That is what kills me about these commercials for "gourmet" dog (and cat) food. Check your label, and check ours! We have fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts! And Omega 3! None of that is good for dogs! The very "worst" part of the animal is what is best for cats and dogs.
The worst thing about most "big bag" pet foods is they have a lot of ash in them which eventually puts a strain on the digestive system.
I read that grapes, raisins and most any dried fruit is very bad for dogs.
Thinking back to days on the farm, MIL's big dog survived mostly on goat milk. I have no idea why MIL had 2 milk goats, no one drank the milk but the dog. Only fed every other day and at 14 could still jump a 4 foot fence to chase a rabbit.
No dry food for the cats or dog, Some how I think the dry food contributes to tooth problems. In the last 25+ years I notice the Vets making a fortune cleaning dog and cat teeth. Cost us a little over $300.00 to have our rescue dog's abscessed tooth pulled, then later $800.00 to have them all yanked.
On the raw meat diet my animals do not poop so much, become regular, 30 or so minutes later after eating they go out, do their thing and that is it until they are fed next. Every thing gets digested at once, no waiting for nuts or grains or vegetables to take their time digesting.
Cost for 156 oz. of canned food is $20.00 I checked the label and found just 4% crude protein rest is just fillers at 96% Yikes. Hamburger At 2.25 per pound for 8 pounds is 100% protein costs $18.00.
Takes awhile a week or so before the dog' body adjusts to this diet, I do throw in a marrow soup bone once a week cleans the teeth, and I do catch Hubby sneaking the dog snacks, a raw carrot from time to time, or left over vegetables with some butter on them.
So I just reversed the ratio of food 4% vegetables and 96 % protein. No salt, or very low salt, NO sugar, no spices or flavor enhancers or so called meat flavored crap. I am kind of passionate about this dog, we lost our 2 rescue dogs due to age and physical problems and I truly believe most of the problems were due to feeding them both dry and canned foods.
BTW there is a recall on dry bagged dog food from a couple of high priced brands. This is serious as to recall a product costs the company a bundle of money and is a last ditch effort to avoid law suits.
