What has socialism/communism given us?

I was listening to Glenn Beck this morning.  He was comparing capitalism vs socialism/communism.  He gave examples of what capitalism has given us and then compared what it cost back when it was invited vs what it costs today by comparing how long it took someone to buy it (how many days/hours of their paycheck) when the item first came out to what it cost today.  How our quality of life has improved by the competition of capitalism.  Things like air conditioning, refrigerators, telephone service & cell phones, washers, cars etc use to be only for the rich then as competition came into the picture, the cost of the items have become more and more affordable so that almost everyone can afford the things that use to be reserved for just the "rich".

So then he started asking the question, "What has socialism and or communism given us".  What great invention that has revolutionized the world has been bought to us through socialism/communism?  Can anyone name something?

Actually, if one THINKS about the effects of communism on the world, it has given us a LOT in order to combat it. We wouldn't have gotten to the moon first. We wouldn't have the internet. Our technology would probably still be mid-50s era tech. Many things. I'm not saying that socialism/ communism is good, but it has made us stay on top of things and advance ourselves in order to effectively battle it.
