That was no Irene for me! Power out for about 30 hrs and a big pine leaning on an oak in the back yard is all. No worries! Christmas Lasagna is warming on the wood stove and I can eat it in electric light!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I want to puke every time I see the "SUPERSTORM" graphic on the news.  The MSM was really hoping for a terrible horrible tragedy.

A Cat 1 storm that falls apart 15 minutes after making landfall is not a "superstorm".

(No, I am not minimizing the death and destruction that took place.)

I think it was the mashing together of three storm systems that earned Sandy that label.

We.re doing fine, still no power but we have the generator, my family.s home is still under water and hubby is texting with a friend who had to evacuate at the shore and he has no idea if his home was destroyed. We.ve heard about all the damage but still haven.t seen pics of it.

From our Coastie friend from the failed Zuni restoration project:

Quote
Just thought I'd bring my favorite internet buddies up to date about Sandy. In four words it was a pain in the a$$. You know what they say about when a soldier is in battle, he doesn't really know what's going on anywhere else because he's concerned about what is in front of him. Well that's pretty much the phenomenon from my point of view.

We were so busy taking care of business and mitigating our own disasters that I literally paid no attention to all the mayhem around me. To make matters worse, When I finally made it home Monday night, I sat down breathed a sigh of relief, had a home made Salisbury steak for dinner than our power went out. We are still without power, its great trying to shave with a flashlight in one hand and a razor in the other, let me tell you.

We lost two Data Centers to the 11 foot surge in Jersey City and Weehawken. Fortunately I work with a great bunch of engineers and we took down our UPS system, switchboards, etc in an orderly fashion so that all power was killed by the time the surge reached us. Yep it reached us flooding through our doors and any other way it could get in. At high tide, we had about 2 feet of water in our Electric switchboard room and in our offices on the first floor. As of today, we will begin the dewatering process and removing all the flotsam and jetsam from the grounds and parking lot.

At 299 Park, we lost three windows from the 33rd, 29th and 16th floors and had a little water damage but over all 299 had a lot less problems than the other properties.

I couldn't get back in on Tuesday, all bridges and tunnels were closed or flooded and the ferries stopped running. So I just listened in the dark to the wind and rain ripping around my house. We had 90 mph winds in Rockland County.

This morning coming in was quite a challenge. It took an extra hour to get in. I was ok til I got to the Jersey line, then ran into a lot of power problems, traffic lights out and blockades everywhere. I finally got to Weehawken and was waiting for the ferry. It arrived but they couldn't open the electric gate to allow passengers on. Needless to say I was Pi$$ed. I yelled at the guy to fix it cause I just went through hell to get here and I wasn't going to let a stuck gate stop me from getting into Manhattan. He ripped the chain off the sprockets with a pair of channel locks and slid it back by hand so I got to work at 8:20AM. I left the house at 5 AM. I hope the home commute tonight is a little easier.

I have a question here that has been bugging me.

As I look at all the distruction on the sea board and the owners that are bitching about little help, it comes to me that these owners have lost  homes worth in the mega dollar.    Almost impossible to buy a beach front home for less then $800,000 any where on the coast.  So None of them have insurance ???????

Those that got hit hardest were the ones that were closest to the water.  The big homes and the most expensive summer places.
The homes back of the big guys are also so expensive, with beach access are  crazy, a 4 room cottage for $250, 000 dollars .

I feel sorry for the people that lost their homes on the storm,  but I question these people that want and demand the Government to come in and help them.  Darn it all why should he government help people that received a boodle from their insurance company and now demand some kind of help from the Government ????

I'm curious too.  Just watched a lady crying to Chris Christie begging him to help her family.  They just lost everything.  I don't want to sound insensitive about this, but when you live in an area that is susceptible to severe storms, especially along waterways, shouldn't there be some kind of preplanning and acceptance of the possibility you could lose it all?  And the warnings too. This storm formed a few weeks ago.

California has a lot of severe fires, most with little warning, especially this time of year.  People who build/buy in dry hilly areas are made aware of this possibility constantly.

Bingo. Those who make a CHOICE to live where they do, do so at their own peril.

I have no sympathy (that's a word between shit and syphilis in the dictionary) for someone who builds a half million dollar home on Key West or Shitstain, NJ and isn't prepared to lose it to the elements.

Whiny-assed dipshits who think that government is going to give them a handout to make up for their folly in their having made a personal choice deserve nothing but the shit end of a stick.

Do these people crying for help have insurance? If I lived there I would have a major flood insurance policy ...

Speaking of insurance. I am hoping that companies don't file for bankruptcy left and right like they did with Katrina. They are saying that the total damage from Sandy is upwards of $50 billion...

After all these years after living in (ahem) New England, I know better. flashlights, candles, water, at least half tank in car, jumper cables, shovel, an overnight bag, with set of clothes, extra jacket and boots, emergency first aid kit. With all the technology  they have regarding weather, these people should have been somewhat more prepared. a copy of their wills, insurance, extra cash, passports in a safety deposit box in a bank.  So many people are like, it will never happen to us, but one never knows when mother nature is going to have a temper tantrum...

My wife and I looked into the price of a beach front home in Avalon NJ a few years ago. I didn't see any below $2 million.  (not that we could afford one anyway)

But this wasn't a problem for me, because you offered to insure my house. I know you didn't do it personally, but you, as a taxpayer, are the guarantee behind federal flood insurance. Should a big storm wipe out half the coast, you'll cover our losses — up to a quarter-million dollars. Thanks — we appreciate it — but what a dumb policy.

We have power but still no tv and internet, we.re getting nervous now because of a shortage of gas, some people are saying 7 to 10 days before a delivery is made because of the ports being closed.

My heart goes out to you because I know how that feels.

I certainly remember waiting in line for gas back in the seventies. It was unreal, a 45 minute to an hour wait in line. I would shut the engine down and when the line moved restarted and hoped the battery or starter did not quit.

I had a CB radio at the time and listened as truckers were organizing a kind of "sit-in" with their trucks at five points Levittown PA.. Unfortunately, things quickly got out of hand and some idiots decided to take thier anger out on the gas station owners.

http://www.levittowners.com/memories.htm

It was the Middle East countries who controlled the oil and were angry at the Camp David Accord.

Quote
The community's otherwise placid exterior was again disturbed during the so-called suburban gas riots of June 1979 in the wake of the Camp David Peace Accords, which resulted in a second embargo by Arab oil-producing nations. The unrest occurred June 24–25, 1979, as lines swelled and tempers flared in the heart of Levittown at an intersection known as Five Points, a location surrounded by six service stations, two of which were severely damaged by vandalism in the riots.

There were promises of making America "energy independent" BUT the radical left had other ideas, as we all know.

PSNH reporting that at the peak they had 150-160K customers out (of total 500K customers) not including NH customers of Unitil or National Grid.

They're now down to 600.  Bout freakin time they got one right.  And I'd be willing to bet most of the contract crews were gobbled up by NY/NJ first, and we didn't get a whole lot here.
