This thread was in response to some place in Tennessee where a house burnt down while the fire deptment sat and watched because the owner did not pay the yearly fee.

What gets me, is that the DUmmies fail to apply this to the ObamaCare law forcing insurance companies to accept pre-existing conditions.

I live in Tennessee. I live in the county, and do not pay city taxes, only county. Those who live inside the city limits pay both county and city taxes....and they are almost equal in amount. Both are based on the tax value of the dwelling.

If I lived inside the city limits, I would have city fire protection, city police protection, once a week garbage pickup. All paid for by city taxes.

We pay for a yearly subscription for fire protection based on square footage of the dwelling. I think the minimum is about $175/yr. If we don't pay, and our house catches on fire. The fire dept will come and put it out, and send an atrociously expensive bill, based on water consumption, manpower, and number of trucks called to the fire. A client's daughter didn't pay hers, her house caught on fire in the garage, spread a bit to the kitchen and family room, lots of smoke and water damage. The fire department bill was $4000 something. She tried to get out of paying it, and was told to pay or be turned over to a collection agency. She paid, and her homeowner's insurance went up....not only because of the claim for the fire, but because she did not have fire protection subscription. I've always had to provide proof that mine was paid to my insurance company.

We either pay for once a week garbage pickup through a couple of different garbage collection companies, about $75/quarter for curb service. Or take the garbage to the dump and dump for free - no furniture, appliances or yard debris.

We are protected by the county sheriff's department through the county taxes.

Paying for fire protection and garbage pickup in the county,  is considerably cheaper than paying city taxes.

I pay town taxes.  Almost got run over by some douchenozzle hot-rodding over the hill (at least 50 in a 30 mph zone.)  I had to literally jump out of the road and was yelling at him to slow down as he drove by.

Then the dipshit TURNS AROUND, and gets all upset because I was getting my mail, blah blah blah...to which I reply he knows he was speeding, and why doesn't he just hang around while I dial 911 and have the police show up?  He then turns around AGAIN and hauls ass WITH HIS LIGHTS OFF (although I already had his plate).

The police's response?  "Can you come down and make a report?  What would you like us to do?"

I swear that my taxes are wasted on donut-suckers.

It's the same for an ambulance. Rural Metro is the contractor for both. If you don't pay for ambulance service with the fire protection, you are charged if you ever need one. I've never paid for ambulance insurance. It's covered in homeowners and auto. Maybe health too. If you don't have some type of personal insurance policy that will cover the cost, you are sent a bill.

They will come after you if you don't pay too.

How so?  The fire department she's talking about is paid for by subscription, not taxes; for someone who chooses not to pay, why would the fire department have any responsibility to fight a structure fire at that person's place?  Seems like the homeowner took the risk knowingly, and it's entirely on them if there's a fire after making that choice.

Exactly. Most mortgage companies will require proof that the subscription is paid. Homeowners insurance, may not even ask. It's a whole lot easier to pay a couple hundred dollars a year on the anniversary of when you first subscribed, than to have a fire, and pay the fire department thousands of dollars in one fell swoop!!! :o The bill is sent out about 3 months before it's due to remind you.

Just a quick wander into the topic swamp.  I was up your way a few days back, stopped at a drunken dognut where the comely wench asked if I would like a sample of their pumpkin dognut.  I politely declined but she gave me one anyway.  Ok, whatever.   I ate the pumpkin thing when I got home and darn if it wasn't pretty good, so, I decided to pick up a half dozen ( six for those in Rio Linda ) to have with some cider sitting in the fridge.  It cost me $4.99 for six (quick do the math or accept mine that it was $.83 per dognut ).  Now you know why cops need to make $100k per year. :hammer:  Dognuts aren't cheap!!

Btw bobo has been all over the house fire threads and one on the new Jag.  Woe is me, nobody is buying my sthick!~!

It just busts my balls that I pay over $5K a year in property taxes and that barely covers trash pickup and snow plowing about 10 days out of the year.

Cops in this town are fuggin useless.  I've already put a call into the city councilman for my ward.  Told him that if he wanted to keep the cops rolling in dough forever, just put one halfway up the hill and even if you only nail the speeders going 20 mph or more over, he'd still be busier than a three-legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen pond (or words to that effect.)

Then again, what do you expect from a bunch of Keystone knuckleheads who can't figure out why the same drugstore gets hit twice in less than two weeks (and 3 times this year so far--all the others have been hit at least twice except Wally World).  I've also talked to one who told me exactly how many cops they have out at any given time...(shudder).

All I can say is if the bad guys show up, shoot first, call for cleanup afterwards.

This is the same thing that went on in the '20's. You can still see some of the old cast iron plaques on buildings in older cities. You paid the fire department, they gave you a plaque. If a building started on fire, the fire dept would show up. If you had a plaque, they put the fire out. If you didn't and your neighbor did, they would let you burn and protect your neighbor.

Ahhhhhhh, but there is a big difference!

Latte Libs don't give a shit about the Primitives! They could care less if they can't afford healthcare, after all, they have theirs.

Whether or not their butt buddies can get married, after all, most of them can afford to work their way around it.

Or whether or not the Geys can serve openly in the military, after all, not many of them would ever consider serving their country.

As long as they have theirs, and can continue to govern over the people, they only care about extending their power.

Primitives on the other hand, dream of being in the ruling class, which of course, their leaders are making sure they will never accomplish! Ask any Primitive and they'll tell you if they were in charge, socialism/communism would work, solely because they would be running it! In their pointy little heads, greed does not exist in human form.

It's the reason the elitists in their party promise to throw them a bone every single election and the Primitives continue to follow them like little puppy dogs!

Primitives for the most part are middle class. Something the Latte Liberals are hell bent on destroying! They want their followers completely dependent upon them! Can't do that if you have a middle class. Just ask Castro or Chavez!

You have those who depend upon you for their existence, and those that get to tell you what you need to exist on! There is absolutely no middle ground!

Read this and it made me wonder what ours are on this house.....$2835.00. Other house on the 3+ acres was $4k and a smidgeon.

I don't mind paying the fire dept and for garbage pickup at all.  :-)
