I am reminded of something a gay friend had told me back when Bill Clinton was elected President. He had been heavily campaigning for Clinton on behalf of gay rights groups. The day after Clinton's win, I said to him that he must be quite happy that Clinton won. His response was, "Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that we got him elected. But now that he in, he becomes the enemy. We need to hold his feet to the fire to be sure that he keeps his promises."
I always respected that very practical and realistic view my friend held. Turns out, he was absolutely right in feeling that way. With very few exceptions, politicians are all bullshitting panderers, and none are above critique.
