Title: Minor question about attachments and file hosting sites.
Post by: thundley4 on May 19, 2014, 12:10:26 PM
Is it better for this site for us to post pictures using the attachment feature or to use a file hosting site like Photobucket, in terms of bandwidth?  does it matter?

Some file hosting sites, like Photobucket, are verrrrryyyyy slow to load. I use the space on my ISP (10mb) for graphics. 'Course I have to monitor how much I use.

Using attachments consumes our bandwidth.  Off-site hosting (Photobucket) is generally better.

What about hotlinking a picture to a site that allows it?

Only if they allow it.  It's no different to the site than using Photobucket.

Okay, thanks. I'll try and minimize using attachments.

The only benefit I can think of in using attachments is that they aren't visible to guests.

I hotlink whenever possible. If not, I download to my PC and upload to my allocated space on my ISP, and link from there.

I don't like hotlinking.  You're using someone else's bandwidth and have no control over the image if it gets moved or changed.

If I remember correctly that bit the DUmmies in the ass one time back in the old CU days.
