Diary from Bible College
« on: September 21, 2012, 12:05:50 PM »
Well I started school a couple weeks ago and already I've learned a lot. I have a class on the four gospels, Torah, soul winning, English, History of Civilizations, Personal Finances. On Thursdays we have Chapel and Practicum. Practicum is practical teaching, hands on type stuff, baptizing, doing a funeral, hospital visits, things like that.

Today was my second day of real Practicum, and it was baptizing. Luckily I brought a change of clothes because I help clean at the college so I didn't have to do it in my suit. The water was colder than a lib's heart. The hardest part of it was getting into the water past your knees. It was a great big barrel of fun watching some of the guys react to the cold water. The best was when one other student had to baptize someone who was 6'5, the baptizer stood at maybe 5'3.

As for me I failed the first two times. First time I didn't submerge the person I was working with. Second time I forgot to say the blessing. Third time was the charm. I think it was the cold water that made me seize.

So I've learned the blessing as well. "Everyone this is John Doe, John do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?" He'll say yes. "By your profession of faith I baptize you, my brother, in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost. Buried in the likeness of his death." you submerge them for a quick second. "Raised in the newness of his resurrection."

My bible college is very small about 15 of us altogether. 11 live on campus, but some of them don't get to eat dinner every night. So Friday nights my mom brings dinner for the ones that live there. They love it, they're very grateful for it, and they're excited for it. Today they had some Spanish food and it was a lot of fun.

I then told her that she is like Jesus. She takes care of 12 people, feeds the multitude, and serves with a good spirit.

If you had any doubt I was Sgt Snuggle's son this will clear it up now.

Today we were talking about kids and how some wanted to either adopt or how they would raise them. Well I said I would want to marry a woman who was older and had a son my age. That way I could have someone to play video games with. Everyone was like "Why would you do that? why not just make friends with the guy?". Well immediately I asked a guy who was sitting with us "Hey, is your mom single?" and we all had a good laugh.

Well today in my class on the Torah we learned about Lot and Sodom. How his heart was there before he was. How he took in the worldly pleasures before spiritual needs. Because of it he lost everything. His wife loved it to the point that as they were leaving she looked back one last time and died. His daughters tricked him and got him drunk and had an incest relationship with him. Some pretty gruesome stuff.

You know...

...I was going to PM you and suggest you post some of the topics from your studies in this forum.

And here you are.

Do they teach pyschic mind-reading at the Baptist college of yours?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

No I used the force.

Tonight I went soulwinning. That's when we go door to door knocking to invite people to come to church. We may even lead someone to Christ then and there at the door. Tonight was a good night. There was a rainbow in the sky and it hadn't even rained, already a good sign. Met a man who was a Christian but hadn't been going maybe he could've been looking for one? I don't know.

Another man had just moved from Panama and was living with some friends. They knew all about our church and loved it, they sent their daughter to our church's school back in the early 70s when the school started. They encouraged their friend to go to our church. Hope to see him this Sunday.

Today I had the feeling I needed to know some sort of Spanish to invite some people. So I asked my Mom to write out a quick note saying "I want to invite you to my church on Sunday at 11." I used it today and the lady seemed to smile at that. There were good prospects tonight.

Last but not least we met a man who had a major heart surgery a few years ago. He said he invited Jesus into his heart before it. We went over some scripture with him just to reaffirm his faith and to make sure he understood his beliefs. We hope to see them all this Sunday.

Okay, question.

You want to be a military chaplain.

If I've read history correctly, military chaplains are free to give absolution to the dying even if of a different denomination.

Such as a Baptist preacher on the battlefield taking care of a dying Catholic guy can give him the Catholic absolution and it's validly Catholic, or a Jewish rabbi on the battlefield in a similar situation, can do that for a Presbyterian, and so on.

Is that still true?  I hope so.

Interesting question.

If memory serves Protestants receive absolution through baptism so a death bed absolution not necessary but may be requested and granted as his preaching and praying may help the individual believer develop a greater sense of having received God's forgiveness.

Protestants do receive general absolution through confession of sins.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Just got home from school. Today I had soulwinning and English classes. We had Chapel and Practicum as well. In Practicum we talked about music and why most independent Baptist churches dislike contemporary music from the pulpit. The origin, they believe that Christian rock still has roots to secular rock music in the way that people may play. The content of the song may be good, but the music in general they disagree with. They believe that what some might play at home isn't necessarily right at church. To some extent I agree with all this.

I believe all Christian music is ok, as long as it still adheres to the word and the members are sincere about it. As far as playing like Christian heavy metal at 11 am and having a rock concert I kinda disagree with, but Friday night teen meeting? Why not? Most people will find ways to bend the rules so they're not breaking them. There are some independent baptist churches that agree with this sort of philosophy, and mine isn't one of those but that's ok with me.

Also as a note if you have a kid that listens to a lot of secular heavy metal and want to nudge them to the right track, just ask me. I love Christian heavy metal, and I can recommend some bands.

Yesterday these girls asked me to bring in my Kazoo so that we could have a trio in class.  So today I did bring it and it sounded amazing, but that's not the best part. Later we had an hour break and when we were in the courtyard I would walk next to people and play them a theme song. I did "Eye of the Tiger" to some people, and "Rocky" to others. To my friend who is Mexican I played the "Mexican Hat Dance" for him.

Today I turned in my first paper for a class. It was about what the Bible says about work and I got a 96 out of 100, made some silly mistakes.

Quote
"And the Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and keep it." Genesis 2:15. It is important to remember that God designed and created man to work. We live in a society of lazy people who wish to use the government to pay for their living. Young able bodied men and women who refuse to understand this. They let this mentality control them and when their safety net is taken away they blame others and not themselves.

"He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich." Proverbs 10:4. It's a shame that we live in a world where hard work and success is frowned upon. The capitalist companies that started as nothing and grew to what they are are deemed evil and greedy. People scoff at the success of others in jealousy, but the companies all started out as nothing. Ideas that man had created and flourished into corporations that have raised millions all because someone worked diligently. "In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury." Proverbs 14:23

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." 1 Timothy 5:8. We work to provide for ourselves, to provide for our families. To impede on the important things for our survival is to fail God. "For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shalt be well with thee." Psalm 128:2. Work and enjoy the fruits of your labour, for God had commanded us.

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men;" Colossians 3:23. Work with a good spirit, work even if its a job you dislike. God rewards men and women who work with a good spirit, and especially those who work for the Lord. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lord would look down at Cain and given him a second chance if he had a good spirit when he gave his offering. Our God is a sovereign God, a parent that listens to his children even when they make mistakes. "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established." Proverbs 16:3.

So we must remember as not only as Christians, but human beings that the fruits of our labour lies within ourselves. We cannot depend on others to provide for us, we depend on our own hands. We must remember to work for the Lord, and work with joy in our hearts. That is why God taught us to fish so that we may eat for a lifetime.

I don't see anything wrong with that essay, Carrots.

Work makes one a better person.

Work does not redeem one sin's for the next world--only the Grace of God through Christ does that--but it helps make one a better person in this temporal world.

Despite the obstacles the ADA (Americans With Diabilities Act) has put in the way of people it was meant to "help," I persist in working.  I cannot imagine life without working.  Of course, I got no spouse or dependents to consider, and so to me, work is perhaps a more important thing in my life, than in the lives of others.

I'll probably work until the day I drop dead, even if it means I'm unloading trucks at the age of 80.

Work expands one's world, expands one's mind.

The mistakes in the essay were spelling and maybe some grammar issues, but my teacher told me the content was good. As part of my scholarship I have to help clean the church. I clean the bathrooms and I don't like it, they're gross sometimes but I have to. One thing I've learned is to do it with a good spirit and just to get it done.

Also today in World Civilizations and History we all failed one of the bonus questions because we put the capital of Israel as Jerusalem. We were all thinking Biblical and not worldly. It didn't hit me until after I put Jerusalem and turned it in. So after he made it that the first person to get it would win the extra point and I got it.

Tonight for dinner my Mom brought chili and everyone enjoyed it. She also made flan and we had an extra one so I'm really happy about that.

Today in Pentateuch we learned about the birth of the Arab nations.

Abraham had an affair with Hagar the Egyptian servant to Sarah. Because Abraham is the father of nations God promised to make his first born Ishmael into a great (great as in big) nation. Genesis 16:12 "And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren." That is the Arab nations right there. Genesis 21:12,13 "And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed."

Ishmael was a fleshly birth, born out of disobedience from God. Isaac was born in the spirit of God, and only able to be born because God gave Abraham and Sarah the ability to.

Technically, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.  It was name the capital by the Israel government in the 50's.  Most other countries do not recognize the Israeli right to proclaim their own capital.

I wonder how we would feel if every other country in the world called New York City the US capital.

Today was a silly day I had a spelling and vocab test. On my vocab I decided to make a short story for 4 of the words.

"When the man farted, the smell permeated through the room. He denied it and then was deemed as a prevaricator. He was then ostracized. I believe he was nefarious."

Everyone just sorta facepalmed in class.

After we had pictures and I wanted to stand like Napoleon, but I wasn't allowed. So then all of us stood infront of a mirror and took a facebook picture. We were all leaning slightly and doing duck lips.

Last night my Mom and Step Dad went soul winning and talked to my pastor. They told him things you shouldn't tell a pastor like "My son is writing a song about the Hittites to the tune of the Brady Bunch theme for his report."

God answers prayer.

Its been storming all day today here in sunny Florida. This morning it was storming and I got soaked. If it did stop it was only for 5 minutes or so. Well before my last class I lead us all in prayer and asked for better weather than what I suffered through this morning. During my volunteer work hour it was just storming, the wind was howling it was dark outside at 1pm. At 2pm it stopped just as I finished my hour. As soon as I got home at 2:30 it started again.

What a amazing profession you have chosen.   I am interested with how as a Chaplin you can be able to minister to all faiths ???

How this works is outside of the Civilian knowledge, will you be a Pastor at large ????  Say a Muslim is dieing, can you be allowed to do what an absent Muslim Chaplain would do for them ??????

When my 3 week old was dieing in a Military Hospital I requested a Chaplain, I cared not what faith, at that point I would have welcomed a voodoo man wearing feathers in their hair.     We were sent a Mormon Chaplin and that was good enough for me.

What did I care except that this baby had to baptised right now, shock and in a daze, all I cared about was a man or woman of GOD were there with her.

Funny how life works, this baby recovered against all the odds, her son is now a Marine.

Your future is to serve all and your choice in a profession will make the lives of thousands of others ease their pain.  So you become a Chaplin and find you have to serve others that are anti Christion or even the Satanist's, may not be easy to help those you hate or abhor.   This did not stop Jesus however he gave his love to all.

Good going Young man, you cannot change the world but you will save the lives of more people then any one doctor ever can.

God Bless you, please keep us up to date on your classes and your journey into a world most of us have no idea of.

Well Wednesday night I went soul winning and met a man who was Catholic. He didn't know if he would go to Heaven. We ministered to him at his front door and taught him that salvation is through believing Christ. He eventually accepted and professed his faith to Christ last night. I believe that this would be my method in the future, except if they're Jehovah Witnesses or anything like Buddhist.

Probably give very generalized sermons but still keep true to the word.

How to give comfort to a dieing Buddhist, all I know about that faith is from what my coworkers taught me.  They have this thing with string they wear around their wrist when they  ask a "MONK?"  to intercede on a wish.  Then one man who had just buried his father had every hair on his body removed, including eyelashes.  He said it took many hours for the rite to be finished.

I would not worry about the Jehovah Witnesses, few go into the Military except in a medical field occasionally.

Good grief what an education you are going to get, wonder how the Scientologists handle their suffering, ill or dieing.

One thing you can be sure of, a Chaplin gets more respect then even the President or any 4 star General.    You my dear will never have to stand in line unless you want to in a Chow Hall.   Wonderful choice you have made, won't be easy in any way, but you are the glue that will hold together society together come hell or high water.

I love your soul winning description, sort of like soul collecting for God.    Keep us updated when you can, you know I allways wondered about Lotts wife and why she looked back---------Far as her daughters getting their father drunk,  well that's another discussion.

Besides I think my messages would be out of the Old Testament. Being in a war I think there's a lot to learn from like Joshua, Gideon, Moses, or even Job. Stories about God's hand and trusting him in the midst of trying times.

Don't get me wrong I like the New Testament, but I like history and as long as it keeps to the word during ministry its ok.
