Squirrel Burgers anyone?
« on: August 10, 2009, 04:53:41 PM »
My best friend is a butcher, so when I go home to do some Squirrel hunting this October, I'm gonna get him to turn a couple days catch into burgers.  Anyone ever try this before?

I've only ever had squirrel meat in stews and just fried up, never in burger form.

I've had fried squirrel , and there is so little meat to it, that I can't see why people would waste the time hunting them.

You've never had Michigan squirrel then.  They get BIG up there.

I saw one once, that I confused as a racoon at first.  Another one.  I shot it, fell outta the tree about 30 feet.  Walked up on it, and it was still alive, so I stuck my knife in it's throat to finish the job.  The thing refused to die.  A couple minutes later I finally had to shoot it again to put it down.  Their freakin insane up there, but I guess you gotta be tough to survive those NW Michigan winters.

Squirrel, cooked in a stew, is out-of-this-world good.
We usually soak them overnight in saltwater.
They're much too tough to fry, I think, unless boiled first.

Also, a sublime regional delicacy is squirrel brains.
I was taught from childhood to never, ever shoot a squirrel in the head.

I have been told that a person could starve to death eating just those tree rats.

They have little fat and you may as well eat a tree they live in.  Nasty little buggers, like rats they eat what they can get be it deer, bear,  moose or human droppings----they are survivors.

They find a way to get into your home and eat the wiring, run about in the attic leaving urine and droppings. They will gnaw on siding and or spread disease.

May as well go a hunting for city rats for food----I do wonder why the skin from those rats that is water proof' and has a good time strength is not used to make clothing.

Rat fur would be a big time selling project.  The heck with squirrel fur,  a jacket made of rat hide will last 50 years.

I actually didn't get a chance to find out.  I devoted to much time to do deer hunting that I didn't have any real time to attempt squirrel.  I would imagine no more then 5 though.  Maybe 3 if I took all of the meat instead of just cutting the legs off.
