Talk me out of it...
« on: March 12, 2010, 04:36:25 PM »
Ok so, we have natural black walnut through out the whole house (except one bathroom has white painted trim with bead board wainscoting *VERY CUTE BATHROOM* and the computer room & kitchen have cherry).  It is beautiful EXCEPT I LOVE large white painted baseboards.  I really really really want to paint the trim in our bedroom....like really badly.  I also want to add wainscoting, more than 1/2 way up the wall.  Not the bead board type wainscoting.  I also want an iron bed which I will show you below.

My husband told me when we moved in here that I couldn't paint any of the woodwork but I just mentioned to him what I want to do and he actually seemed receptive to the idea (just in our bedroom).  We have a very odd shaped bedroom, it's shaped like an L.   The bathroom doesn't have a door which is very weird to me, we want to close it in with a transom above the door.  We are also going to retile the bathroom but the cabinets area really pretty so we will leave that. We will get new sinks, get a new toilet (we have a stupid bidet that is ugly and gross) but keep the bathtub as it looks brand new.  Also get new fixtures.  We aren't going to move any plumbing or anything, just purely cosmetic stuff.  It's not ugly right now, just not our style and the tile on the floor makes a crunching sound when we walk on it.  My husband will be doing all the work so we will save money on labor.  We may have the guy who did the woodwork do the door with transom but we might offend him by taking out/painting his baseboards.  My husband mentioned taking the baseboards off (saving them) and then doing the wainscoting as you see below.

This is kind of what I'm thinking (only more substantial).  I think I would leave the doors the way they are like in the picture as they too are solid natural black walnut.  Absolutely beautiful doors.  Although in the bathroom (with the white trim and wainscoting) the door on the bathroom side is painted white and the door that when closed faces the kitchen is cherry.

Here is the metal bed that I want

Here is another bed that I like

I would LOVE to do this to my stairs but that is out of the question as far as my husband is concerned.

So.....is it sacrilege to do what I'm seriously thinking of doing?

I don't see anything wrong with doing it.

But its kind of like saying you aren't coming back to Texas any time soon.

That is gorgeous, but painting black walnut is a little scary as that must be beautiful also.

I love those stairs --- definitely do the stairs!

LOVE it BEG!!! I say go for it. It's a timeless look.

Here's our iron bed. I love it!! We got it at Bombay & Co. which is no longer in business I think.
I still have to paint the whole house. It's standard builder beige.

I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

:-) Tee hee. Believe it or not, we've had that bed for about 8 years. I'm still not tired of it.

Please don't paint such beautiful wood.

What if we take the baseboards off and save them, don't paint the doors and then do the wainscoting like what is pictured above?  Then if we sell we can say we have the baseboards if they want to put them back on or in case I want to put them back on?!?

That might be OK.  I just love the look of natural wood vs. painted wood.

Help keep America beautiful...deface a liberal.

The Democrat and Republican parties are simply the left and right wings of the same bird of prey.

The road to freedom is paved with dead liberals.

I'm with rich......if you absolutely HAVE to have painted woodwork, pull the hardwood off, and store it......put up crappy pine woodwork and then paint it.......

My daughter bought a condo in Chicago, where some idiot painted all of the beautiful TEAK woodwork from the building's construction in the 1920's white, and she has spent nearly $16,000 having it stripped and refinished to its original state.......it's georgeous now, but was an unnecessary waste of money.....

If it is fine wood don't do it!

It's natural black walnut.  It is beautiful wood, the doors are solid black walnut.  It almost looks like oil rubbed teak.   It's just that it is everywhere.  It's so dark.  If we do it we will take the baseboards out and save them, we will not paint the doors either.

Here is what the wood looks like:

BEG it is gorgeous wood but I think if it's done right, the look you want can be so striking!!! I know most people are saying not to paint the wood, but I think you should do what you think you'll like. You have to live in the house....

Well that is actually flooring.  This black walnut looks very similar to the wood in our house except our doors and moulding are "beefier".

Yeah, but I don't live in a sprawling million-dollar movie star mansion in L.A. with a see-ment pond and a wise old turtle.

I live in a 1500 sq. ft. bungalow in Texas.   :-)

And my new floors are vinyl-to-look-like-wood, which don't look that similar after all....

We are getting rid of the "wise old turtles", they are a PITA.  When they lay eggs you have to incubate them and do all kinds of crap.  We are giving them back to their previous owners when they get settled in their new place.

I'm ignoring the other comment you made.

Where did you put your new floors? Are they in yet?  How do you like it?

I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to brag.  I will NEVER make you feel bad about not living in Texas again.

Consider me a hard surface flooring convert. Our new house only has carpeting upstairs. The entire bottom floor is hardwood. So much easier! Now to convince hubby that we should change the carpet LOL.
