FORT WORTH, Texas | Representatives of the United Methodist Church turned back attempts to liberalize its policy on homosexuality Wednesday.
Almost 1,000 delegates to the church?s General Conference rejected a proposal from a legislative committee, leaving in place the position that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.
The General Conference, which meets every four years, is the only assembly that can set policy for the 7.9 million-member church. It includes delegates from all 50 states and 66 overseas regional jurisdictions.
The question of the status of gays was likely the most contentious one delegates will deal with in the 10-day conference, which concludes Friday. The result of Wednesday's debate was similar to votes in the past several General Conferences.
By 55 to 45 percent, the delegates adopted a minority report which is essentially the same as the church?s current policy. It states, ?The United Methodist Church does not condone the practice of homosexuality and consider (sic) this practice incompatible with Christian teaching.
It also affirms that sexual relations should take place ?only within the covenant of monogamous, heterosexual marriage.

Normal decent people are getting tired of pretending to accept the radical homosexual agenda. I see modest backlashes in the news. I said a long time ago that the radical homosexuals had overplayed their hand.
Of course, we will have to hear about the hand wringing and wails of every Tom, Harry, and Dick about this religious injustice perpetrated upon the Fruity Pebbles Brigade.

You know, this is something to which I'm looking forward with Great Anticipation and Excitement.
For decades, the United Methodist Church has been one of the most liberal establishments.
For decades, the United Methodist Church, while losing adherents in the western world, has slowly gained adherents in the third world, most notably western Africa.
At the last big international meeting of the United Methodist Church, last summer I think it was, delegates from western Africa were 40% of the whole church; the next time they have another one of those meetings, the western Africans will be the majority of United Methodists.
Western African Methodists don't want any of these things European-derived decadent affluent white Methodists want.
When they're in the majority, bye-bye to this "world peace" and "peaceful coexistence" and "gay rights" and possibly even women ministers and all this other stuff.
It's going to be great fun to watch.

Frank, I too, am surprised at this, as I thought the Methodists have been moving to the left for a while.....
We too, in our congregation, are in the throes of a "split" with the national church organization. Our little country church has been affiliated with the "Disciples of Christ", who at the national level have recently endorsed gay rights (and gay clergy), called for increased taxes, and issued an official proclamation condemning the president for the war in Iraq, to name a few. Not to mention the liberties that they take on interpretation of the gospels. Our pastor recently resigned due to the fact that he could no longer support the national organization's position on ecumenical issues, stating that he would return if the congregation ended the affiliation with DoC, which has not happened so far........bottom line is that about 60% of the congregation has left (ourselves included).......it is truly sad.
As a footnote Gene Robinson, the openly gay Bishop discussed in another thread, .......began his career as a clergyman in the "Disciples of Christ".........
Liberalism seems to have a corrosive effect on any organization that it enters.....like a cancer....
Kudos to the Methodists....

I just got off the phone with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He is asking me to hi-five the Methodists.

We didn't need any kinky illustrations either. Is that Ahmadinejad or TNO with the stick?

Ama-gonna-jihad has the stick. TNO likes getting whipped...that's why he stays around here.

Around here that is referred to as "out of his depth in a parking lot puddle".

Funny you should say that, I was sitting here trying to remember the last time Methodists hung homosexuals in front of a cheering crowd.

I don't remember hearing anything about it in my confirmation classes.

I know one of the delegates, he was the pastor of my church in IL.
This comes up every four years at the conference. A few years back they had to vote against a lesbian pastor.
The homos keep pushing the agenda, but they are not getting very far within the walls of the UMC. I have seen many churches that have given into the fags...and the next thing you know, they had to have homo only adult sunday schools and "single mingles".....

Methodist is often seen as being liberal. However, they are good at dumping liberal branches of them.

Some of the views are more liberal when it comes to "traditions" in the church. But remember, churches have to stay out of politics. :o

Too bad poliitics isn't required to stay out of churches.

Isn't this like the courts forcing PETA to allow the admittance of a hunting, meat-eating, omnivore as a member. Is it not?
