Title: Wheel of Time
Post by: Splashdown on November 03, 2009, 11:51:04 AM
Okay. There might be three people who have read all or part of this fantasy series.

I've been with this frustrating, brilliant, plodding, sucky, complicated, series since 1990. It's a committment now, I have to finish it.

Anyway...

The series author, Robert Jordan, died in 2007, leaving the series unfinished. Another writer, Brandon Sanderson, was hired to compile Jordan's notes and finish the series.

Book 12, The Gathering Storm, just came out, and it was amazing. There was a little strangeness because of the differences in style at times, but in general the pacing was better than previous books, and it looks like there will finally be a conclusion to this series.

Anybody else read the Wheel of Time series?

I read the first two ages ago, don't remember much of it. Is it worth trying again?

I like the George Martin "Ice and Fire" series, but I always have to refresh when he finally writes the next one. I hear HBO is making a movie of it, tho.  I really liked the new writer Scott Lynch's Locke Lamora set.

I have the Night Angel trilogy by Weeks, but I haven't started it yet. Hopefully it'll stick to assassins and leave out the love story crap. I hate it when they mess up a good story with mushy mush (like Goodkind).

I have the complete set, almost all are first edition hardbound. I knew that his family was going to have it "finished" but diden't know that any books had been published. I think I'm almost afraid to read another writers "flavor" of the series.
I know his family had sat down on many occassions and discussed the ending when it was obvious that 'Robert" would not be able to do so.

If they ever do a movie, the "Ways" will scare the crap out of people.

I started it in High School, but I don't think I ever read beyond the first book.  Maybe once it has been finished I'll try again  :p

Read and own a much worn set of all but the most recent book.

The man was a master wordsmith but did tend to waffle on a bit too much at times.

I'll pick up the latest installment sometime soon.

It's surprisingly good. Story arcs are finally closing.

I gave it up after the 7th or 8th book.  When I catch up to a series I get bored waiting on the next one and forget what happened then have to go back and read them again.
