Three US troops killed by man in Afghan army uniform
« on: August 10, 2012, 06:52:32 AM »

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN –  A man in an Afghan army uniform shot and killed three American service members on Friday morning in southern Afghanistan, the U.S. military command said, the third attack on coalition forces by their Afghan counterparts in a week. The Taliban claimed the shooter joined the insurgency after the attack.

The shooting took place in Sangin district of Helmand province, said U.S. military spokeswoman Maj. Lori Hodge. She gave no details and said the military were investigating.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said by telephone that the attacker, whom he identified as a member of Helmand police named Asadullah, had joined the insurgency after his attack.

Ahmadi said the man had been helping U.S. forces train the Afghan Local Police troops.

The U.S. is hoping the Afghan Local Police will be a key force to fight the insurgency after most international troops withdraw.

The attack is the third this week on coalition soldiers by Afghans who are training to take over once most international forces leave in 2014.

On Tuesday, two gunmen wearing Afghan army uniforms killed a U.S. soldier and wounded two others in Paktia province in the east. And on Thursday, two Afghan soldiers tried to gun down a group of NATO troops outside a military base in eastern Afghanistan. No international forces were killed, but one of the attackers was killed as NATO forces shot back.

This year has seen a rising number of so-called "green-on-blue" attacks in which Afghan security forces, or insurgents disguised in their uniforms, kill their U.S. or NATO partners.

So far this year, 30 coalition troops have been killed in 20 such attacks, according to an Associated Press tally. That compares with 11 fatal attacks and 20 deaths the previous year. In 2007 and 2008 there was a combined total of four attacks and four deaths.

I still say turn the whole region into a glass parking lot.

It's the only way to be sure. I think all potential Arab targets should be given a chance to visit the trinity test site. One glance there would be worth a thousand diplomatic exchanges.

We care more about their lives and the lives of the other Afghans than they do.

Some atomic tipped TLAM's will work just fine I think.

What really pisses me off is Jay Carney calling this pattern of attacks "negligible."

Really, Jay?  Seems to me these folks along with the three Marines murdered yesterday wouldn't consider their situation "negligible."

Jay is using "Strategicspeak" which is a new language that's just been developed out of the White House.

It's based on zero knowledge of the operational art; crucial, misguided, and inconsequential understanding of military strategy; and an overwhelming ignorance of what the Taliban is attempting to do -- destroy the will of the U.S. to defend our interests in Afghanistan.

Jay thinks by flicking this story off this finger, just like the booger he dug out of his nose, the problem will go away.

Jay is a moron of the worst kind -- frequently wrong, never in doubt.

Every time I read one of these stories I get a knot in my stomach. We are going on our 11th year in Afghanistan and it's clear that we have no idea why we are still there. There can't be any real goal, if there were we certainly would have achieved it by now. If Obama thinks he's going to bring democracy to that shit hole he's dumber than I thought.

If we still had a republican president I would hope he would realize that this war is a total waste and pull everyone the hell out. Probably because of the non-stop wailing of the left and the constant negative reporting by the liberal media. The left would of course announce to the world that the withdraw was the biggest military defeat in American history, and a total failure of American foreign policy. Who knows how long the cries for impeachment would go on.

But of course we have a Democrat President, and because of this we continue to send Americans back home in body bags. All the while the silence of the left is deafening, dead silence, not a peep. Not even the miscreant's at DU talk about it. If for some unknown reason Obama suddenly decided to pull everyone out of Afghanistan, I would applaud this decision by the way, the left would be screaming from the roof tops claiming that the Obumbler was the greatest CIC in the history of the presidency and that he was responsible for the greatest foreign policy victory ever.

All kidding aside, I don't care who does it or who takes credit for it. We need an immediate and total withdraw of American troops from Afghanistan. That third world shit hole is not worth one more american life.

The problem is, owebuma's huge ego, and the fact that he can't backtrack on saying "Afghanistan is the good war". He can never admit he is wrong on anything, he is the anointed one. He is infallible, he doesn't make mistakes, why would he admit to any ?

I was behind this war 100% until Karzai came out slandering our troops.  Once he opened his yap I started feeling it was time to just hand them the keys to the asylum and move on out.

If we can maintain a strategic footprint in the area, including, to the extent possible, air bases, ground forces, all capable of delivering nukes, I'd say let A-stan go back to the Taliban.

Kyrzgyzstan, or Uzbekhistan, or hell, even India would work. Since Pahkeestahn ain't doing much but playing both ends against the middle, maybe we'd have better luck with the Indians.

Oh, those who have been there know why we're there.  It's just that the politicians and generals (and really, what's the difference between them these days?) have instituted ROE's that would have Job throwing his shit down and saying to hell with it.
