Jupiter has lost one of its prominent stripes, leaving its southern half looking unusually blank. Scientists are not sure what triggered the disappearance of the band.
Jupiter's appearance is usually dominated by two dark bands in its atmosphere – one in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern hemisphere.
But recent images of Jupiter taken by amateur astronomers show that the southern band – called the south equatorial belt – has disappeared.
The band was present at the end of 2009, right before Jupiter moved too close to the sun in the sky to be observed from Earth. When the planet emerged from the sun's glare again in early April, its south equatorial belt was nowhere to be seen.

EVERYBODY PANIC!! :panic:
I'm surprised this is not the topic on Coast to Coast AM tonight. I think last night was ghosts, so tonight is probably Bigfoot. Again.

Probably related to global warming. ::)
-
The article did say that it has happened before, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out it is related somehow to solar activity.

Maybe next time Jupiter will think twice before showing up back for orbit, drunk, out of uniform and in need of STD shots from the dispensary, thirty-six hours after it's liberty pass expired. :-)

I am sure I had it here some place, can't be too far away. I was just borrowing it.

Check under the sofa cushions. I found a lost asteroid under mine a while back.

BREAKING: Authorities have just named a suspect.

No kiddin...that surface temperature must be all the way up to -230 F or so...

Wait... Jupiter has a surface?

Wait... Jupiter has a surface?
Watched a show about Jupiter the other night and there's some kind of surface, I think, but it's liquid. There's the cloud layers, then some "clear" air, and then pressurized gases in liquid form.

is there really an oxygen layer in the atmosphere?
-
This is actually good news. Jupiter was rich in stripes. I hope the stripe was redistributed to a planer looking planet like Neptune or Uranus.

I meant "clean" as in clear -- no clouds. This was discovered by an atmospheric probe that Galileo (I think) sent down. There is very little oxygen on Jupiter.

I was thinking of Saturn. I read that its atmosphere has different gases in layers going down.

I missed that show, so I don't know. I'm like Joey on "Friends" when he bought only the "V" volume of an encyclopedia set.

lol
I use to have a set from the 1950's. It was kind of interesting.

My mom still has a set that was from maybe the 60s or 70s. My parents bought it used (well used, unfortunately, as there was some water damage) in the 80s for me to use for school work.

these became water damaged too and began having a strong moldy smell that made me toss them.
