U.S. Revises Nuclear Blast Aftermath Guidance...

...or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.  :lmao:

I can't believe this. Some twits sitting around in D.C. making 6 figures a year probably came up with this nonsense.

Quote
U.S. Revises Nuclear Blast Aftermath Guidance

The United States has updated its guidance for the immediate aftermath of a potential nuclear strike, urging people in the vicinity of a blast to remain inside sturdy structures until they receive the green light to leave from authorities, the New York Times reported yesterday (see GSN, Sept. 9).

The recommendation -- rooted in new studies pointing to the danger radioactive fallout would pose just after the blast -- is thought capable of preventing hundreds of thousands of deaths. The protection from radiation offered by cars alone could cut casualties by half, according to the expert assessments.

WTF over. IF your anywhere within 25 miles of a nuclear blast and somehow survived it won't be for long or your going to be the Incredible Hulk.

Fox News played one of the old "Duck and Cover" commercials before talking about this yesterday. I'm too young to remember seeing them on TV.

Depends--you talking a couple-hundred KT firecracker or a 20MT crowd pleaser?

Drop a 10MT on Boston and about the only thing I'd say is, "Hey--someone hear a noise?"

I was thinking of something around a 20-25MT warhead.  I used to have a link to a site that showedthe effect of both 10mt and a 25mt nuke. I put GZ on the intercection of 72nd and Dodge in Omaha and a 25MT weapon would wipe out all signs of it. The area for 20 miles would be ease land.

True, but in reality there are very few of those nukes, comparatively speaking.  Truth be told, I'd be surprised if there were a lot of nukes above the 500kT range.

It depends.  Does dying of radiation poisoning let me come back as a flesh eating zombie?

I dunno--ask Ptarmigan.  He's been on a, "kill them with radiation" kick of late.

I'd rather die in the blast than suffer the long term effects of radiation poisoning.

Check out Chenoble and how the people survived that catastrophe.

Wish I could find the link for the neighbors down wind in other country's that are on the hunt for now wild hogs that they kill in the forests as their meat is now dangerous to eat.  Made me wonder as cattle and other meat animals were eating much the same grains and grasses as the hogs.

Colonial, I am of the duck and cover generation and remember my father in the military at that time that laughed at the films the government put out.

One little film caused him to shake his head.  The film was about radiation poisoning.  totally ridicules.  It stated that when exposed to radiation the youth would notice sores forming on their face---Have no worry this is a vanity issue that will soon go away.

Good oral hygiene will prevent teeth from falling out and when hair begins to fall out, it will soon begin to grow back.

Here was a man that saw cement blocks dumped off the fan tale of boats not that far out to sea containing radio active material in the 1950's.

Mind you, he had to be very careful what he said around me as he never knew if I would repeat what he said in school when some of these films were shown.  He had only a few years to go for his pension and at that time was in fear of loosing it.  Paranoia was every where at that time.

At this time I vaguely remember my parents half hartley placing canned goods in the cellar next to the washing machine with a window over it.  They called this their fall out shelter, they knew darn well this was totally useless but felt it would put my mind at ease with all the duck and cover drills in school.

That was at first so foolish, the class rooms had huge windows any form of blast would have cut us to ribbons and the last one I remember was for us to kneel facing a wall in the hall.

Truth be told few of us really paid attention to all of this, none of this was in our world as children, we did not follow the news and were blissfully unaware of anything outside our safe and secure world.

My generation was so far apart from the rest of the world, we had never seen war, tanks coming down our streets, hiding from the police or Army of some other country's.

My generation was perhaps the last to allow children to be just that, children.   We aged into a world of war, VN and ran about like chickens with their heads cut off.  We unlike most of the world could not associate with war, freedom or want things to change from our childhood.

Our parents that even WW2 vets had never seen in America bloodshed like they had seen in far away places . Denial by all, this can never happen in America.

Paranoia is a survival method, like that of the Rabbit.  Every society that has become self sufficient and Liberal has come to a fast end.  Those society that are pacifists have invited the wolves in the door thinking they can change their basic mind set, it just doesn't work.

We have no choice but to follow our government, be loyal and strong in our basic beliefs.    This does not mean that the government is GOD, one has to stand up and question every move they make.  Become suspicious of that wolf at the door, ----Little pigs, little pigs, let me in, I have a gift for you.

You're all missing something, gang--why would the government feel the need to update this stuff?

Do they know a tad more about Iranian nukes, and the missile batteries going to Venezuela?

Or is it the NoKo nukes?  Maybe the Chinese SSBNs?

Why are they updating this?

When they talked about this on Fox News, they mentioned that the government was trying to get this info out without making people panic and start to wondering.

What, they changed "Bend over and kiss your ass goodbye"?  I'm confused.

I thought the same thing.

Makes you wonder if they received some sort of threat.

ARRRR EVil, when have we not received threats from what I can remember, way before the Cuban Missiles problem and onward into today's history.

There is so much going on in the world of diplomacy that until now with wikkileaks we never knew or imagined was happening.

We still do not know who or where the ballistic missile came from off the coast of California, who is giving NK the technology to amp up their Missile program, Pakistan scares the hell out of the Indian government  on and on.

Our diplomats know, but, we the citizens will never know about all the close calls we have had.

As an example, the place Sparky works at sends out a free calendar every year with evacuation routs for those that live within a 20+ mile radius of his station.  This is not for war, but if Sparky accidentally hits the wrong button at work.

In one section it tells people to say in their homes, in another tells us the bus route stopping areas to gather at outside to get a ride to some kind of shelter.

Seriously now, just who is going to leave their family and drive these buses.??  Who is going to man the evacuation centers and not trying to find family or their kids in school.

If they are 20 miles away at work and the SHTF, are people not going to try to enter the danger zone to pull their family and pets out of the area??

Simple explanation of a very small disaster in the town next door 20+ some years ago.

A fighter jet crashed into a housing project that was about half a mile from huge LPG tank storage. The project had a few apartment homes  go up in flames.

Out of the blue, totally unexpected the police and fire department were running their butts off trying to evacuate the entire complex, about 300 apartments and at the same time keep family and friends of the residents from running into the mess --some totally crazed to find their family's.

It was a mad house with the sight seers converging on the area, the Air Force trying to find out what happend. Then 30 near by towns responded to the fire just in case it spread to the tanks that could explode and wipe a few towns off the map.

This was a small cataclysm for the town, now imagine had the fighter jet crashed into the tanks of LPG.

While we worry about some two bit country lobbing a bomb at us knowing we would retaliate and blow them off the face of the earth, we loose sight of our own personal dangers.

Hoover Damn, earth quake or sabotage ruptures,   at the same time the quake or sabotage hits the storage areas for spent nuclear waste.

Ice storm blocks off most of our military componds in the Midwest, nothing can get in the air.

The idea is that we can only protect ourselves in life in very limited ways.   Arm ourselves against the 2 footed beasts, stock up on food and water just in case of a problem, but, we have to rely on the professionals to get us out of what ever fix we find ourselves----and PRAY.
