hold my breath.  It takes a few tries, but it seems to work for me.

If not allergic, a teaspoon of peanut butter works for me and worked for my daughter.

Holy cow, that only lasted about three hours. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I tried everything except for peanut butter. It's packed away somewhere and we couldn't find it. (Moving any time now) I tried holding my breath, which does usually work. Tried drinking water in various ways. Tried stretching my diaphragm. Tried compressing it. Tried the spoonful of sugar.Tried honey. Tried lemon juice. Tried eating a hunk of bread slowly. Some of this stuff I hadn't heard before, but saw on-line. Nothing worked until it, hopefully, ran its course for the night.

I drink water and hold my nose shut at the same time.  Stop drinking when you need to breath.

It works with beer too.   :-)
