The FBI was too concerned about political correctness and did not launch an investigation into a man who was later charged with killing 13 people in a 2009 attack at the Fort Hood military installation in Texas, despite significant warning signs that he was an Islamic extremist bent on killing civilians, according to a lawmaker briefed on a new report about the terrorist attack.

In emails to a known terrorist, Army Maj. Nidal Hasan expressed his support for suicide bombings and killing civilians, while the terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki, encouraged Hasan to stay in touch, Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, told The Associated Press on Wednesday after he was briefed on the findings of a new review of the attack.

The review was done by former FBI Director William Webster and was more than two years in the making. FBI Director Robert Mueller asked that Webster conduct an independent review, and the bureau is expected to release an unclassified version this week.

Much was already known about the series of oversights and missteps the government made leading to the terror attack at the Fort Hood Army post. Soon after the attack, it was revealed that members of two FBI anti-terrorism task forces saw emails between the Army psychiatrist and al-Awlaki beginning in December 2008. Those task forces reviewed the communications and decided they were in keeping with Hasan's research at the time, and as a result, no formal investigation of Hasan was opened. Hasan was writing a research paper about the effects of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But McCaul said Webster's report offers some new details that show the FBI was concerned about investigating an American Muslim in the military, and that is why an investigation was not pursued.

No surprises there.

PC is a common element in government and the FBI is definitely not immune. Neither is the ATF (Fast and Furious) and the rest of the alphabet soup agencies.  :whatever:

What pisses me off is that not one single letter of reprimand (let alone more) will result from this butchery.

Not as long as Barry is in office, nope, not a single thing is going to come out of this.

Well, okay, Hasan will probably get life without parole and then he'll live a charmed life in Leavenworth where his every want and need will be paid by you and me.  :argh:

The Army has begun administrative punishments against nine officers for what it calls "administrative and leadership failures relating to the career of Maj. Nidal Hasan," the alleged shooter in the Fort Hood, Texas, shootings that killed 13.

Army Secretary John McHugh has initiated "adverse administrative action" against the officers, according to an Army statement released Thursday on the results of an accountability review to determine if Hasan's superior officers were negligent.

I looked to see if there was some sort of update on that story (dates from March of 2011), but no dice.

Nope, they probably swept everything under the rug after the initial reporting. As the story came out, it probably went to far up the chain of command and got to uncomfortable .

I had imagined something like this:

His superiors were reprimanded and received non judicial punishment and GOMARs.

Their careers at whatever level they were at...are done.  Granted they were stopped too late to prevent the deaths of 13 soldiers....but those people are more than likely out of the Army trying to get civilian employment right now.

The officers - all lieutenant or above - will receive punishments ranging from an oral reprimand to the far more serious written letter of censure that is considered a career-ender.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1365213/Nine-Army-officers-reprimanded-failing-spot-Nidal-Malik-Hasans-radicalism.html

A Lieutenant receiving an oral reprimand means he'll probably never see above the grade of Captain.  And it will be reflected in his fitness reports as well as record of what happened placed in his permanent file.

Letter of censure or a GOMAR kills careers in their tracks.  Do not pass go do not collect $200.

Given this all happened 3 years ago...any of the above punishments ensured that if they aren't out yet...they are out processing the Army as we speak.

Now you can take my word...as a Sr. NCO with 14 years in the service...ask the retired officers we have here...or you can keep up with your wishful thinking that the Army just "swept this under the rug".

Up to you...

TRG - it isn't wrong asking for a link. You've done the same thing yourself on occasion.

Speaking for myself, I had no doubt that things happened to those officers (PC and the situation pretty much demanded it), but I thought it a little odd that nothing had been said since March 2011, even with Hasan's trial under way - finally - now.

*shrug*...military SOP.  The Army published it's report...doled out it's punishment and it's done.  Just because they don't give blow by blow updates every hour about what's happening doesn't mean they are sweeping it under the rug and giving these guys a pass as bad Dog was hinting at.

Well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. That's my point. Whether the guy is a noob or not shouldn't play a part.

You have access to Army reports. Most of the rest of us do not. And it's even questionable when the Daily Mail posts an article like that -- as they're in the business of titillation, it's not what I'd call rock-solid support for your point, though as I said, I have no doubt that the actions were taken against those officers.

Whatever your issue with BD is, hey, that's between you two. All I'm saying is it's not wrong asking for a link that supports statements you or anybody else is making, regardless of the claim.

I first suggested they were sweeping it under the, but look at how this administration operates, and you can understand why.  It wasn't a slam at the military, but at this administration. Ultimately Obama is the final arbiter of what gets released and what doesn't.  The MSM sees to that.

They can not talk about it all they want to...call it a work place accident...but the military won't.  The people that turned a blind eye to what Nidal was doing and how he was behaving have been dealt with and they won't be in charge of anyone anymore.

OK....

I've been out of the service for a while now.  But since when is Lieutenant superior to a Major?

Or did I misread something?

Seemed odd to me too.  There are a couple of possibilities...the likely reason is that there were Medical Corps Lieutenants that saw what he was doing and said nothing...they weren't in his chain...but are guilty because they kept their mouth shut.

Now that sounds very plausible.
