Title: Who would you rather have? Romney or Huckabee?
Post by: Mustang on October 18, 2009, 08:00:54 PM
Well I know that Romney is gonna push for 2012, I have no idea about Huckabee.

Just out of curiousity, who would you rather have as the GOP candidate in 2012?
Romney, Huckabee, or neither?

I'll go with Romney, I think he is a solid conservative, although his healthcare debacle in Mass. was crap. For the most part he governed from the right and made good use of his veto pen, and I like his business credentials.

I like Huckabee, don't like his Fair tax position. Love his show. His stance on immigration is crap, that's why Geraldo Rivera loves him.

Then there's Tim Pillenty, don't know much about him.

Bobby Jindal, solid conservative, he won't run though--he's still young (30's?) and wants to add a few more years of experience under his belt.

My dream ticket would be Rove/Limbaugh, but that'll never happen so I have to settle for what's out there.

I think it would be hilarious to see Joe Wilson run against Obama, lol.

Palin won't run, otherwise she would have stayed as governor. I think she is more concerned with her book.

So, I'll take Romney for sure.

Huckabee.  I think he's a bit lighter on foreign policy then I would like, but he's a good person who I shares many convictions that I do, and I don't doubt his sincerity in sticking to them.

Huckabee.  I think he's a bit lighter on foreign policy then I would like, but he's a good person who I shares many convictions that I do, and I don't doubt his sincerity in sticking to them.

He refused to endorse Chris Christie for governnor (NJ) and Kim Gidano (Lt. Governor), because "they weren't conservative enough".
Kim Gidano is a Sheriff who is tough on illegal immigration with an impecible record, but is pro-choice.
And Chris Christie is conservative all the way, he didn't even bother to ask Kim on her position on abortion. And she doesn't have any power to do anything about it anyway.

I like Huckabee a lot, but he is far too soft on illegal immigration. I'll take a candidate who is tough on immigration over a pro-lifer.
I am pro-life myself, but it isn't my top priority issue. Nothing is gonna be done about it until Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Huckabee? He looks like Cooter from the Duke's of Hazard and his name is just as bad.

Don't know much about Tim which to me implies he's pretty solid otherwise the media would be all over him.

Bobby's not ready just yet.

Palin is more worried about her family then a book - but way to pile-on I guess Katie and Gibson didn't enough damage.

I'd vote for Romney without reservation. Though he brings some baggage.

Ditto.

I dunno, he's pretty hawkish. He opposes a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. So do I. Let the Jews have some land for Christ's sake. Islam sucks.

I had to hold my nose to vote for Romney in the primary and felt ill afterward, but Huckabee's willingness to embrace the limelight with his TV show makes me think he's more of a simple anti-DC populist than a conservative.  I would give Romney a slight preference to Huckabee, but given either choice in a general election I wouldn't feel any worse casting my ballot than the choice the GOP has given us since 1988.

I think Romney would make a great president.
I know Romney is running for 2012 for sure, so he has my vote unless someone I like more pops up.
It pretty much depends on Obama's approval rating 3 years from now. If Obama's approval rating is low, there will be blood in the water and everyone is gonna want a piece. If his approval is high, there will be less known candidates going for it.
Let's pray for lots of blood in the water.

Neither....They're both SOSDD

What is SOSDD?

And that was the candidate the Republican party ran in 1996 with Bob Dole.  I liked Mr. Dole but he ran a lousy, weak campaign.  Spent more time apologizing for his own side just like McCain did.  Anybody But Clinton didn't work that year, just like Anybody But Bush didn't work for Kerry.

I like Romney.  I just don't think he's the man to beat the Cult of Obama in a general election.  Unfortunately, he may be the cards we're dealt, but that's life.

I see your point. But Romney is handsome which may garnish the female vote, he has an excellent speaking voice, pretty good debater, a genius debater compared to Obama. And he is not too old, I think he is 60, but he looks like he is in his late 40's. I think he is charismatic enough to win and will most likely run a good campaign. Bob Dole and McCain were dinosaurs, of course they were gonna lose. As shallow as people can be, a lot of people vote on looks and charisma. And Romney has that + executive experience. Reagan was a dinosaur, but at least he was very charismatic and looked good for his age.

No thanks, I don't want to pay $3.50 for a soda or $40 for a hammer. Maybe on a single guy living by himself it would be cheaper than what we have now. But it basically punishes families, as families consume a lot of things.

I'd vote Libertarian first.

I'm not with the libertarian bandwagon. I'm conservative on social issues which is why I don't see eye to eye with libertarians.
I am pro-life, I think marijuana should be illegal, I believe marriage is between one man and one woman and should stay that way, and the fact that we have freedom of religion--not freedom from religion.

The topic of who will run against Obama in 2012 actually interests me a lot. I think that the Republicans will certainly gain a few seats in Both the House and Senate as it does seem that many people voted against Republicans in 2006 and 2008, but not really "For" anyone, which could slim the democratic majority or perhaps even turn it over to the Republicans with the congressional elections in 2010 and 2012 it is very feesible, especially if things don't get a lot better, a lot sooner. I have actually been watching a great deal of FOX news recently as I wanted to see what fascinated you guys so much and some of what they are saying does make sense, the more I think about it I think Obama may actually hate white America, it makes sense given his upringing and the Black Liberation Church he belonged to. I think Republicans need something different though to spice things up, like a Black Woman to run for president, it would have to be someone moderate-right, an interesting choice would be Condolezza Rice, however she has no interest in the position but I really do admire her. I think a more willing individual would be Lolita Jackson, look her up, she may interest some of you all and I would certainly vote for her reguardless of her registered party, but she is a republican.

I admire conservative minorities. They "get it" and are not loyal exclusively to their own race and do not see themselves as victims.
I've met a lot of African immigrants living in New Jersey, they are the most warm, friendly, and patriotic people you will ever meet--they love America. African Americans tend to not like Africans because they are not down for the "struggle" and reject the socialist black liberation theology of the African American community and church. You can see that there is a huge cultural difference between the African American community and Africans. The hispanic community world view is very ethno-centric, and will only support candidates that kiss their ass--and they will stamp any candidate that's tough on immigration to be a racist enemy of the hispanic community. The exception to this is Cubans. Cubans are overwhelmingly Republican because they come to this country to escape Communism, so they see through the liberal agenda.

I can't remember her name, but she is a very attractive conservative black woman who is a fox news contributor. I would vote for her in a heartbeat. The last time I saw her, she made Marc Lamont Hill look like a total idiot on O'Reilly, it was hilarious.

Do you understand how the Fairtax works?  Do you know what behavior it does punish?  Illegal behavior.  Currently, if you make you living illegally, you pay no taxes, as you don't report your income.  Under the Fairtax, who cares where the money comes from, you spend it on new items, you pay the tax.  It also punishes illegal immigration.  It encourages economic growth because corporate tax rates go to 0%, which will also cause prices for consumer goods to drop, as producers will not need to pass the bill for their taxes on to consumers in the form of higher prices.

Educate yourself before you buy into the line that "everything will cost more" that the NYT peddles.  Hell, all you have to do is listen to Neal Boortz, he literally wrote the book on the Fairtax.

It's "good party soldiers" like you that keep ideas like the Fairtax, ideas which put power in the people's hands, from being accepted.

You claimed that I didn't know how the fair tax system works, yet you seem to be alright with the idea of high costs of everything and you failed to explain how the fairtax would not punish families. Your argument is a little illogical, corporate taxes goes to 0%? Does that even matter if that corporation ends up paying 30% more for toilet paper and every little thing they need to run their business, did that even factor into your brain?
It punishes illegals? Yeah, but it punishes families even more. Basically, the more children you have, the higher the taxes you are paying because your family is consuming a lot. Those federally taxed diapers gonna add up.

Are you trying to suggest I am ignorant and RINO because I don't support the "Fair tax"? Structure our entire economy on a huge federal sales tax? Have you ever lived in New York city? I did, for 6 months, try paying 10% sales tax on everything you buy and see how happy you are.
If there was a fair tax, were talking about sales tax + federal sales tax, that's not conservatively cunning, it's just plain silly.

Also, a fair tax system would make the U.S. government strictly dependent on the success of a retail based economy, and it may hurt the retail sector.

go to fairtax.org (http://www.fairtax.org) and read the list of hundreds of economists who have endorsed it.

What does the income tax do?  it taxes people on how much they say they make, increasing in rate of taxation (think govt confiscation) as the income goes up.  IOW, it punishes success and hard work.

What does corporate taxes do?  adds more overhead onto the cost of doing business.  In a free market, what happens when you can produce an item for less money per unit?  If you are in a competitive market, you lower prices to get more customers.  Many manufacturers and retailers have stated that without the "embedded taxes" they collect through higher prices for their products, they would lower prices to get a competitive edge.

IF you are truly a conservative and wish to return the country to what the founder's originally envisioned, you would see that allowing Congress (either party) to dictate behavior through taxation is a usurpation of power.  What happens if you do something they don't like?  they tax the hell out of it (i.e. bonuses to, IIRC, Goldman Sachs execs, which were legal until the outcry started).

Romney just can't get it out of his head. His father failed to even win the GOP nomination for Prez in 1968, so now Mitt thinks he has some "unfinished business" to attend to.

I saw Romney take credit for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. There was nothing wrong with the organization, even with two of the principals having problems because they did what other organizers did - present gifts and other things to the Olympic Committee for their vote.

His image of riding to the rescue for those Olympics is completely false.

In short, Romney is an asshat. He's a pretty asshat, but he's still an asshat.  :bird:

Post by: Doc on October 19, 2009, 12:41:34 PM
I will have to go with the "neither" group........Romney is of questionable ideology......although he talks like a conservative, there is no such thing as a conservative in Massachusetts, therefore I suggest that he gives lip-service to his claim to conservatism........he is far too "slick" for me, and there is his health care initiative when he was governor.  He will claim that he was required to take that action due to his liberal constituency in MA, but I just don't buy it.......I think he is a younger version of John McCain politically.

Huckabee is a Baptist minister......as a Baptist myself, this, in a way, is a good thing, but there are many conservatives who are not evangelicals that will be turned off by that.....he brings the whole "church and state" issue along as baggage to a lot of people that would otherwise vote for a solid conservative candidate.  Not to mention the fact that he sometimes comes across as a backwoods bumpkin......I'm sure that is part of his act, but it is disturbing to many who wish to see a strong experienced decision-maker in the white house.......we've had a sax player from Hope AR, we don't need a guitar player from the same town as POTUS.

As for who I really like......I'm still waiting.......I thought Palin would have a good shot if she made it into the VP slot, but there is something about her that bothers me.....I can't really put my finger on it, but I believe that she lacks "depth" as a leader.....she is certainly good on the stump, but I have some reservations about her underlying leadership abilities at this time.....were she to win a Senate seat, or gain additional national political experience where I could examine her record on critical issues, I would vote for her in a heartbeat, but I'm not willing to go out on a limb based on what she says in a campaign speech.......that sort of thinking is what got us Obama......

I really like Bobby Jindahl from Louisania, but when I look at him in the cold light of day, he lacks the charisma that it would take to go all the way, and I think that the press would exploit that, and make him look foolish regardless of his capabilities.

I guess that I'm waiting for a "dark horse" to emerge much like GWB did in the 2000 race........before 1998, nobody ever heard of Bush the younger, and he stormed on the scene due to the behind the scenes machinations within the party.

If I had to make a call right now, I suspect that Romney will get the nomination, and unless things are very bad in 2011........he will lose, just like Bob Dole.......

Personally I would prefer that neither are candidates, there has to be a real conservative emerge.  Recall that in 2004 BO was at best a long shot and not even visible.

Hopefully we will have a true conservative come to the forefront and rally the troops.  I do not see either of the folks you mentioned leading the party in the right direction.

About 80% of what Ron Paul says makes sense. It's that other 20% of "conspiracies all around us" that makes him a magnet for some loony people.

It will have to be someone who can counter Obama's cult-of-personality.  Neither

Obama's cultish hold over middle America was shattered the day he won the Nobel Peace Prize. It made a glaring, flaring fact that it really was a cult based on fantasy.

Mustang says..."But Romney is handsome which may garnish the female vote,"

That's insulting to women...particularly conservative women. We are intelligent enough to realize that a pretty face is not what "cuts it"...it's the intelligence, moral character and beliefs, and personality behind the face.

 :yeahthat:

Also, I like neither of them.  I would hope someone emerges in 2011 that would make it a no-brainer.  BUT, if I absolutely HAD to choose between these two, it would be Huckabee.  Romney seems disingenuous to me, and although he may be considered to some as "attractive".....he's more of a snake oil salesman to me.

But the moonbats don't see it that way.  They still make excuses for everything he hasn't done, and ignore what he's really doing.

Whoever runs needs to have to the balls to call him on his bullshit policies publicly.  And when he/she does, the rest of the Republicans need to stand up too, instead of waiting to see how the dust settles.

Actually what they really need to have the strength to do...is withstand the blistering attack by the 5th column that will come to Obama's aid...the media.

Whoever dares to speak the truth about Obama in 2012 will see a media attack launched against them that will make what they did to Limbaugh looks amateurish by comparison.

Well I don't know her, so I don't know if she's a liberal.
But I can't take Ron Paul seriously either. I consider him to be a liberal who happens to be fiscally conservative.

I can't take R. Paul seriously when he thinks that the war on terror is a farce and his anti-Israel stance is borderline anti-semetic.
His idea that if we hide behind our borders and cut our ties with world is the way to national security is lunacy.

I think we should kick the U.N. out of New York and withdraw our membership and funds, but breaking ties with our closest allies--
Israel, Japan, UK, Turkey, Germany, Australia, etc. is ridiculous.

You think that if he was elected president (would never happen) , he would not pull our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, cut support to Israel and our allies, and dismantle our military and air bases around the world? That's not liberal?

Yeah the guy is pro-life and is a fanatic fiscal conservative, but he takes it to the extreme to the point that we would never send aid to foreign or domestic situations. And other than his pro-life stance, he is a liberal on social issues.

Hi,

Oh really, go back on my meds.....  Guess you did not see the poll that scrolled on Fox.  As I recall his name was on it.  He is screaming for an audit of the fed and a few other popular issues.  I am not necessarily a Paul fan but his name may still be in the mix.

Personally I would love to see someone who is not a career politician in the mix also.  I notice the media made a big deal out of Tommy Franks prostate surgery, I think the libs are more concerned about him or one of the other popular military folks running.

Romney strikes me as a bit of a RINO.  I think he would have done better than McLame did in 2008.  I simply cannot get excited about anyone currently in the mix.  I certainly hope someone comes along before too long.  I fear that the current idiot's popularity will turn around, in large part thanks to the slobbering media, and that he will have four more in years in 2012.  I hope not, but I see no real challenger to him.  Hopefully the idiot continues to alienate Americans and the Repubs find someone that hits a stride with the majority of Americans.

On the topic of Ron Paul, I can align myself with a lot of his positions but he is too far out there on others to make him plausible.  The media would have a field day with him.  What I fear is another rehash of 1992 where a third party candidate comes along and steals votes from the Republicans.  A Ron Paul, running as a Libertarian could take enough votes from a Republican candidate.  Believe it or not, there are still lots of Ron Paul signs out in Montana where I live.  He is wildly popular and most people see him as a brilliant.

In a nation of over 300 million people, there has to be someone out there that can take down Obama. 2012 is an eternity in politics. Anything can happen between now and then. What I hope for is a candidate who is the polar opposite of Obama and not on the radar.
We may or may not get a super conservative. Unless we are living in an early primary state, we have no power over it.
Is Mitt Romney a RINO? Hell no. Does he have a couple political mistakes on his record, that he recognizes? yes .
But if properly advised, reorganized, and administrated, I can see Mitt Romney running a powerful campaign and become a pretty damn good President.

What is nice about Romney is that he can probably carry many blue state, like for example... Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. He is charismatic, intelligent and a good speaker. He is also a Northern Republican. He is probably more moderate than most republicans would like but he does have the potential to beat Obama, if white people get fed up enough and republicans can run a solid grassroots campaign backing Romney I think he really does have a chance, especially if he were to pick a minority for Vice President. Now I do know that you have to be a natural born citizen to run for president, but can you have an immigrant as your vice president, obviously he or she wouldn't be able to take office should something happen to the president, I was think Arnold with Romney the electoral votes from California and Massachusetts alone could possible give them the ability to win. Maybe even Maria Shriever as VP, she is a Kennedy, Mass loves them, she is widely popular in California, she just doesn't have the political background, anyone know anything about her as far as foreign affairs?

Just a couple of questions -

Do you mean to imply that only white people vote republican or that non-white people will automatically vote for Obama (or any other democrat candidate ) ?

Do you think that republicans will care that the VP is a "minority" over and above any other qualifications (or lack thereof as the case may be) that they possess ?

Title: Re: Who would you rather have? Romney or Huckabee?
Post by: atruevoice on October 21, 2009, 03:51:48 AM
I'm not implying that only white people are republicans, but the vast majority of minorities, especially african americans do tend to vote for the democratic candidate. Since only a fraction of the population actually votes if you get enough of any group to notice that they are being opressed and get them out to vote it could sway an election, white people are being opressed now, its as if we still feel guilty for what a few rich plantation owners did well over 100 years ago, despite the fact that most caucasian americans are decendants of european immigrants after the turn of the century. I think the qualifications are important but apparently people didn't care that Obama was unqualified, I think the best way to beat him though would be to find someone who is qualified but is also a minority to take the edge off of the "Black President". What I find odd about our "First Black President" is that in fact he really doesn't come close to the mainstream African American and he is in fact not a decendant of slaves and was raised by white people, he used his race to win.

Hence, my comment that he is a bit of a RINO.

I totally agree with Rebel that this nation is too dumb to elect a true leader.  The reason is that the fearmongers in the media crucify sane candidates before they have a chance.  As an example look at what they did to Palin.  Had they applied half the pressure they did to Palin to Obama, we might have had a different outcome.  Obama could have pissed his pants and the media would have covered for him.  On the other hand had Palin failed to wash her hands after going to the bathroom it would have garnered 24/7 coverage.  Unfortunately most voters fail to consider the outcome of their choices and vote for free handouts.

Yeah back on the Meds now..........and I give a rats ass what some poll says.

Hi,

At the risk of the moderator telling me to go back on my meds......kinda like the libs, if you don't like the message attack the messenger don't ya think?  I could deal with the discussion of Paul from a factual perspective, I was not a supporter of his; but rather have seen him taking on the fed and other popular issues as of late.  Lets save the smart-ass putdowns for the liberals, we do not have to be like them.

I took the quiz on one of the websites where they asked several questions, then, based on how you responded told you the candidates who came closest to representing your values.  Paul was on the bottom, Romney was at the top of the list.  McCain was down holding hands with Paul as I recall.

Since that time, every time I see Romney on TV he is talking about his health care success in MA, which I understand is anything but a success.  Personally I want a candidate that wants to get the government the hell out of the health care, banking, car and railroad business just for starters.

To me Romney is appearing to be a consensus builder.  Screw that.  Give me another Reagan.  He was charming, told congress what needed to be done, then went on TV and told the public to contact your congressman and get them off their ass and get it done.  It is amazing what he did with a democrat congress, getting tax cuts passed etc.  Bush could not even get a permanent tax cut passed, nor a permanent exclusion of the death tax, that is how persuasive he was.

I agree with whoever said 2012 is a long way down the road.  I really hope someone from OUTSIDE the establishment emerges that follows the Reagan model.  He/she then gives clear instructions to congress and prods the public to get congress into action.

regards,
5412

That isn't what makes him crazy. He is a whack job because of all of the whacked out conspiracies he thinks fantasizes about.

Why is African Americans in lower case?

But that's not what you originally stated...

Tell me about the whacked out conspiracies, please.

Why anyone would want Romney, a RINO, is beyond my comprehension, unless those folks that would are RINOs, too. Huckabee, at least, is a real Conservative, but he is far to leftist for me. I want a REAL, God-Fearing, Constitution abiding candidate. The ones I've seen in the past apparently aren't viable enough to appease the moderates and the leftists.

What, conservative candidate?  Thompson was one in the 2008 GOP primaries.  So was Duncan Hunter.
