"I was born a poor Black child" got me the job.

Today marks the first full week of my new job. Yeah it is for a major defense contractor and it's temporary, but it is 25 bucks an hour better than no job.

At the second interview, the guy who would be my immediate supervisor started by saying "so, tell me a little bit about yourself." I--at that point pretty sure this was a practice interview decided to have fun--replied "Well, I was born a poor Black child..." Chuckles all around and then into serious tech stuff discussion.

Yesterday while going to lunch with two of the people who were on the hiring panel I was asked "do you know why we picked you?"

"Because of my expertly crafted resume and superior technical skills?" I replied.

"No, of course not.'I was born a poor Black child.' As soon as you said that, the decision was made. Everyone else we interviewed was so uptight and all-business; we didn't really want somebody like that."

The the second guy added, "and you look like Doc Brown."

(For anyone who doesn't know "I was born a poor Black child" is a line from "The Jerk" with Steve Martin. Doc Brown is Christopher Lloyd's character from "Back to the Future".)

Not sure if this DUmmie is being funny or telling a bouncy?

Stranger things have certainly happened in interviews and interview outcomes, many times they do turn on making an unpredictable personal connection, given a field of roughly equal candidates.  It could be true, really; and no conversion story or cops in the bushes.  I'd have to put this one in the 'Plausible' column.

Bouncy.

Since I work for a "major defense contractor", he might have gotten by the low level tech interview with that remark, but management would have BLACK listed him right away for it.

"Major defense contractors" have become so stupidly politically correct, it's almost no fun to work for them anymore.

I dunno, BC, at $25 an hour, this guy's hiring decision was made at about the level of the manager in Office Space.  Of course he probably is completely bullshitting, or mistaken, in calling them a 'Major defense contractor' in the first place.

So you're saying it's more likely $7.25 an hour down at White Castle?

Bouncy. The guy's bragging about having another dead end temp gig, which makes him upper middle class at the DUmp. The pay rate, the "major defense contractor", and the interview details are all bouncy embellishments to get attention.

Sounds like it's the tech corporate equivalent of stoker on a steamship.  He could however make a lot more money as a factory-trained auto mechanic; bad career choice early on, I guess, but of course who would want a DUmmie working on his car?

Yep. 25 an hour is just to make the other cretins salivate with jealousy.

Exactly! I have hired and fired at least a hundred guys. If one of them made that remark, he'd be in the dust bin, not on my crew!!!!!!!!1111

He admits working for "a major defense contractor?"

That's like #3 on the DU condemnation list, just behind Wal Mart and the Salvation Army.
