Iraqi Parliament passes landmark bills

Iraq deputies pass landmark bills
Iraqi MPs have made an breakthrough in parliament by passing three important laws after weeks of delays and brinkmanship between rival factions.

The legislation sets a budget, provides for a limited amnesty for detainees, and defines the relationship between Baghdad and local authorities.

The third law is necessary before provincial elections can be held.

The move comes a day after the assembly was adjourned amid acrimony and calls for its dissolution.

Speaker Mahmoud Mashhadani had complained that distrust was paralysing the chamber.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says that, by bundling up the bills and passing them together, the vote has satisfied all three main groups: the Kurds who wanted the budget, the Sunni Arabs who wanted the amnesty and the Shia Muslims who are keen to press ahead with provincial elections.

Passing the bills had been among 18 benchmarks set by Washington to foster political reconciliation. US ambassador Ryan Crocker called them each "very significant accomplishments".

The $48bn state budget financed mainly through oil revenues was meant to have been agreed before the end of last year.

The amnesty bill will benefit many of an estimated 25,000 detainees held in US and Iraqi prisons, if they have not been charged with or convicted of violent crimes.

A large proportion of detainees are thought to be suspected Sunni Arab insurgents who are held without being charged.

Story

this is going to knock gaping holes in the democrat's latest pack of lies about "some small military progress but no political progress is possible in iraq" regarding the war on terror.

Iraq is a failure.

the place could blow to hell tomorrow, and it still wouldn't be as horrible a failure as her last four facelifts.

Probably won't be on the cover of the NY TIMES, Wash. Post, LA Times, I'm thinking... :whatever:
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

Seriously, I am fascinated that the Democrats continue to call Iraq a failure, mistake, Bush's war bla bla bla. Support the troops but not the war? I don't think so. Have they made a political calculation that the kook fringe vote is more importants than the military vote? Theres no way to accurately calculate the kook vote, but the military? Millions have now served in Iraq or Afghanistan - granted not all conservative leaning - who must certainly take offense at the way our fine men and women's accomplishments are besmirched by the Democrats.

Historically we have never elected an antiwar candidate while at war. I don't think we will this time. I've got plenty of issues with
John McAnesty, but at least he has it right on Iraq and our long war against Islmofascism.

Barack Almighty can give a hell of a speech, until he drifts into calling Iraq a mistake. That's a mistake Barry, think about the fallen and their families when you call it a mistake. Think about folks who have son's, daughters, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers serving right now, are they serving for a mistake?

What about the rapists political partner, the Shrew, hell she's had too many positions to keep track of. I think in her latest attempt to out kook Barack Almighy she said she'd have troops start withdrawing in 60 days.

God forbid the Democrats take the White House, but if they do, the angriest people in the country will be the antiwar left, their hair will catch fire when the Democrat president changes course and decides we can't leave Iraq quite so fast.
