Wonder why she forgot that dems outspent Jolly by almost 4-1?

She also forgot to mention that the last guy to hold the seat usually ran unopposed or against no name candidates...

Democratic loss in Florida special election: omen for November? Yes, I believe it is. :-)

In the Democratic playbook, Alex Sink was going to show her party how to overcome public unhappiness with Obamacare – and its author, President Obama – by winning a tossup congressional district in the biggest battleground state, Florida.

That didn’t happen. Ms. Sink, initially the better-known and better-funded candidate, lost to first-time candidate David Jolly (R), a Washington lobbyist and former aide to the late Rep. Bill Young (R), whose St. Petersburg-centered seat he will now occupy.

Mr. Jolly didn’t win by much: 48.5 percent to Sink’s 46.6 percent, with Libertarian candidate Lucas Overby taking 4.8 percent. But a win is a win, and Democrats are left scrambling for a Plan B as they head into a challenging midterm election season. Retaking control of the House now looks even more unlikely; holding onto the Senate remains the Democrats’ primary imperative.

“Dems should not try to spin this loss,” tweeted Democratic strategist Paul Begala. “We have to redouble our efforts for 2014. Too much at stake. #noexcuses.”

1. The real fight is keeping the Senate. We're not going to win the House in 2014.

Our base only shows up in presidential elections. Sigh.  Cry me a river.

8. wait, a Republican lobbyist insider wins a narrow election in FL against the favored Dem?

not worth the untraceable ballots it was stolen with. There is no democracy since 2000 (at least)

It was close because the libertarian wacko drained off 5% of the vote, from halfwits who think libertarianism is a viable alternative.

As always, the libertarian candidate was a democrat tool, not unlike the despicable Ross Perot, who elected Clinton in 1992 by draining off the simpleminded margins of the Republican base.

Before WE get too happy, let's consider a few things:

--Democrats are in it for the long game.  They'd rather lose a few seats here and there (and this would have been a pickup, not a loss) in the midterms and gain them all back (and the White House) in the generals.

--This WAS in fact a GOP seat prior to yesterday.  We "gained" nothing.

--The margin of victory was less than 2 percent.

--Turnout for special elections, like midterms, tends to be lighter than elections in presidential election years.  Yesterday was no exception, with just under 40 percent of voters casting ballots.

--Young was elected for 42 years not for any conservative values per se, but because as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, he had a BIG say in brining home federal money to his district.

Enjoy the moment.  But only for a moment.

I think that one of the major factors in this was the fact that Carl pointed out--Sink's campaign outspent Jolly's by a large margin.  One of the members of the deer camp I belong to (a serious liberal who is the camp's treasurer--hasn't stolen any, because the taxes always get paid--and he's usually good for comic relief) is all excited about the prospects of unseating Rep. Chris Gibson in NY, saying that Gibson's presumptive opponent is a millionaire.  If this campaign proved anything, it's that money in campaigns cannot fix the monstrosity that is Obamacare.

Wasn't there also redistricting that made it more favorable to dems?

I wouldn't worry about trying to defend the ACA either, it is here to stay. The huge majority of Americans never had a big problem with our previous health care system and they won't have a problem with this one, so no point in dwelling on it.
Concentrate on jobs and bettering the average persons daily life now and we can finish taking the House in 2016.

In the last 6 years, WHEN did the rats ever concentrate on jobs?

The rats just spent an all nighter talking about golbal warming on the floor of congress: they weren't filibustering, there was no law at stake, the rats were just blowing air at the cameras...

You are in a pretty bad political situation when you think your strongest selling point is global warming.

The former is an outcome of the latter. The latter is an outcome of the former. One has to wonder how much of Europe would be taking Russian lessons if Kerry won in 2004.
