WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route off the Iranian coast, during the weekend, Pentagon officials said on Monday.
The captain of one of the U.S. ships was in the process of giving an order to fire but the order was not implemented as the Iranian boats then moved away, one official said.
The official said the five Iranian speedboats "pretty much swarmed" the three U.S. vessels in international waters with the Iranians threatening that one of the U.S. ships would blow up in minutes.
U.S. officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, were confirming a report first aired by CNN.
Oil prices got a brief boost from the news about the confrontation as dealers weighed the threat to oil shipments along the key shipping route. Crude futures jumped 49 cents to $98.40 a barrel before slipping back into negative territory.
The incident took place about 4 a.m. GMT on Sunday, or late Saturday night in Washington, the officials said.
According to the officials, the radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said: "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes."
The officials said it was not unusual for Iranian boats to get close to U.S. ships in the strait but the radio transmission was unusual.

They seem to have forgotten what happened in 1987.
I hated going through there..............everytime we were challenged by thr Iranians. DJ, that's probably the reason that they didn't act fast on the triggers, we are in their waters and also it has been happening for years.
Though now that they made that transmission about blowing up (or bad porn) I feel sure that the Navy will be closer on the triggers

Quite a few years ago I remember a cartoon (I think it was "The Far Side"). It showed two vultures sitting on a branch and one says to the other "I'm tired of waiting, I want to kill something". Cosgriff said two Iranian boats also dropped floating white boxes into the water. He offered no explanation for that move but said the U.S. ships passed the boxes safely.
Passed the boxes safely (doesn't specify that they boxes were destroyed ) ?

The Iranians have very short memories. They got their butts handed to them the last time they tried this crap back in the 80's.
They even sacrificed one of their own commercial airliners trying to get us into all out war and we didn't take the bait.
IMHO they need to be taught more lasting lesson.

The Sarge, I watched that shit on the news back in 88(?). It was pretty clear that many of those corpses were taken from a local morgue because many of them just had diapers or underwear on. I always believed that airliner was a set-up.

You and me both. And consideing the flight pattern the airliner came in on...the Vincennes had every reason to believe the incoming was a fighter on an attack run.
Like I said the Iranians were trying to goad us into a fight. We'd already been attacked and had a battle with their gun boats by the time the Airliner got shot down.
They are trying to provoke us again.
Perhaps it's time to remind them of what a DD or CG is capable of doing. :D

The video from Sunday's incident shows small Iranian boats swarming around U.S. warships in the Strait of Hormuz. In the recording, a man speaking in heavily accented English threatened, "I am coming to you. ... You will explode after ... minutes."
"The footage released by the U.S. Navy was compiled using file pictures and the audio has been fabricated," an official in Iran's Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying by the state-run English-language channel Press TV.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- President Bush warned Iran of "serious consequences" if it meddles again with U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf, opening a Mideast peacemaking mission Wednesday on an ominous note. He told Israel to dismantle unauthorized settlement outposts and demanded that the Palestinians halt rocket attacks from areas controlled by Hamas Islamic militants.

Nahh, we have conventional weapons that could have taken out those boats, launched from either a ship or an aircraft.
