Now in Brooklyn, Homegrown Tobacco: Local, Rebellious and Tax Free

Ms. Silk’s backyard is home to raspberry and rose bushes, geraniums, impatiens and 100 tobacco plants in gardening buckets near her wooden deck. Inside her house, around the corner from Flatbush Avenue, in Marine Park, she has to be careful stepping into her basement — one wrong move could ruin her cigarettes. Dozens of tobacco leaves hang there, drying on wires she has strung across the room, where they turn a crisp light brown as they age above a stack of her old Springsteen records.

She talks about cartons and packs in relation to crops and seeds. Planted in 2009, her first crop— 25 plants of Golden Seal Special Burley tobacco — produced nine cartons of cigarettes. Ms. Silk would have spent more than $1,000 had she bought nine cartons in parts of New York City. Instead, she spent $240, mostly for the trays, the buckets and plant food.

But for Ms. Silk, 46, a retired police officer and the founder of New York City Clash (Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment), a smokers’ rights group, it is not just about the money. It is about the message. In the state with the highest cigarette taxes in the country, in a city that has become one of the hardest places in America to find a place to smoke, Ms. Silk has gone off the grid, growing, processing and smoking her own tax-free cigarettes from packets of seeds she buys online for about $2. She expects to produce a total of 45 cartons after planting two crops — the first in the summer of 2009, the second last summer — and estimates that she will have saved more than $5,000.

“It’ll make the antismokers apoplectic,” said Ms. Silk. “They’re using the power of taxation to coerce behavior. That’s not what taxation is supposed to be for.”

I've thought about it, but I thought tobacco had special conditions to grow, soil, temp and whatnot.

Every plant does.  If I grow anything it's usually basil, and I've managed to ruin a couple plants after making some mistakes.  I say good luck to anyone that can figure out how to grow something and not kill it, because that ain't me.

I've found a way to work around the exorbitant cigarette prices, all of the added chemicals & some of the taxes, too. However, I'm not growing my own tobacco.

No, I buy it locally, but I DO make my own. It's just the type of tobacco I use. It works almost as well.

Yeah ya do 20 years in the NYPD and you can retire then they come up here and get a job as a county mountie and milk us for a while.
Everybody I know who still smokes rolls their own. Who is buying those $10 packs? Democrats I bet! :stoner:
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

A few of the old eyetie tobacco growers on the hills behind town here decided, after the government terminated their livelihoods to sell "chop-chop" which is unexcised tobacco.

They got more hard time and fine for a triple trailer truck of tobacco than what they would have for the same volume of weed.

Our government gets around excise cheaters like this by making it more illegal to grow and cure tobacco than it is to do same with weed. Which is similar to their attitude on producing spirits for personal consumption.

Hells yeah!!!  :rotf: :rotf:  :fuelfire:

I went the new age E-Cigarette and find the cost is at less then $10.00 a carton.

My Doctor was thrilled about this new devise and so am I.

It will take awhile to educate the public that this is along the idea of a nicotine patch or chewing gum, however the company's that make these nicotine delivery systems have brought law suits against the Airlines that ban them and now are going after chain restaurants and bars.

Wont be long before one can belly up to the bar order a drink and smoke these things -----Like old times with no smoke just water vapor and the glowing end and the feel of a real cigarette in the hand.

None of the 2,000 additives placed in tobacco and that does not include the paper and filters.

Best investment I ever made,  I save per month the cost of 4 cartons of cigarettes at $40.00 each ===$ 160.00--- both of us smoke so that comes to $320.00 a month for cheap off brand smokes.

We save $240 an month or darn close to $3,000.00 a  year and our hacking coughs are gone, we can now smell better and food tastes better.

No more smell of smoke on our clothing or hair, the house carpets and drapes now have no tobacco Oder.  The new smell stays in our autos and no problem with our fingers turning yellow from the additives.

Still our brains do not know the difference and the nicotine still gives us a boost up, like coffee or tea.  Our lungs are clearing up, no sinuses headaches and there is little problem with our skin or veins that contract with real cigarettes.

Any one that has the addiction needs to check into this, it is not the nicotine we are addicted to but the additives added.  Who can as a smoker go a few hours without Strictnine,  headed for the lungs????

A temporary employee came into the building puffing one of those e-cigarettes the other day.  That is the second time I have been exposed to the vapors coming off of one of those things, and nearly vomited from the smell.  I do not smoke, and regular cigarette second hand smoke has no such effect on me.

Maybe they are putting ipecac in them?  :-)

Better yet, run a hose from the tailpipe to a window for just a few minutes.  O-)
