new tire rental places - poor rent tires monthly for three times the value

http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-rent-a-tire-20130609,0,1748795.story

When the tires on their Dodge Caravan had worn so thin that the steel belts were showing through, Don and Florence Cherry couldn't afford to buy a new set.

So they decided to rent instead.

The Rich Square, N.C., couple last September agreed to pay Rent-N-Roll $54.60 a month for 18 months in exchange for four basic Hankook tires. Over the life of the deal, that works out to $982, almost triple what the radials would have cost at Wal-Mart.

"I know you have to pay a lot more this way," said Florence Cherry, a 57-year-old nurse who drives the 15-year-old van when her husband, a Vietnam veteran, isn't using it to get to his job as a prison guard. "But we didn't really have a choice."

Socked by soaring tire prices and short on funds, growing numbers of Americans are renting the rubber to keep their cars rolling.

Rent-to-own tire shops are among the newest arrivals to a sprawling alternative financial sector focused on the nation's economic underclass. Like payday lenders, pawn shops and Buy Here Pay Here used-car lots, tire rental businesses provide ready credit to consumers who can't get a loan anywhere else. But that access doesn't come cheap.tp://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-rent-a-tire-20130609,0,1748795.story

High prices are driving more motorists to rent tires

Chains such as Rent-a-Wheel and Rimco are seeing business boom. Many consumers pay double or triple the cost of buying and face aggressive repossession policies.

First up, Skippy from New York City, although he lives in San Franscisco:

2. So, when the tires get repossessed, the vehicle might be anywhere.

Then it can't be moved, without tires, gets impounded eventually, and the family can never afford to get it back.

People are stupid.

They rent them because they come with fancy stupid wheels.  Do these DUmmies think people are only renting the tires?

A nurse and a prison guard (public union wage) can`t afford or don`t have managed credit to get new tires at probably a hundred or so each?
That is a special kind of stupid.

Strangest thing I ever heard.
Is that really done?
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

That's what I thought too, Carl. Nurses make good money and assuming this lady has been a nurse for sometime, it said she was 57, she got to be making some good coin.

I ain't never heard of it... don't surprise me though. Fools and their money and all that.

I got curious and googled it. Yes there are places that rent tires. At least I'm assuming this place does cause their name is Rent a Tire.

Welcome to a fundamentally changed 0bama America.

Remember when the insensitive asshole said to the person that could not afford high gas, "Maybe you should buy a new car that gets better gas mileage?"

0bama feels your pain.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

So they'll pay $54.60 for 18 months instead of saving $54.60 for 5 or 6 months and paying cash. Geniuses.  ::)

It amazes me that people would think that paying 2-3 times the going price is the only way to do something.  I don't know how many places do 90-180 days same as cash, and they're at the point they're practically giving away Walmart credit cards again.

Unless, of course, you have a 390 FICO.  Nah, that can't be it.

There used to be cheap recaps......but a democrat government concerned for the welfare of lawyers screwed that business up.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Tires aren't just used. They're used up. They're consumables.

Renting tires is like renting a sack of potatoes.

But then DUmmies who use credit cards at the grocery store are sort of doing just that.

Totally agree - glad that NYC_SKP now supports significant cuts to the unaffordable and non-essential elements of the government budget so that there is no structural deficit...somehow I'm not sure that what the DUmmy means though.

Wow - that's dumb - not the business owners, they are geniuses - but the rent to own people.

I never buy new tires. There is a place in the city that gets quality used tires. They install, balance, and dispose of your old tires for the cost of one new quality tire. They also guarantee them, so if it is defective they replace it free of charge.

I suspect the 'rent to own' places specialize in 'Low Profile' tires - which I think are among the stupidest things ever created.
