Police: Drum soldier assaulted college student (possibly related to derogatory remarks about Obama)

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Police were investigating Monday whether derogatory remarks about President-elect Barack Obama triggered a weekend fight outside a pizza shop that left a college student hospitalized and a Fort Drum soldier in jail.

Oswego police charged 23-year-old Pvt. Kevin Flanagan with assault.

A fire support specialist with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, Flanagan got into an argument with Angel Moreno just after 3 a.m. Sunday outside the Pizza Pub in Oswego, police said. Flanagan then hit Moreno, leaving the Bronx man with a severe head injury. Police said it did not appear Flanagan used any weapons.

Police Capt. Michael Beckwith said police have heard reports the fight started over remarks about Obama, but that the incident was still under investigation. Friends told police that Moreno is an avid Obama supporter.

Moreno is a student at the State University of New York at Oswego. He was airlifted to University Hospital in Syracuse in critical condition but a hospital spokeswoman said his condition was upgraded to serious on Monday.

Really?  The way I read that story...the soldier hit the civilian because of a remark the civilian made about Dear Leader.

Shouldn't they be lauding him?

Moreno was part of a group that Flanagan got into an argument with inside the shop. An argument not about pizza, but politics.

One witness who was with Moreno told police, "The males began yelling about Obama and being derogatory toward him. We all said that he is our president now and he is our leader, so deal with it. Words were exchanged, but we got over it."

Things escalated when the two groups left the shop

A witness who was inside Pizza Pub told police, "I then saw a tall, skinny black male push Flanagan. I then headed outside. Just as I got outside, Flanagan swung one time and hit the kid in the face. The male then instantly fell down."

Court papers say Moreno hit his head against a truck before hitting the ground. Moreno was airlifted to University Hospital.

Don't think so, sounds like the college student was the Obamite.  However, it would seem most likely that the Soldier made some heretical crack about The One and the student initiated a fight and got the worst of it.  Can't say for sure based on the limited info, but that sounds like the most likely scenario.

He's lucky the fight didn't take place in Watertown. The cops there would have locked the troop up anyway. Ft. Drum isn't looked to kindly on by alot of the townies there mosyly because of crap started way back when by the New York National Guard spending thier time at Drum and them going into town and starting all kinds of shit with the town folk.

Things might have changed since I was there back in 88-89 but I am not certain tha tit changed that much after reading the story. At least this time the Soldier wasn't at fault and the college dweeb got his just rewards.
