..6 Superfoods You're Not Eating
By SHAPE magazine | Healthy Living – Fri, Jan 11, 2013 3:26 PM EST.. .
Are you eating these six superfoods?by SHAPE Diet Doctor Mike Roussell, phD
Power through your workout, boost your health, and lose weight with these common, yet oft-overlooked foods.
Seaweed
Perhaps most commonly eaten wrapped around a sushi roll, nori is loaded with iodine, a mineral essential for proper thyroid function. While iodized salt was introduced in 1924 to prevent goiter, the increased emphasis on low-sodium diets and the popularity of sea salt, which often doesn't contain iodine, have recently resurfaced concerns about getting enough iodine. This trace mineral isn't the only benefit of sea vegetables. Nori contains high levels of vitamin K and iron, micronutrients essential for proper cellular function. Look for nori pieces in the international section of your supermarket and crumble them on top of chili, soups, and salads. (This will add a little extra salty flavor, so if you are salt sensitive, use less in your recipe.)
Sauerkraut
Considering cabbage is low-carb, high-fiber, and contains cancer-fighting 3-indole carbinol and d-glucarate, a compound that works to clear excess estrogen, the veggie is already a superfood. Fermenting it into sauerkraut, however, puts it on nutritional steroids. The probiotics that drive fermentation also help repopulate your digestive system with healthy, hardworking good bacteria that lower inflammation, improve digestion, and maybe even aid in weight loss. Plus fermentation increases the bioavailablity of the antioxidants found in cabbage, and the longer cabbage ferments, the higher the levels of antioxidants become, meaning your body can better absorb and use them.

Asparagus
Vitamin K is important for blood clotting and B vitamins are necessary for energy metabolism, and you can find both in asparagus. Not only is a stalk only three calories, but a recent study in the Journal of Food Science reported that asparagus can aid the body in accelerating the metabolism of alcohol. Next time you host a cocktail party, serve this superfood wrapped in prosciutto for tasty, low-carb, high-protein hors d'oeuvres that will help your guests wake up hangover-free in the morning.
I hate asparagus! :puke:

Love Asparagus and Sauerkraut!
-
I have eaten everything on that list, I must be the healthiest person ever

Me too! :cheersmate:
-
Love sauerkraut, but I'd have to stick to vitamins for the seaweed and asparagus.
Yogurt is another super food that I love too. It contains all kinds of goodies for a lot of things to keep you healthy. You can also buy that in powdered form and rehydrate it. It has a pretty good shelf life too.
-
Asparagus and Sauerkraut both make your waste smell! Anyone know if seaweed is in the same category? I wont eat seaweed!
-
Can't stand asparagus - even the white kind, available only in season - and that seaweed thing goes along with the fishheads and rice thing that turns my stomach. :puke:
Beets? Pickled beets, maybe, but ya gotta hold a gun to my head.
Cabbage? Love it in cole slaw, but cooked it ain't a real favorite. Don't even talk to me about Brussels sprouts, which is another form of cabbage, AFAIC.
The rest of that shit, fuggedaboudit. Hemp seeds? I might give those to my parrots, but nobody named me Polly lately.
-
I'm a big fan of sauerkraut. However, after I eat it, my family's not.... :-)
Love asparagus. I grill it drizzled with EVOO and italian seasoning mix.
Beets...meh. Used to love them, but now I'll eat them if they're there.
The rest is animal food.
Give me some spinach or broccoli any day.
-
I like Bavarian Sauerkraut. The rest can be done away with.
-
I love those huge sausages cooked in sauerkraut. The hub loves it too. He won't eat the canned kraut, only the fresh frozen kind in the plastic bags, but I still buy the canned and cook with it because it stores easier and longer...and if I don't tell him, he can't tell the difference.
-
No bacon or pie on that list?
"Superfoods." Pfffft.

Schnitzengruben? Fifteen is my limit on schnitzengruben!
-
Fried Tatters, cabbage & venison sausage, now that's eating.
I actually like all them "Superfoods" except the seaweed.
Didn't much care for asparagus as a youngster but love it now.
-
We had sauerkraut and italian sausage last night.
Yum-ooo!!!!!!!!!!

Naw. We've never eaten kelp.
-
Love beets and asparagus. I like to roast beets, it brings out the sweetness.
-
Wow. Broccoli's not on there?
So many people seem to detest broccoli that I always figured it was an eminently healthy food.
<<loves broccoli.

Meeeeeee too!

I stand correted. Rusty told me they served us kelp in boot camp. I didn't know this, and I worked in the mess hall for 2 weeks!

I'm not a fan of sweet vegetables. I'll eat a small amount of roasted beets if they are mixed with other, less sweet, vegetables.
I love asparagus

Roasted beets with balsamic vinegar and blue cheese. Try it some time.

Yummy!

Try roasting some broccoli or brussel sprouts they are very tasty. I drizzle then with some olive oil, salt and pepper.
Dried seaweed isn't bad!

I like Brussell sprouts with a little butter and Parmesan cheese.
Broccoli is one of my favorite vegetables. My favorite way to eat them is in Cheddar Ale Soup with ham. :-)
-
I'm not a big fan of cheese soups or potato soups. Lentil soup or split pea & ham soup - yummy.
-
Don't tell GOBUCKS about this thread. Full grown men with military avatars saying "yummy." His head would explode. :lmao:
Yuck on the beets. If I walk past a can of them in the store, I shudder.
Seaweed is not bad at all, really. It's tasteless. You ever see the bits of spinach in Italian Wedding Soup? You could sub seaweed (if you really wanted to consume it for health).
People make a big to-do about asparagus making your pee smell: I think if you just flush afterwards, it shouldn't be a problem. It doesn't "linger." It is really good for you.

I don't know about you, but my pee smells -- well, like pee.
You mean I should expect something else? :-)

Eat some asparagus and get back with me.

I am one of those lucky people who's pee doesn't change after eating asparagus. I love asparagus :-)

Maybe it always smells like asparagus, and you just don't realize it. :-)
Not that I've given any thought to what your pee smells like, CR. That would be weird.
-

Homey don't do asparagus. My pee will continue to smell like, well...pee.

No mention of beet greens, or radish greens cooked not raw. Fiddle heads in the spring and dandelion greens.
Have to be carefull with the greens some have allot of Vit.K and I am on a blood thinner. Poke salad in the south and some green they called Waldorf. Pickled cucumber skin is great.

When I lived in Maine, I never did screw up the courage to try fiddleheads. They look like something that lives in the dirt, rather than something that sprouted out of it.
Hey all you people that hate peas as much as I do. I heard our Purchasing dept. bitch about what a terrible season peas are having. Just so hard to find. :cheersmate:

I like peas just fine. Even in a cream sauce with a little onion.
-
When I was little I always had a standoff with my Mom whenever she served peas. I wasn't allowed to leave the table until I finished all of them and damned if they didn't seem to reproduce on my plate!!

Ditto! With some bacon bits on top.
-
:hammer: to all the pea people. Look at Eupher, putting the  guy there as if we were talking about bacon or something.
My mom battled me for years. Finally she gave up and let me make a salad instead. When I had to eat them, I'd swallow them like pills.

Karin, I finally tried the fiddle heads and happy to say to me they taste close to asparagus.
I was raised on pea soup with ham, sort of like a chowder, corn or clam. My favorite Peas are the defrosted raw peas in a cold Marconi salad.
Canned peas are OK once a year. Wasn't until I was 22 years old ,at a party and after a few drinks tried out marinated mushrooms. This led to my eating sober every kind of Shroom except the magic kind.
I find that when trying out a new food it does not hurt to be a bit smashed. Only exceptions are smoked Oysters or live ones, anchovies, EEL, or canned sardines.
I even learned sober to like Stinky fruit, now that is an experience.
Strangest fish I ever ate was Marlin steak. Had the texture of beef steak.

I just KNEW you were a cracker! :lmao:

I had a bad experience with eel in Japan. Never again.

Grilled marlin is good eatin'.
Cook them like tuna steaks. Make a red-hot bed of coals, brush oil on the steaks, sprinkle on some coarse sea salt and black pepper, sear the steaks on either side (rare in the middle), and serve with melted garlic butter.
