One of my daughter's friends' (daycare) father is going over there soon, with his unit.  I told him about this today--he hadn't heard about it.  I told him to watch his ass bigtime--or I will hunt him down in the afterlife and kick his ass.  And I will.  I was not smiling at all when I said this. 

He told me that he's going to make damned sure that he comes back alive and in one piece.

Dr. Mohammad Hassan Sahibi, the brother of the shooter, who was killed in the incident, had been battling financial troubles. Sahibi said his brother had no ties to insurgents.

And you wonder why the investigation for security clearances looks hard into things like financial troubles, perversions and other levers that an enemy could use to flip someone on the inside.   Whadaya wanna bet that this was how the Taliban got their hooks into this guy?

Lt. Col. Frank Bryant Jr. survived repeat bombing raids over Baghdad but died when a disgruntled Afghan pilot pulled a gun.

Bryant, 37, of Knoxville was the only Tennessean and the highest-ranking officer killed in Wednesday's mass shooting at the airport in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, military officials said Friday. Seven other airmen and an American civilian contractor died in the same shooting.

Bryant, a Karns High School graduate and former state wrestling champion, served with the Air Force's 56th Operations Group and had been stationed in Afghanistan since June 2010, attached to the 438th Air Expeditionary Advisory Group. His fellow officers called the loss "devastating."

"He excelled in everything he did and gave his life defending the nation he served for 16 years," said Brig. Gen. Jerry D. Harris Jr., commander of the 56th.

Bryant graduated from Karns High in 1991 and brought home the state trophy that year. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1995, where he was captain of the wrestling team and most valuable player.

"I've worked with a lot of kids, but he was one of my favorites," said Wayne Baughman, who coached Bryant at the academy.

Bryant received his Air Force wings in 1997 and was assigned to the 56th in August 2007, stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Ariz. He received his commission as a lieutenant colonel in July while serving in Afghanistan as an adviser to the budding air force there.

Bryant had piloted an F-16 on more than a dozen bombing missions in Baghdad, Iraq, and supported a surprise raid aimed at Saddam Hussein. His decorations included the Defense Meritorious Medal, two Air Force Accommodation Medals and the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Frank Bryant Jr. never believed in giving up.

"He knew what he had to do, and he did it," said Dan Dugger, who coached him for four years at Karns High School. "The first time I ever met him, he told me, 'I want to be a wrestler, and I want to be a fighter pilot.' Once he decided to do something, he worked all out for it."

That determination earned Bryant a state wrestling championship, his Air Force wings and the nickname "Bruiser".

"I've never seen another one like him," Dugger said. "He came in as a freshman weighing 90 pounds. When he won state champion, there was no jumping around and hollering. He took his headgear off, folded it, and just shook hands with his opponent and me."

Friends said Bryant didn't like to brag. So his commanders bragged for him.

"Bruiser is an absolute super star on my team of fighter pilots," Lt. Col. Jon Norman, who commanded Bryant's squadron during the Baghdad missions, wrote in a 2003 letter to Bryant's parents, Frank and Pat. "I am very honored to lead such a fine young man."

Friends said Bryant left behind a wife and a son. Funeral arrangements remain incomplete
