More non-Spanish speaking migrants are crossing the borderThe crisis at the southern border is becoming a global one, officials sayBy Tanvi Misra and Camila DeChalusPosted October 4, 2019 at 6:00am-snip-But Customs and Border Protection said they’ve seen a recent rise in crossings by people from many nations, apprehending migrants from 50 countries, including India, China, Bangladesh, Egypt, Romania and Turkey.https://www.rollcall.com/2019/10/04/more-non-spanish-speaking-migrants-are-crossing-the-border/
For context, anywhere from 8,000 to as high as 20,000 immigrants have crossed through the gap in normal calendar years past. But the International Organization for Migration in April reported that 11,370 extra-continental migrants reached Panama between just January and April. May alone is going to come in at a minimum of 10,000, with the bulk of the year still to come, said Yon, who bases his estimate on flow rates into certain indigenous villages, interviews with Panamanian police, and non-government organizations that have arrived to help the migrants....A majority of the immigrants driving toward the U.S. southern border, where they will soon exploit management systems already staggering under an historic crush of illegally entering immigrants from Central America and Mexico, originally hail from Haiti, Cuba, and sub-Saharan Africa, Yon and Holton said.
A record 1.7 million migrants from around the world, many of them fleeing pandemic-ravaged countries, were encountered trying to enter the United States illegally in the last 12 months, capping a year of chaos at the southern border, which has emerged as one of the most formidable challenges for the Biden administration....The crossers hailed from around the globe, many of them seeking economic opportunity as the coronavirus pandemic erased hundreds of millions of jobs. Agents caught people from more than 160 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with Mexico accounting for the largest share.
How did they explain the hoard of Haitians that came thru Mexico into Texas recently?
