Man shoots grizzly bear sow that charged him near trail off Chena Hot Springs Road (Alaska)

https://www.yahoo.com/news/man-shoots-grizzly-bear-sow-134700654.html

Jul. 21—A man shot a grizzly bear sow Monday morning after it charged him and his son in a remote area off a trail near Chena Hot Springs Road northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska State Troopers said.

The injured bear had not been located by Tuesday afternoon.

The man and son happened upon the sow and cub around 11:12 a.m. while walking in a remote area near Smallwood Trail off Chena Hot Springs Road, troopers wrote in an online statement.

"Once the adult male and the sow made eye contact the bear charged," troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said.

Oh man ... you've really got to go see this one in the 'wild', so to speak.  Far too much goodness to bring over.

Enjoy!

Let me guess. They claim that urinating and vomiting on themselves would have stopped the attack?

No, they would have trapped the bear with chicken wire and cinder blocks, then set it on fire.

Surprising number of sane DUmmies in that thread who understand that the guy didn't shoot Yogi Bear just for fun.

There's got to be some way this is Trump's fault. 🤔

Yep, climate change is making the bears more aggressive to humans because of the lack of will to save the planet or something.

I wonder if it was a grizzly or a large black bear.  Black bears will frequently break off an attack when seriously injured,  Grizzly's are relentless especially when in protective mode.  An experienced Montana outdoors man told me that after a fatal gunshot to the heart you still have 15 to 20 seconds before the grizzly learns that he is dead.  Also "Black bears" come in every color from light brown to jet black, the distinction between black and grizzly is mainly in the shape of thr skull.

No, but apparently one of them thinks if you stay on the TRAIL then the bears won't come get you.  You have to go off trail and that's what caused the attack.

She's explained several times she's a very experienced backpacker so she knows how this works.  STAY ON THE TRAIL!!

What's REALLY funny is, one of the DUmmies actually tells a joke (and it's funny!) and the "STAY ON THE TRAIL" chick totally misses it!   :rotf:

10. Probably not making a sound and startling bear.

Could have been a bluff charge
Gawd forbid gun humper would carry bear spray.

16. It's very easy to avoid all types of bears, even Grizzlies. . .

In Montana, when I hiked there some years ago, there was sage advice posted at the trail head.

The sign warned that both Black Bears and Grizzlies were in the area and advised that the way to safeguard from attack was to wear small bells on your clothing, to alert the bears you were nearby, and to carry pepper spray to use if the bears got too close.

The sign said the best way to determine if there were bears nearby was to look for fresh scat along the trails. Black Bear scat, it said, has small berries and bits of fur mixed in, all part of the bear's diet. Grizzly scat was easier to identify as it's larger, smells like pepper spray, and has little bells sprinkled throughout.

That last one was a response to "we can do it" trying to point out she was missing the joke!

It's too funny.

Can we get DUmmies to take hiking trips to Alaska or the Sierras? :rotf: I'm sure the bears and mountain lions wouldn't mind that they taste a little "off" ... it's mainly mentally "off". :rotf:

The DUmmies would just foil your plan by staying on the marked trails.  :cheersmate:

They probably should do their hiking in clown suits to let the bears and mountain lions know they taste funny. :rimshot:  :bolt:

Every couple of years warnings are posted on the trail near my home of a mountain lion sighting. The trail follows a creek up into the lower Santa Cruz Mountains, so there's lots of places wildlife could do their thing. Because the relevant section allows walking from from Los Gatos to Campbell and passes by Los Gatos High School and through three parks it's a pretty heavily used trail.

Similarly, there are mountain lion encounters with runners and hikers in Sierra foothills, including a couple of killings.
