What about a dynamo radio?

Thought about that, but if things get that bad, I'm not sure how much use it would be. Might be one of those "if I have it and can fit it, I'll take it" things.

What about a dynamo radio?

I have sold those before, and they are about as usefull in real life as a "shake flashlight".  Crank and crank for 30 minutes to get 5 minutes of battery life.

My choice is my Zune.  It has an FM radio built in, and I also have a small AM-FM-Short Wave I keep in my pack.  I also have a Solio solar charger that I use for battery charging.

http://store.solio.com/Solio-Magnesium-Edition

My buddy made me a simple USB-to-battery charger to replenish AA and C cell batteries from the charger.  But it also charges everything else from my cell phone to the AA and C cells in my flashlights.

It will charge the Zune?

One of the adaptors is to a USB.  I just plug the Zune cord into it.  It worked great when I was in Yuma a year and a half ago.

And one of the things I love about my Zune is the built-in radio.  I use it every day to listen to AFN.

AFN has an FM station out there?

We have 2 of them actually.  One is a JackFM, the other varies between hiphop and top-40.  We also have a few others.

Of course, I only listen to the JackFM one myself.

One thing that might be handy is one of those two wheeled things that folks sometimes use to move killed deer out of the fields. While they would restrict one away from rough terrain, that cart could come in handy for hauling extra goods.

My hunting pack consists of...

120ft of Parachute Cord
Hand Saw
Two Multi-Tools
Fire Starter
Compass
Large skinning knife
.308 Rifle
20 Gauge Shot Gun
Adequate ammo for both
Compound Bow with 6 arrows, 4 broadheads.

I have several pairs of thermals, 6 pairs of wool socks, three gortex jackets, 2 gortex pants, 3 pairs of gortex boots, and jacket liners for two gortex jackets.

Only thing that is really missing is first aid items.  I've got the knowledge, just need the kit.

Even though it sounds like it's just for hunting day trips, you really might want to think seriously about adding a first aid kit to that.

Off the top of my head, this is the first thing I can thing of for my BOB:

A handgun with extra magazines
A good thermal blanket
Lots of clean socks
Gloves, scarf, and a ski cap.  don't dismiss a good scarf for keeping warm.
MRI's.  Food and lots of it.
LED flashlight and extra batteries
Flints/matches/cotton... things to start a fire with.

And as a last-minute addition, a couple scratched CDs for mirrors, but a first-aid kit is a really good idea.

I've heard wool is good for keeping warm.  I don't make a habit of wearing wet clothes but I've heard (from the English mostly) that wool will keep you warm after it gets wet, unlike cotton.

Yeah, I know. I plan on hitting some hikes this next spring and summer where I'll need that space and water containment, though.

If I'm planning on spending the day at the junkyard, I'll freeze a gallon jug of water and bring it with me.  By the time I get thirsty, it's usually ready to drink.  Plastic jugs don't handle many freeze-thaw cycles well, though.

I have some Cabela's wool socks I've worn while hunting and cracked into frozen creeks with. They did keep my foot somewhat warmer than cotton socks would have with the amount of water that got into the boot.

I got a CamelBak ST-5 "Law enforcement" pack for an overnight on-foot hunting gear pack. They're great. Pockets and attachments everywhere.

Wool is great for warmth. Beats the hell out of cotton and most poly or cotton blends. Not that warmth is really much of an issue in my pert of the globe.

Some sort of sutures/surgical instrument procurement is in the works also.

Suture kits are available from any decent medical supply place - or ask your doctor if they can supply one.

I've used braid fishing line and a fishhook to sew up a dog once or twice and routinely use contact cement on myself for small holes. Wouldn't recommend either as a long term or major repair solution.

I've sewn myself up with nylon filament sewing thread and a small curved needle. I've also used super glue for cuts that are a little more than minor.
