Half Of Interstate 80 Bridge Closed For Safety
 Source: KWQC

Tuesday night, bridge inspectors noticed a crack in a floor beam on the Interstate 80 Bridge over the Mississippi River in LeClaire. Part of the bridge is already torn up, and as a result, both eastbound lanes into Illinois are closed. That means interstate traffic is being detoured.

Eastbound travelers are being diverted to I-280 or I-74 into Illinois and then to Interstate 80, southeast of the Quad Cities. The travel headache is being created in the name of safety.

Since the 2007 Minnesota bridge collapse, engineers in every state inspect bridges annually. On Tuesday, inspectors with the Illinois Department of Transportation didn't like what they saw on the I-80 Bridge.

The eastbound lanes of the I-80 Bridge were closed immediately, giving crews full access to the bridge.

What a mess. Plus there was already construction going on with I-74. If you're just passing through your best bet is to take I-280.

There will be no bridge problems under socialism......no cars, no need for bridges.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

I wonder what party the governors of Illinois and Iowa belong to, and which parties run each state's legislature?  Hint...it starts with a D in both cases.

Uh, isn't this a blue state?

And don't states take money given by the federal government and the states themselves decide how to use it (i.e., the scope of the road project, who gets the contracts, whatnot)?

Since this is a blue state, and since highway construction contracts are fertile fields for payoffs to corrupt politicians, one wonders how much of the budget was appropriated for that, meaning there was less money left over for the project itself, resulting in shoddier construction.

Corruption kills.  We saw that in the Minnesota bridge collapse, and that stupid tunnel in Boston.

You would think that the Illinois DOT would be awash in money since they doubled the tolls for non I-Pass users.

For four years I lived less than a mile from that bridge in 'suburban' Le Claire (A small joke, it's a little place but the real town is north of the bridge and I lived to the south of it).  It's not a truss bridge, think of it more like a giant version of a highway overpass (Somewhat unnerving to drive over in a lightweight vehicle during high winds, honestly).  It has been there for quite some time, I lived there in the late 80s and I believe the bridge may have been built in the 70s.  A need for a major repair at this point in its history should hardly come as a big surprise to anyone, or be laid at any particular Administration's feet.

I thought after January 20th, 2009, all bridges and roads would magically fix themselves.  I looked out my window on January 21st, 2009 and my street looked exactly the same.

The truth is that liberalism is a physical danger to the citizens of this country with all of their stupid policies and mandates.

Yeah, but most of the DOT funds go to Mayor Daley to keep the Chicago Machine well oiled.

Did you know Buffalo Bill?  :-)

I worked right down the road from the bridge at ALCOA for a few years.

LeClaire is a neat little town, a friend of mine now owns Sneaky Pete's in LeClaire, as he bought it from his parents.

Heheh, no, but one of my co-workers at the Arsenal was a retired SF Colonel who was mayor of Camanche, in his off time.  He used to play Rush's show every day in his cube just to drive the hard-Left fat Lesbian in the office insane.
