HOUSTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Gustav was no longer expected to reach Category 4 strength before hitting the U.S. Gulf Coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Sunday.

Gustav was expected to have top winds of 127 mph (204 kph), Category 3 strength on the five-stage Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, the hurricane center said in a report.

I've been hearing over the last 2 years that the levees aren't even built up enough to withstand a Cat 3.  Whatever makes it to land, things could still get ugly.

And these storms in the Gulf tend to weaken a bit right before reaching land. Sometimes dryer air from over land gets into the hurricane's rotational field and distrupts it. It's fairly likely that this will be a category 2 at most when it does.

Also, Katrina was much larger. It had hurricane force winds extending up to 125 miles from the eye.

I must have missed that one.  I usually get ridiculed (not here) for my desire to see worrying about New Orleans a thing of the past. 

The city may be old and steeped in lore and myth, but in the great scheme of things, we can get along fine without it.  Did you know Dallas has three or four suburbs which are larger/more populated than New Orleans?

The Mississippi River is going to shift eventually and that would render New Orleans useless, since it is largely a port city. That will not be for another few hundred years though. I don't know why the government is funding the rebuilding of New Orleans after Katrina? If people want to rebuild and live there, fine with me, not with our tax money. I have been to New Orleans, it's really dirty and smells bad from all the drunk people who urinated.
