Oh my.

Grandma, who's burdened with a tightwad skinflint husband who's too cheap and too mean to buy her a chest freezer:

Is it fall yet?

The first fresh pumpkin pie of the soon-to-be season. We were only able to salvage three small pumpkins before the squash bugs annihilated every gourd and melon plant in the garden. The first one I used to make the pumpkin cranberry muffins a couple of weeks ago. This is what happened to the last two:

after which a photograph of a perfectly fine-looking homemade pumpkin pie

I managed to stick a pot holder in the surface getting it outta the oven.

1. oh, I thought the cat got at it!

That happened to me one Thanksgiving: Kitty jumped up and licked a hole in the custard. It makes sense, being so full of milk and eggs.

2. It's beginning to feel a little bit like fall might be on the way with cooler temps and dogwood trees starting to turn, but it was up to 90 deg. yesterday. The good news is that the early fall apples are starting to come in. I've gotten honey crisp and a new variety I had never tasted called jona prince, which I think is a variation of jonagold. I've already started my apple hoard for fall.

Your pie is divine and I had the strongest desire to lick the picture on my screen. You're torturing us!

My mother makes killer pumpkin pies.  I, myself, have been known to bake a killer apple pie--as well as killer cheesecakes.  All from scratch.  Lemme tell ya, it ain't easy doing a crust (for the apple pies) without a rolling pin.  (My wife then informed me where the rolling pin was.  Talk about embarassed . . . :o )

We may hit one of the local orchards for apples (Jonamac or Macintosh) soon.  With all of the wet weather that was all over the Northeast this year, the apple crop is expected to be huge.

Try peaches sometime....pour some of the juice over it all....soak the cake.

My wife would look at a rolling pin and think you hold on to the drum and poke something with the handles.   :p

I WISH I could make good crust for pies. Roll out dough is my downfall. :( But despite using pre-made crusts, I still do a damn fine apple pie! Have you ever used Stayman Winesap apples for a pie? They bring a real nice tartness to the pie.

Also, Paula Deen has a killer pumpkin cheesecake recipe that I made last Thanksgiving. I highly recommend it.

Not me.  I like just about any pie known to man, UNLESS it has coconut in it....  :(

If one doesn't have a rolling pin, you can improvise by taking an empty liquor bottle and filling it with very cold water.  It keeps the butter solid as the dough is being rollout out, for a flakier effect.

Because I think it's stupid to own a utensil that one uses only rarely, those very few times I've needed a rolling pin, I've used a baseball bat.
