Google ads are determined by how frequently certain words show up on a page or site, so endless threads about p**n or g*ns will attract ads for p**n and g*ns. That is also why constant references to Repubs (full word, mainly) or to one of the RW mouthpieces like Rush or Coulter will call up ads for RW books, polls, and petitions, or for opportunities to contribute to the Repubs or to a specific Repub candidate.

(Haven't those of you who see the ads ever noticed that DU's pages often have RW ads?)

The site owner doesn't choose the ads. That is done by some arcane algorithm.

Example: One page on my Grammar and Usage for the Non-Expert site, an article in which I humorously referred to "grammar nazis" used to attract ads for WW2 books and WW2 and Nazi memorabilia!

Porn doesn't come up on the ads when I row over to island.

I wouldn't know.  Ads don't show up on mine at all.  I use an ad blocker.

My wife used my browser to search for and visit sites selling rugs. For months afterward I had advertisements for rugs showing up when I visited websites using adware. Now since the word rug is not common on most of the posts I read then I think it is safe to say that if the DUers are getting a lot of porn ads then they are visiting or searching for porn sites.
