TEL AVIV – Residents of a battered Israeli town protested in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv today, calling for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign due to his government's failure to halt constant rocket barrages from the Gaza Strip, bombardments that are destroying life in nearby Jewish communities.

Palestinians in Gaza reportedly fired 153 rockets over the last seven days, many aimed at Sderot, an Israeli town of nearly 26,000 residents located about three miles from the Gaza Strip. On Sunday, two brothers, ages 8 and 19, were seriously wounded when a Palestinian Qassam rocket exploded there. The eight-year-old, Osher Twito, lost a leg.

Palestinians have fired thousands of rockets from Gaza following Israel's evacuation of the territory in August 2005.

"We will keep firing until all of Sderot becomes a ghost town and then on to Ashkelon," Muhammad Abdel-Al, spokesman and a senior leader of the Gaza-based Popular Resistance Committees terrorist group, told WND.

The port city of Ashkelon, about five miles from Gaza, is home to strategic Israeli fuel facilities and electrical plants that power most of the Gaza Strip and much of southern Israel. It has been targeted numerous times by Palestinian rockets in recent weeks.

"I tell the Zionists in Sderot to run because we will not stop," Abdel-Al said.

Senior Israel Defense Forces officials petitioned Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to approve a large-scale ground assault in Gaza, stating only a massive ground operation and the temporary reoccupation of some parcels of the Strip would halt the rocket fire.

Instead, according to defense officials, Olmert only approved stepped-up airstrikes against terrorist leaders involved in the rocket fire and the surgical targeting of rocket crews and explosive facilities.

Yesterday, the Israel Air Force killed a Hamas terrorist in Gaza and carried out at least three missile attacks, one reportedly targeting an empty arms storage facility.
