A veteran firefighter refused to respond to last month's deadly shooting spree that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords wounded because he had different political views than his colleagues and "did not want to be part of it," according to internal city memos.

Mark Ekstrum's insubordination may have delayed his unit's response because firefighters had to stop at another station to pick up a replacement for him, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

While the crew was not among the first called to the supermarket where six people were killed and 13 others wounded, a memo from Ekstrum's supervisor said his actions caused "confusion and delay" during the emergency.

Ekstrum's team, which is specially trained to handle large medical emergencies, was dispatched to assist 90 minutes after the Jan. 8 shooting.

The 28-year veteran of the Tucson Fire Department retired two days later while his supervisors were still considering how to discipline him, according to the Star, which obtained the memos about the incident through a public records request.

Capt. Ben Williams wrote in a report that when Ekstrum first said he would not go on the call, "he mentioned something about 'political bantering' and he did not want to be part of it."

There were at least three threads about this, and in one of them the firefighter was quoted as saying that he voted for Giffords. Of course the DUmmies claimed that he was lying.

Good thing the guy's station was not a "first responder" since the Capt took the time to talk to him. 

Aren't police and firefighters supposed to respond to a distress call regardless of what the situation is?

If his refusal to respond was not because he didn't like Giffords, was it because he was afraid of getting hurt himself? It's supposed to be a good thing to have a certain amount of fear, as no fear can make a person reckless, but if a first-responder is too afraid to respond to a mass casualty situation, regardless of the casualty cause...they need to find a new line of work.

If that's the case....then it's a good thing he quickly resigned.

Unfortunately, they're all in Chicago, and the Wisconsin State Police have no authority there.

I was thinking about that. Couldn't a (most likely R) constituent of the run-away State Senators file a federal complaint against them for being denied the "honest services" of their representative? Would that not be an impeachable offense?

Put out a call. If you are not here, ready for a full days work at 9am then nothing short of your death or the death of an immediate family member works as an excuse. Failure to be here means you will have resigned your position as of 9:00:01.

Special elections to fill your vacated seats will be in 2 weeks and no one who has resigned will be eligible to run again, ever. All State pensions and perks will be canceled for resigned members and repayment of any and all monies paid out this legislative session will be returned.
