Well, I decided to go with the pricey rubber treads but I don't yet have the money I need to buy them.

Well, but it's best to put them down when you got the doors and windows all open to provide ventilation anyway.

Like in spring, summer, or autumn.

Well, having the stairs bare does keep the cats off them.

I never paid attention to those rubber, or plastic, things on stairs.

Are they something that's glued down, or nailed down?

I honestly don't know.

I believe the rubber is adhered with specialized glue. Okay, that just sounds wrong.

But that's just on concrete stairs, and yours are that wood product, right?

I've been mulling over precisely this issue for a couple of months now. Didn't know whether to sand down and restain the stairs, slap a few coats of polyurethane on 'em, carpet them, or what.

The answer is to sand down, restain, polyurethane, then put on/glue those rubber step thingies on each step.
