How would you handle a lack of Job References?
So I'm FINALLY starting to look for work. Right now I'm looking at cashier and stocking jobs and the like. I've applied online at Walmart, Safeway and Futureshop (electronics retailer) and plan a few others. I have what I think is a very professional looking resume considering how little experience I have. It's served me in the past. There are a few gaps and holes in it but for the level of job I'm applying for there are no deal breakers or anything.

The trouble I have is a lack of references. I really have none. None of the jobs I applied for asked for any but come interview time they may. I know sometimes these "bottom of the barrel" type jobs don't even really care about references either, but I should have some anyway. When I worked in 7-11 sometimes all they cared about was getting a warm body on the till, lol. Thing is it's been some years since I last worked, been in school off and on since, and I've lost contact with most of the people I worked with before. I had an excellent manager at 7-11 4 years ago who thought very highly of me, I can probably still use him. I've called him a few times before asking for references, feels a little awkward only contacting him for help. Anyway that only makes one person.

What would you do in such a situation? Do people still use personal references? They seem kind of pointless.

References show a potential employer that you are socially acceptable. At least somebody, somewhere likes you.

What about the field you spent all of those years studing?

who was your contact for that.

They're special alright.

Needs to consult with an experienced resume writer.  Perhaps rsmithnumbers could be of assistance.
The DUmmie should drop him a note.

Lets see here.....there was that real fast security guard at WAL-MART that will attest to my speed.....and the little old lady I knocked to the ground with her to heavy purse can attest to my upper body strength ....and the friendly jailer down Georgia will attest to my capacity for organizing for that mass jail break....and four mommas with 7 of my kids can attest to my excellent communication skills and easy going personality.....and the school truant officers can attest to my most excellent attendance recorder.....I think that's enough.

The DUmmie should drop him a note.

Then he can help Fizzgig's husband.

If rsmithnumbers had any entrepreneurial spirit, he could make a career of helping DUmmies with their resume's.

LocoNuts could just put down all the women he has bedded.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Someone turned in a job app here, and put his mom down as his only reference.

Or, better yet, all of his therapists.  30+ year old boy without a single reference.

What a great response potential: "We've known LocoNuts since he was a little boy.

Stays close to home so his mom can watch him.

Has made several starts at college classes, but drops out after a couple of weeks to reduce the over-crowding.  Lets his mom check him out of school in order to give her something to do.

Has a good grasp of which drugs to ask his doctors (and there are many) for, and hardly ever suggests that the doctors are prescribing the wrong medications.  Got his medical training from other DUmmies on the internet."
This too shall pass.

Geez...

There aren't three people in the whole wide world this idiot can jot down on his resume'?

If worse came to worse, at least have three names from the phone book handy.

Seriously?  First of all, the odd of them calling your references for a cashier's job is fairly low. Stick your former boss on there, now you are a third of the way done.  Did you actually finish of of your classes, could you use one or two of your professors?  Any coworkers you've kept in contact with?

Yes, No, No.

He really is going to have to beg one of the DUmmies for their real name and number, and use him as a "personal" reference.

Great idea.

We could do the same for Doug Bulna's potential employer. Look at how we have helped him in his employment situation.

I don't think you could call LocoNuts a career student.

He enrolls, then breaks down sobbing and withdraws.

He's a career enroller.

Probably never used one and has no clue what a phone book is.

....and that's where the problems start.  As soon as he starts there, all the remotes in electronics will disappear. Later, he'll come back to the island and crow about it and say how stupid the management is but they love him anyway.  It's discovered by the good people of CC and walmart is alerted to the fool that stole the remotes in the first place.  He'll promptly be out on his butt and still not have any reliable references.

Now that was good!  I was a bit surprised though that no one tried to talk him out of going to WalMart and that he instead should apply at an organic market or something.

Think about it: they're (theoretically) responsible adults who know the Locust, and yet are limited by doctor-patient confidentiality as to what they can actually disclose about how ****ed up this man-cub is.

It depends on what sort of reference, most of the time academics will just throw out a standard

"Joe Bloggs was a student here from x until y and achieved some degree or other."

The Locust wouldn't do too well on that one.
