Has anyone ever recovered window awnings?
« on: October 19, 2009, 07:50:55 PM »
We are getting ready to paint our house. The shutters and window awnings are that geen that you see on a lot of awnings. We are going to change the shutters (different style and wider) and awnings to black. The frames are fine and the awnings are in really good shape. I was thinking of taking the awnings apart and using them as a pattern and just making them myself. Has anyone done this before and if so, how hard is it?

What sort of material are the current awnings made of?

A canvas/sunbrella type fabric.

I can't help ya there.  I've never tried to redo canvas.

Believe it or not....it can sort of be done.

My little brother did it at his house. He found out what the awning company was going to charge him....went out and bought a sewing machine, took the existing ones apart at the seams and made patterns, got the canvas and made new ones.

Surprised the heck out of me that he did it. He is an engineer though.... :-)

I already have a sewing machine and have made window treatments and fabic covered window seat cushions numerous times (and they have all turned out fabulous if I do say so myself  :p). I think I can do it but wanted to know if anyone had done it before and if it was really hard, especially not having a commercial sewing machine.

If you can make those fancy quilts, I'm sure you can make anything out of canvas.  Draw out or measure out a pattern.  Just make sure you use a heavy-duty needle that will thread through canvas.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

BEG, if you have a strong enough sewing machine (a good Singer or Phaff), you shoulden't have a problem with Sunbrella (I worked in an upholstery fabric store as my first job). I've done canvas on a little Singer 221 Featherweight I have.

I've got a Janome made for quilting.  I would hate to screw it up because I wanted to save a few hundred dollars.

It should work for Sunbrella. It's not that thick of fabric, but I would think someone at the fabric store could tell you.

I doubt that my brother bought a real expensive machine. He was wanting to save money by making them, not spend all that he was saving on a sewing machine.
