Title: For women only....men don't say I didn't warn you.
Post by: BEG on January 11, 2010, 02:40:16 PM
SO my skin has been looking like crap lately.  Really dry, especially under the eyes.  I would even say crepey looking and dull (and yes even some wrinkles  :o ).  I have been quite depressed about it lately.  So I decided to look around the internet for ideas on how to improve it.  I decided I needed to do a peel.  Was going to go to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and get one but then read thread after thread about how you can do it at home.  Bought myself a 35% Glycolic peel  (if anyone wants a link to the company I bought it from just ask) and have done it twice (with Oil of Olay microdermabrasion in between).  The cost of having an esthetician or doctor do a peel is around $100 - $200 (for the lighter peels not the type you have to have anesthesia to have) vs $18 for a bottle of the glycolic acid.  You do it once a week (every 5 to 7 days) for 6 to 8 weeks then stop for about two weeks (maybe longer if you want) then start up the cycle again.

The bottle will last for several months.  Yes it stings at first, you build up your tolerance for it.  Starting at a couple of minutes (even less for more sensitive skin) and move up every time until you reach the maximum time limit.  I can already tell a difference and I could tell after the first peel.  You don't peel in sheets like you do the stronger peel.  I didn't even notice any peeling the first time I did it.  The 2nd time it was light flaking that other people can't even see was gone by the 2nd day.  It is suppose to stimulate collagen which is always a good thing for skin as well as reduce acne and lighten sun spots and even your skin tone (and help with small wrinkles...it wont get rid of deep wrinkles).  My face feels so soft and I can already tell that I'm going to be hooked on these Glycolic peels.  There are higher and lower percentages.  Also different PH levels, which once you research it you will find is important.

There are other beauty tips that I have tried that have really worked and others that I am going to try if anyone is interested. One in particular that I am currently using that have made my eyelashes at least double, thicken and darken.  I ordered it from India and is cheap.  :p  There is one that I'm sure the men (and some of the women) will think is crazy as it sounds like torture but the more I read about it the more I want to do it.  I may only give this one out if someone PM's me because I don't want any crap about it.   :-)

I use a glycolic based cleanser and moisturizer (an Australian brand). It has been the best thing I have ever used on my skin, I've had great results.

Cool!!!

I was just looking at a new spa's "menu" last night at the peels and microdermabrasion.

I have had the micro done several times, and really like it, but the last time I did it, I wasn't as pleased. The doctor that I had gone to for the others split off and opened a new office and I went to the new office. While the aesthetician was good, I really liked the other one....but she is nowhere to be found.  :(

I had cystic acne when I was in my mid-30's and was on Accutane for 6 months. Did wonderful things for my skin for several years. But it has kind of come back in the last few, and the microdermabrasion helps, as the dermatologist will not give me Accutane at my age.  :(

However, regular micro treatments are not affordable, ...so I have been looking at what else is available. Where I get my haircut is an Aveda salon, and while their facials/peels/etc are reasonable, their products are plant based and the kiss of death for my skin. They cringed when I told them I wash my face with Dove, though the dermatologist just said whatever works, to keep from breaking out, to use it.

I don't wear any foundation, just moisturizing sun screen for sensitive skin(that has glycolic in it) and loose powder. I haven't used foundation for 20 years...it's hard to get used to at first, and for the skin tone to even...but quitting using it was the best thing I did for my skin. My skin tone is pretty even and I'm not terrible on the wrinkles....one advantage to still having breakouts.. ::)

Did you order the stuff, BEG, or go to a store and buy it?

Here is the link Deb:  http://www.skinlaboratory.com/shop/products/Glycolic-Acid-35%25.html

Read the reviews to get ideas and tips. It was SO worth it.  Next time I need to buy it I'm getting the 50%.  Also I was using AmLactin (which has 12% alpha-hydroxy acid) on my face every once in awhile before I bought the Glycolic acid.  I bought it for my dry skin on my legs and it works WONDERS .  I think it got my face ready for the peel.

Just read it and it sounds like the salicylic acid would work well....I already use the Neutrogena moisturizer.  :-)

If you read the reviews on the Glycolic acid a lot of people who have problems with acne use both the glycolic acid and the other type of acid (spaced out) to get the best result.

While to me, my skin is horrible....most people don't know I have it to look at me.

I can break out just from reading the newspaper.  ::) Mine is more the result of touching something... and then touching my face....and I welt up. The welts itch, I scratch...then I get a cyst. Then I get mad at myself.  :banghead:

Another item I found recently (before I moved to CA) was moroccan oil.  It works miracles on hair.  Seriously...it is the best thing ever.  I bought my bottle from my hair stylist about two months before I moved (and I still have some).  I happen to be sitting in the chair when a guy came around trying to sell it.  He had samples so she tried it on my hair right there and I couldn't believe it (you can use it on wet or dry hair).  I asked him for a sample and he gave it to me.  Then I called her and wanted her to order it for me which she did.  I got it cheaper than it is listed at the following link but I will buy it from the internet for that price if I can't find it cheaper when I run out.

Anyone else have any beauty items they would like to give up?   :p

Oh my lord, when I was googling MoroccanOil I found this one blog (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bodyconfidential.co.uk/images/22409ce7lg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.kristopherdukes.com/category/style&usg=__JO3d_z6hwXTL7MkJhTdG-9KvYgI=&h=800&w=600&sz=74&hl=en&start=31&sig2=9yo0RksQ5Yf8_xROIlFpzA&um=1&tbnid=Z70qgNpznXsLNM:&tbnh=143&tbnw=107&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dglycolic%2Bacid%2Bon%2Bhands%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D21%26um%3D1&ei=cKZLS7HWDqW6tAP-luz1Dw) and it cracked me up.  He makes me laugh.  Anyway, he linked to this picture of Sarah Jessica Parker.  They must film her with super high tech cameras when they shoot her commercials for Garnier because in her commercials (and in pictures in magazines) her skin looks like she is in her 20's.

It actually kind of pisses me off when you think about it.  You see pictures of women your age or you see them on TV and you feel all inferior because they have perfect skin, hair or bodies.  Most of it is airbrushed or trick photography and we know it yet we feel self-conscious about our own bodies because we feel we should look just as good as them (who have oodles of money to spend on making them look their best).  I guarantee she has veneers on her teeth too.

I wish I could walk around with photo shop.  Man.  That would be cool.

Yesterday.?  On Fox there was a short skit with the subject being that men pay way less for skin upkeep then woman.

Three products for eye cream, 2 for woman one for men had the exact ingredients, one of the woman's products as $5.00 more and the other $15.00 more---

We are buying the brand not the contents.    Like food, store brand is exactly like the big name stuff, made by the same people just a different label.

I worked at Cosmolab in Tenn. making makeup and the only makeup that was different is Avon. They had special areas for that product, extra precautions against infection and  keeping purity of their product.  Workers were spot checked for E-Coli as was the product.

We rolled off  in other areas Revlon and Ester Larder in the same batch as well as the $1.00 cosmetics, we just changed the label.  I was surprised at first with this practice, some very expensive cosmetics had the identical ingredients of drug store products.

The skin preserving industry and cosmetics are a multimillion dollar industry, for moisturiser the men's products cannot be beat, they have added ingredients as beard stubble can give rise to that beard burn most woman get at one time or another in their life after a late night of passion.

Then the eyes, our sight is to put it is one of the most important features of our senses, some of these foreign made products can blind you or cause horrid problems.

One last thing that is odd, we made a product for nails and the tubes it was placed in said made in China.    Not the product, but the tubes themselves.    No where did it say the product itself was made in the USA.

This is homework girls, a bit of work compairing ingredients can save you hundreds of dollars a year and save your sight to boot.

If we could find the formula to turn our skin into what the leather makers do for Doe hide, that ultra soft supple, non wrinkling, last for 50 years or more skin-------some one is going to rule the world.

Vesta made some really good points.

I have used Clinique for probably 30 years....primarily because of their sensitive skin line.

In the last 5-6 years....I have started using many of the drug store products when Clinique stopped making some of my favorite things...in particular an eye cream.

If you've read above....my skin is a real pain in the tush! If I walk through a spider web...which is quite common in my job, and also around the outside of my house since I live in the woods....I will rash up everywhere the web hit me. If I touch something with mold or mildew on it - or something that has gotten "bug-y"....very common with lockboxes...and then touch my face....I welt where my fingertips touched.... :banghead: I have gotten better about carrying Purell in the car and using it after going in a foreclosure or messing with a lockbox.

In any event....I started using Neutrogena products. I really, really like them. Also Aveno.

Neutrogena has a liquid moisturizer with a 15 sun screen, Daily Skin Saver that I have used for years. I mix a bit of it with a dab of Neutrogena anti-acne/anti-aging (it's in a tube) and spread it all over my face. It has a bit of salicylic acid in it. I do still use two Clinique products for skin tone evening out, and anti-gravity cream - on top of the other. Only reason I'm still using them is, though they are quite expensive, one bottle will last a minimum of 6 months and one jar will last me for close to a year. I can justify the costs that way.  :-)

I keep flipping around on the eye cream....I go back and forth between a Clinique(a cream), the Fructis roller ball, and an Aveno liquid. I sleep in my contacts, and my eyes tend to be swollen when I wake up and all of those are "puffiness reducers". I did buy a L'Oreal product that is two products in one container. I like what it did for the skin around my eyes...but it make little bumps too... :bawl: Neutrogena has the best eye concealer that I have tried other than Clinique...again there is the huge cost difference.

I have stuck with Clinique loose powder, as it lasts a long time, and it's all I put on my face. Then I flip around with different L'Oreal blushes.

I have used Cover Girl or L'Oreal mascaras and eyeshadows for years. Can't really tell the difference in them from the Clinique. They are less than half the price, and have a good color selection. Neutrogena has started making eyeshadow and liner, I have one of each and like them....though I prefer the eyeshadow over the liner. I don't take them off before going to bed (hate oily eye makeup remover and so do my contacts) and none of them smear all over my pillowcase or my face while sleeping.

I still like Clinique lipsticks the best, but usually will pick up a L'Oreal. Cover Girl makes me look like I got bad Botox injections.. :lmao: L'Oreal has a good "stain" lipstick with a glosser. I don't really care for the glosser, but the stain stays on forever, and I use a different glosser. It does dry my lips out so, I tend to use it when going out to dinner or something rather than just running around.

I use the Dove cleansing cloths for Sensitive skin to wash my face with at night and the bar soap for washing my face in the shower and getting rid of eye makeup.

What works for one person, may not work for another, but at least with the "drug store" brands....if it doesn't work or you get a reaction from it....you haven't spent a whole bunch of money finding out it's not a good product for you.

The View and The Today Show w KathyLee and Hoda....both shows frequently do segments comparing the drug store brands with "designer" brands...and I believe they keep the info on their websites. Good place to find out about makeups, shampoos, lotions and potions.

Deb, that is so funny.  My mom made me get on Clinique right off the bat, and up until recently, when the prices kept soaring, that is all I would use.  Now, I use some Physician's Formula, but I still get the Clinique Mascara, and Lipstick.  I don't go anywhere without my Raspberry Glace'.  I also use a significant amount of Aveeno products, and they have a tinted facial cream, that has UV protection.  I have been using that for over a year, and have noticed a significant difference in the texture of my face.  My worry/frown lines are decreasing. YAY.

I also like Burts Bees products too.

I'm posting this info for Karin because she asked about it in another thread and I don't want to piss Thor off by making a thread go of course.   :p

This is about Latisse/Lumagin for eye lashes. My lashes are seriously a ton longer, blacker and thicker.  It takes a few weeks before you can tell but once you start to notice you will become addicted.  I can go with out mascara but with mascara they look even better.  When I had UVeitis and had to dilate my eye every day I wore those shade deals you get at the eye doctor under my sun glasses, my eye lashes would hit them when I blinked.

There are some side effects, they claim your upper eye lid can darken slightly (I haven't had  that happen) but goes away when you stop using it, your eyes can turn brown right around the pupil (my eyes are already brown) but that is with glaucoma patients who use it as drops and for years.  I have never heard that happening to anyone and I have read a ton about it.  You have to use it every day for 16 weeks to see the full results but I started seeing results in less than a month but after a few months they were even better.  I purchased an eyeliner brush and just wash it after each use (they suggest you buy their special brushes...I have had no problems using the same brush every day).  After your eyelashes reach the length you want you cut it back to twice or three times a week.  If you stop using it when your eyelashes naturally fall out your new lashes will grow back in the length they are now.  But if you continue to use it your lashes will grow in the same long length they were after you used Latisse.  They also say to use one drop on each disposable applicator for each eye.  I use one drop that I put on the bathroom counter (clean of course) and dip my eye liner brush into the drop.  There is enough (with left over) to do both eyes.  What ever is left I "paint" on my eye brows.

Here is a link to purchase it from all day chemist: https://www.alldaychemist.com/936_Latisse

This one has had botox, I can tell.  Watch both of her reviews.

Here is a follow up after she tried a different product.  She ended up liking the latisse better.  She talks about alldaychemist.com. She also shows a eyeliner brush exactly like what I use.

Here is another review:

She talks about at first how her lashes were getting long but that some of them were falling out (or at least she thought they were).  I went through that period too.  My lashes looked a little "spidery" for a couple of weeks then they started to fill in and get thicker.

Go to youtube and put in lumagin or latisse and watch other reviews.

I have looked at latisse but was concerned about the cautions for contact lens users and also turning my eyes color...they are blue or green depending on what I am wearing.

Supposedly you have to take your lenses out before applying the stuff until it dries... :(

They have never had anyone's eye change color using latisse.  It's the people who use it for glaucoma, from using the drops (lumagin) IN their eyes not on the lashes but since they are the same medication they have to give the precaution.  I use it at night after I wash my face.  It dries quickly.  Then you don't have to worry about your contacts.  If you are really worried about your eyes changing color maybe you should google it and see if anyone has actually had their eyes change color.  But if you are afraid that your eyes will change color, don't use it.

I ordered some of the products from the following company (they are inexpensive).  I haven't received them yet but will let you know what I think when I get them.  All of the products have Urea (yes I know what Urea is :p ) and most have alpha hydroxy acid (all different percentages).  Some have lactic acid.

http://www.dermaltherapy.com/skin-care-products.asp

From their website:

Quote
Deep Moisturizing Urea - Nature's Own Skin Moisturizer

Urea is an important part of your skin’s natural moisturizing system.

The body uses manufactured urea in the same way as the urea naturally found in the skin. Scientists call it a true “humectant” because it is an important component of the body’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF).

Urea causes hard dry skin cells to "unpack" and expose their water binding sites, thus enabling the cell to absorb and retain additional moisture. This action is also known as hydrotopic solubilization and several independent clinical investigations and studies prove that it works.

Unfortunately, urea on its own does not feel like a good moisturizing lotion. It is chemically unstable and actually leaves the skin feeling dry to the touch.

That is what makes DERMAL THERAPY such an effective formula. The pharmacists and scientists who developed DERMAL THERAPY use a special stabilized urea formulation that is precisely balanced and blended with other moisturizing ingredients including pure silk proteins and alpha hydroxy acids.

The results are efficacious moisturers that actively replenish moisture to the lowest skin depths and leave the skin looking silky smooth and feeling wonderful.

I still have issues with my face breaking out.  I started taking a daily multivitamin and it cleared up some of it.

It may be food-related.  Beer and nachos are not part of a balanced diet.

Check out the link I posted about the peel.  Go to the acne section and read what they have listed for it.  Women and men have used the peels to control their acne.

ARgggghhhhhhhhhh.......

I planted these little 2.5 foot tall blue spruces in the urns at my front door, before Christmas, thinking I could put little fairy lites on them for the holidays and then plant them somewhere come spring. Put happy little yellow pansies around them, as pansies will bloom here in the winter.

Found battery operated LED lites at Big Lots.

I was a happy camper with how they looked.

Today I go outside and take the lites off....bring them in lay them on the counter to get dry from snow/ice melt.

Instead of being smart and washing my hands....I got distracted and started doing something else.

My face itched....and I rubbed from forehead down to my chin.

Took a shower about a half hour later....got out of the shower and my face looks like BEG's little punkin's legs...

When will I learn to not touch my face after touching any f'n plant outside...... :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:

Globbed on the Elidel and at least it doesn't itch as much....just look like a kid with measles... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

In my next lifetime....I'm coming back with great skin. :censored:

What's so incredibly stupid is that I just healed up the last few places from when I planted the damn things and got stabbed by the little needles....so I knew better than to touch and not wash my hands.

There's something on the very tip of blue spuce needles that will break off into the skin....almost like the plant protects itself.

Besides the issue I have with my skin .... I have bad pine, fir, evergreen allergies.

I KNOW BETTER!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Man Deb that really stinks.  I get a rash when I touch trees with needles too.  I wonder what it is exactly that causes it.

Why should this be for women only?
I take care of my skin...I'm VERY vain.

I use the alpha and beta hydroxy acids and moisturizers from this place...

Have you had allergy testing?

The pine, fir, evergreen was among the worst for me. It's not just contact, I have a problem with the pollen from them. In the springtime...pine pollen is so bad around here, it coats everything in yellow.

I haven't had a real tree in years....

I used leave my makeup on at night then when I started getting a couple sun spots I started using Obagi (which I don't use anymore) and you have to wash your face every night.  Now it is a habit.  I can't go to sleep with makeup on.  I am actually use to my face with out makeup now.

I wash my face...just not my eyes...I wash my eye makeup off in the shower in the mornings. I don't like that oily eye makeup remover...just use Dove for sensitive skin.

I wash it all off at night, then I look like I don't have any eyelashes until I put mascara on in the morning

I wash my face at night.  But, by then whatever makeup I have had on has dissapeered.  It takes maybe 3 minutes to put on what I do.  Most of the time, I just do mascara and a sunscreen.

I don't know if it is a lack of motivation, or laziness.  On the weekends, no makeup, unless I am going out to dinner or something.  I guess I am just wierd.   :clueless:

It's rare for me not to have mascara on. It's the only way to tell I really do have eyelashes.

Know how you get asked what beauty item will you want if stranded on a deserted island?

Mine would be mascara. Second would be a bottle of Neutrogena Healthy Skin moisturizer.

There was a product out years ago that I cannot find in the last 15 years.  It was sold at Wallmart called Rain Tree.

Very few woman wore makeup where I worked, for various reasons.  When I found this product it was less then a month before coworkers wanted to know what I was using.   It gave my face a shine like a baby's butt, skin as soft as melting butter.

Now about this permanent makeup.   I had the semi permanent makeup eye liner and eyebrows done for a fortune and it only lasts about 2 years.  My friends went to the unlicensed and unregulated Asian shops and theres lasts forever. I was afraid of infection etc. but on second thought should have taken a chance.  The Asian Shops mix and match colors to bring out the undertones in the eye color, some had shades of blue on the bottom lashes that made the white of the eye look very white with perhaps the top lid lined with flecks of gold to make the eye color itself dance in the light.

Options included permanent blush and lipstick, the lips were defined as one would would with a lip liner and filled in.  No Botox needed as they could give you a larger or smaller lip shape.    Eye brows were shaped perfectly and most Asians just shaved the brows, sounds odd but one would have to be nose to nose with a woman before you could tell.    Most of the Woman shaved their intire face and applied antibiotic jell or cream, took off the dead cells and fine fuzz, make up if they used it just glided on.

Cost back then was $100.00 for the eye lining $100.00 for the eye brows, I never checked into what the charge for blush or lips was.

Silly me, I was afraid of the legal implications of using the Asian method as it was and is illegal, done in someones kitchen, and or bathroom.   I kick myself today as when I run into someone non Asian that took a chance way back 20 or more years ago, except for gravity they have not changed one bit.  Time has stood almost still for these woman who in their 60+ years and do little more then shave their face every 2-3 days, slap on the antibiotic cream and a moisturiser only thing they use is a bit of mascara.  OH yes they use sun block as people with tattoos must do to keep them from fading no matter where on the exposed body they may be.

This eyelash stuff is interesting, the cost is outside my ball park $140.00 for a tiny bottle---OMG.

L'Oreal is advertising a lash builder/thickener. Sounds similar to the Latisse stuff....but it has to be a whole lot cheaper.

I have heard of Asian shops doing the tatooing but I don't know if any do around here. I do go to a Vietnamese nail place and outside of nails/toes, they only do waxing. I do know that several of them have their eyebrows tatooed and their lips are lined also.

I do a know a woman who has had her lip line tatooed for years. She had it done outside of her lips to make them look fuller. They look alright when her lipstick is fresh - but when her lipstick fades off while eating or drinking - they look strange. And something that all the men seem to notice....and not favorably.

I would need some serious drugging to let anyone near my eyes to tatoo liner on.....or hit me over the head with a sledgehammer. I had a mole removed from just under my lower lid almost 30 years ago (ouch!) when I had a major scar revision done on my arm. I was super drugged up on twilight stuff and locals and I still flipped out when the doctor came near my eye with a scapel. There were no drugs when he took out the stitches and I thought I was going to pass out!

I handle most stuff pretty well, unless it involves my eyes....then I'm a big baby.

I just saw a banner advertising the lash builder from L Oreal at the top of the last page.

About the eye tattooing, if you have ever had a make over by a cosmetician that is very smiler.  It took 5 freaking hours to do eyes upper and lower lids and the eye brows.  Included in the cost was a lunch break and she supplied the food and drinks.

They do not use a honking big device as is used for body tats, the sound is very low, like a hum, it is more like a gentle tapping.

Her office had a recline bed, soothing music and I almost fell asleep, I was nice and comfy.  She was dressed in a throw away paper suite, one of those head sets with magnifying lenses and a full plastic face shield.  She changed her gloves each time she finished up one eye or brow.  She had a no interruptions order and unless there was a fire she stayed with me giving me all her attention.

Only problem was she bandaged my upper face and I needed a ride home, the bandages stayed on for 24 hours and I could not go outside for 3 days. I also had to read all ingredients  in anything I put on my face to insure there was no glycol acid in the product.

If I had the money to do this every 2 years or so I would definitely consider it.  However she did not mix or match colors as the Asians do and did not do anything but the eyes and brows.
