Title: New Mannn Experiment: Cooking dried beans with a rice cooker.
Post by: Mr Mannn on June 17, 2014, 07:09:53 PM
This weekend I will try something new.
The local store has several shelves with all sorts of dry beans.
I'll buy a bunch and play with my cooker. I think it will work.

Once I get the beans soft, what can I do with them?

Do you have any simple bachelor  recipes? I'm talking about two or three ingredient dishes with little prep.
I've got a few things on hand. Shredded cheese. Enchilada sauce. Raman flavoring. Hamburger.
I can buy a few more...

and there is all sorts of dried beans as well.
I remember I did an experiment with an 89 cent tube of three bean soup. I soaked them overnight and they were soft enough to eat the next day.

I should write a book, a "Bachelor's Guide to Cooking." or "Microwave Mayhem: a Dining Experience."
Or, "How to Really Impress the Girlfriend/Wife."

I don't have a rice cooker, so not sure how that would work.

Do you have a crock pot?  Dry beans take awhile.

Small white beans are good with ham, onion and celery.

I like the red beans with hamburger, onion, tomato sauce and chili power.

Be sure you check on them ever so often to stir and add water if needed.

You could pick up a package of tortillas, corn or flour whichever you prefer.

Mash the beans with a fork to a paste.  Mix some hamburger with the enchilada sauce.  Nuke to blend flavors a little.  Spread some beans on a tortilla, add hamburger mixture, top with cheese.  Roll up and nuke to melt the cheese.  There you go.

Repurpose your rice cooker to make tasty one-pot meals (http://lifehacker.com/5462822/repurpose-your-rice-cooker-to-make-tasty-one-pot-meals)

Some of these look good.

Well I was too lazy to try that, so I'm going the lazy route and making 4 bean soup with a microwave. (89 cent package at HyVee. if I can make this taste good, I'm set for life)

Its Saturday night. I just emptied a pack of 4 Bean soup in a container of water and placed it in the fridge. I left out the powdered flavor pack.

I previously discovered beans will get soft and edible when left overnight in a container like above. Great, that part is done. All I have to do is drain, add the proper amount of water/soup mix and heat.
Wala, I have soup.

The directions say to boil the beans in 7 cups of water. But it makes 5 6oz servings. Thats only 3.75 cups of water left. Hence that is all the water I will add to the microwave container before heating.
--I am pondering about adding a pound of hamburger to the mix.

A little math is all it takes to avoid cleaning a few pots.

Update. 26 hours later. The beans while edible are still somewhat crunchy.  So I poured the lot into my rice cooker to see if I couldn't speed things along. This may be take a while to get ready.

OK. 2 hours worked. added water in the middle to make it stretch that long. But it worked.
Now I've added the soup powder and 3 cups of water, and put in the micro for 6 minutes.

We'll see how it tastes. I have hamburger on standby if I need to add substance. I'm thinking 3 cups is a bit much.

The broth is ok. 3 cups is too much. Leftover rice would be good to add at this point, but I don't have any leftovers, so the hamburger will have to do.
I would try cheese, cause it melts in boiling water thickening the broth, but I'm also outa that.

I'll be eating this to see how it works. The rice cooker did just fine, and lasted for the two hours in the instructions. report after dinner.

Well, I ate it. It was OK. I ended up drinking much of the broth so it would make a good thick soup.
I suggest a cup to a cup and a half. and only a half pound of hamburger.

Still I'm tempted to go all grand next time with 3 cups broth, rice and diced ham. Just fill that baby up with as much as I can toss in.

so this made for one meal. at 89 cents, this is probably the most nutritious I can get at that price.
Still, it needs some serious additions to make up for the bland taste of the 4 kinds of beans.

Remove the meat and half the beans, and puree the other half of beans with the broth.  Add the meat and beans back and you'll have soup.

I have a really good recipe for black bean soup.  It's great with yellow rice.

I don't have a blender. Is it worth the purchase for a bachelor?

Use a potato masher and a large pot.
