Title: I am about to attempt microwave Hamburger Helper.
Post by: Mr Mannn on August 25, 2013, 06:46:05 PM
I have freeze dried ground beef. Two and a half cups equal one pound.
I do not have milk, so I will add extra water and butter to compensate. I don't buy milk because it goes bad before I can use it.

The noodles get my spaghetti treatment. 6 minutes nuked in a container of water until soft. drain the water, add the rest.

it should work. I have spaghetti as a back up just in case.

edit to add...there is not a lot of noodles to soften up here. and I'm not sure a whole pound of hamburger is needed. I'm start with a mere 4 minutes for the noodles.

4 minutes and the noodles are bigger, but still hard. I'll let then soak for a few. The dead cow flesh will nuke for 3 minutes, that should be fine. Now the instructions call for everything to be added together and most of the time involved to for the noodles to get soft. doing the noodles now will shorten the entire process.

2 and a 1/2 cups of hamburger make way too much meat. I'll need to pare it down next time. I added 3/4 cup of water...and that maybe too much. Still, nuke it enough and the water will evaporate I think.

Well it turned out OK. Too much meat, but I can change that next time. I've proved this is doable with just a microwave. The extra butter doesn't really compensate for milk. so I'll get a small carton next time.

Powdered milk comes in handy.  So do small cans of evaporated milk for cooking.

Mr. Mann....curious.  Do you have a stove, or do you just prefer microwave cooking?

I have a stove top/hotplate. But you have to use posts and pans...and then you have to wash them afterwards!
My time is valuable. With a microwave, I can use all disposable dishes n'stuff.

I'm with you on this one.

My sink and pot scrubber tools and implements get used on a daily basis. After 10 hours of work and 2 hours of practice, I don't have a lot of time for that stuff, but I make time. Gotsta.

Sunday morning I sent Chris_ back home after he'd had a chance to munch on some biscuits (from scratch) and sausage gravy (from scratch). (He didn't want any eggs.)

No big deal. I do like using parchment paper rather than greasing up a sheet pan, but damn.

That reminds me -- I used the last of the lard in the biscuits.

Ah yes. A picture of the happy wife. alas, I be without one.

So once every two years or so, I go to Costco. I buy a 1000 spoons, a 1000 forks, and a 1000 knives:
all plastic. I have a pillar of paper plates. another of paper bowls. I save and rinse out the big drink containers from fast food joints-the closest I come to washing. I have deep dish disposable microwave containers.

Bottom line...you do dishes I don't. I toss my trash every morning when I go to work. Nothing builds up, No unwashed dishes in the sink. and Merry Maids will stop by every two weeks to clean up for me.

Apart from occasional culinary adventures, life is pretty good.
If I had a wife it would be better. But I have to make do with the hand I've been dealt.

I am thinking of buying a skillet. I remember browning hamburger when I was in my 20's.

You need to go get some Carnation evaporated milk, even the store brand.

The little cans are about 2/3 of a cup.
Some things just require milk, water is NOT a substitute.

Plastic cutlery and paper plates. wow....   :thatsright:

Yep. Not very good.
I think I ended up with 2 1/2 pounds of meat in that meal....Not quite what I remember.

Not the condensed milk. If you made that mistake, you would be invited to my club.
