Title: Who drove the oldest car as their regular vehicle
Post by: CG6468 on September 12, 2012, 03:03:14 PM
I had a 1930 Model A pickup, but I was restoring it and not driving it as my everyday car.

My oldest was a 1954 Mercury with 3 on the tree. I could run straight pipes just by taking off the crossover pipe on Merc's first overhead valve engine.

It had the weakest clutch linkage of any car made back then.

The 2-door hardtop is more common than the 4-door sedan I had.

I have a feeling some people will have a distinct advantage over others in this thread. :old:

I'm currently driving my MG every day.  It's the oldest vehicle I've owned that moved under its own power.

Between 1986-89 I had my first three cars-- a 1974 and two 1973s.  Since then all have been newer, or better long-lasting quality.

The newest car I ever bought was a 1987, in 1989.

In two years my present car will be as old as my first was.  On the other hand it started out as a better quality vehicle and has been better cared for.

So far, I'm only reading  who has owned an old car, not who is currently driving an old car, with the exception of Chris. Maybe I'm missing something? I drive a 97 F150 Supercab, two wheel drive. It's been a great truck for me. ::knocks on wood::

1953 Studebaker Commander....2 door hardtop. Drove it everyday to work, school and on dates.

Someone mentioned a '54 Merc. Old truck mechanic I worked with had one. A 2 door hardtop, red with black top. He had a '57 FORD 312 cu. in. Thunderbird eng. in it. Bored .030 over, balanced, blueprinted(?) and decked. It would turn 8,000 rpm's easy without straining and no vibration. It had a nice mellow 'moan' to it when it was wound out.

That's why I made the topic of the thread; "Who drove the oldest car as their regular vehicle"

This is from the younger teen days of folks (usually guys), usually before marriage and other distactions. The days of hot rods (not the renamed street rods of today), 3-window coupes, 4-on-the-floor, Moon hubcaps, Continental kits, dual quads, Lake's pipes, or stock, bare-boned 4bbl carbs (one or 2), and factory 2 and 4 carb cars and trucks.

Etcetera....

I had a '54 Merc. It sounded great when the secondaries kicked in. Setting the point at which they kicked in was simple.

I’m Jonathan Klinger and I’m spending one full year driving a 1930 Model A everywhere I go. (Starting October 13, 2010) Why? Because not everything a person owns should contain a computer.

He made it the full year and then some.

My first was a '38 Olds, 3 on the floor. I drove it to and from high school and to my job jerkin' sodas at a mom and pop corner drug store.

My next was a '49 Merc coupe........then a '50 Olds followed by a '51 Merc sedan. Right now, my daily driver is a 23 year old Bronco.

'38 Olds - $50 in '55
'49 Merc - $250 in '55
'50 Olds - $450 in '56
'51 Merc - $450 in '57

Yeah! I'm that old.........(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/tongue2.gif)

I drove a 55 bone stock 4 dr 55 chevy on a regular basis. It had a 6 cylinder with 3 on the tree. I traded an 8 track player for it. The most dependable car I ever owned. :-)

For years I drove vehicles that on avg were about 10 yrs old.  last year I broke the trend by Purchasing a 2011 Lincoln town Car (last year they were produced) and a 2010 Ford Expedition in a cash package deal. As luck would have it they are both the same color.

Saved in the neighborhood of 15K on the deal. Made me happy , made a young salesman happy and a dealer happy so all is good.

For about a year I owned a 1930 Model A pickup truck. I kick myself for selling that one.
