Medical tourism is still pretty big.  Panama and Costa Rica seem to have taken most of the business that Mexico used to receive in that regards.  Thailand is another big destination, with advanced treatments unavailable in the USA.

Las Vegas was pushing medical tourism for the past couple years. We do get a lot of seasonal residents from Canada that need medical procedures done during the winter months. They are also marketing to other nations overseas.

That is interesting about Thailand, Panama and Costa Rica.

I just grasp how everyone who travels overseas for "advanced treatments" seems to very quickly expire.

That's a very limited and flawed view.  Certainly we have in America the capability for what's generally considered the best medical care in the world.  However due to FDA regulations, certain prescription medications which are proven to successfully work elsewhere are not available.  Additionally, due to legislative regulations and other self-imposed regulations by the medical industry certain treatment options such as stem-cell treatment are not available to be offered here.

It really is amazing how the medical tourism industry has taken off!  It makes sense in a lot of ways.  I've spoken before about my uncle, but when he went to Thailand for treatment the hospital was essentially a gigantic luxury hospital and recovery spa-hotel only serving very well off foreigners.  The treatments there extended his life for nearly a decade with a remarkable quality of life improvement.  All that after the specialists at the best hospitals here; Mayo, John Hopkins, etc all said he was on his way out as there was nothing else they could do.

Really?

Is the Mayo Clinic offering some kind of bait and switch when they talk about their stem cell program?

How about Johns Hopkins?

Maybe UCLA?

University of Nebraska Medical Center?

How about the new Stem Cell Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center?

It's a scam, I tell ya!

That's great to hear they've started investigating stem-cell treatment now.  Again, he went to several of those hospitals, and ten years ago they weren't.   :whatever:  :whatever:  :whatever:

gNads, the international manatee of mystery, has a shoebox full of passports:

The foreign quack clinics remind me of the disclaimer at the end of tacky TV infomercials: "Not sold in any store!"

In the Philippines they have "psychic surgeons" who remove tumors without using a scalpel.

Predictably, the FDA refuses to recognize their science.

There's certainly quack clinics, both over seas and here in the states as well.  Although through regulation we're certainly protected from some of the extremist quackery.

I do not believe the FDA doesn't regulate surgical techniques.  While having quite the plethora of areas under the public health umbrella to oversee; they're primarily in charge of food safety, pharmaceutical drugs, tobacco, supplements, medical devices, etc.

Not but a few years ago, in the time frame I mentioned earlier, I'm sure you recall the backlash against stem-cell treatment in this country.  There were those without more than a cursory of knowledge, whom were stating that it's all based on dead babies and against God.  It's certainly nice to hear that America's medical community has finally been able to work around the legislation put up to block the practice/research.  Of course it's taken nearly a decade apparently.

Fetal stem cells have shown almost no promise. Adult stem cells have been the superstars.

Exactly - pretty much every advance in stem cell research has come from adult stem cells, not fetal.

I theorize that the fetal cells are designed to multiply like rabbits, then die out fairly quickly. -Whereas the adult variants are far more even tempered, and are less prone to go out in a blaze of reproductive glory.

Yes, what is it that nads says, needless to say ? Needless to say this has been a big disappointment for the pro abortion lobby.

Pardon my confusion, but what does that have to do with what you quoted of me?  Not trying to argue, just not sure.

Ah.  Yeah, it really was a shame at the time when so many seemed to have that mindset.  Especially in light of, as you affirmed, it was the adult stem cells which presented the applicable medical breakthroughs.

FWIW, ever since the beginning of the public stem cell debate some folkes have always been able to differentiate between fetal and adult stem cells.

So I guess I am confused about this "mindset" that you speak of.

Agreed, there certainly were some.  However there was also some with very vocal opposition to any stem cell treatment, which were whom I was referencing.

I feel as though this thread has been hi-jacked so I'll bow out of this discussion. If you wish to continue this discussion I'd be happy to join you in a different thread.
