(CNN) -- As horrified travelers watched, a Greyhound Canada bus passenger repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated a young man who was sitting and sleeping beside him, a witness said Thursday.

 "There was a bloodcurdling scream. I was just reading my book, and all of a sudden, I heard it," Garnet Caton, who was sitting in front of the two men, said of the Wednesday night incident west of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

"It was like something between a dog howling and a baby crying, I guess you could say," Caton said. "I don't think it will leave me for a while."

Passengers exited the bus, and a trucker who stopped provided wrenches and crowbars to several of them so they could keep the suspect on the bus until police came, witnesses told Canadian TV. After a standoff, police took the man into custody early Saturday.

The names of the victim and the suspect were not immediately released. Caton told The Associated Press the victim appeared to be about 19 years old and had gotten on the bus in Edmonton.

I think we can refer to such people as MONAS - men of no appearance whose ethnic origins never appear in any report or appeal for witnesses.  Also known as Mondeos - men of no discernible ethnic origin.  :-)

The attacker reportedly lunged at the three men, who managed to trap him inside the bus until authorities arrived.

"While we were watching the door, he calmly walks up to the front with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us," said Caton.

Fellow passenger Cody Olmstead told Brandon radio station CKLQ that the man "dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up."

and again, nobody was able to think fast enough to jump this guy as a group? i know a knife is probaby a scary as hell prospect, but they didnt even try and disarm him or stop the killing??

i just dont get it. has the state taken over so much that we dont even know what to do? or defend each other from attacks? if this had been a child, would they have just left them behind and escaped the bus??

I don't know, call me a coward but if I saw someone sawing off someone's head I'd have a hard time being brave! I imagine one goes into shock seeing something so evil as a beheading.

oh no doubt, but the beheading (according to the article) came later.. the people on the bus just ran down the aisle and left the victim to be killed.

i honestly have no idea what i'd do - but im thinking a concealed weapon would have helped a bit. granted, this is canada we're talking about..

i only skimmed the article but they seemed pretty careful not to identify him one way or another.

now if he'd been a teacher or conservative, we'd know that right away.

granted, this is still canada we're talking about..

I've looked at a few sources of this and that information isn't out there.

Far more likely in this case that it was one of the patients of Canada's wonderful "free" psychiatric facilities that just snapped.

IMHO...given how lawsuit happy people are these days...I feel sure that if the passengers had given this idiot the Richard Reid treatment some slimy ambulance chaser would have been there willing to make the perp rich by filing charges on his behalf agaist the other passengers that stopped him from beheading his seat mate.

I heard this on the radio at work. This is just one more reason why,among many, we should never ,ever let the liberals like Chuck U Schumer get anti gun laws passed. As has already been said a person or persons armed with a gun could have at least saved the taxpayers money on having to house this nutcase for however long he lives.

I've trained in the martial arts my whole life.  I am not going to willingly go after a man whose holding a big ****ing knife, in an enclosed area, while I'm unarmed. 

The rest of the people where smart.  If it had been a life or death (for everyone) situation like a plane hijacking, then yeah, no hesitation, but the deed was done, no one could save the guy at that point, and people had a means to get to safety, while ensuring that this guy didn't escape.  They did exactly what they had they should have done.
